PHILOSOPHICAL APPLICATION PAPER

Directions: The basic idea here: life meets Asian Philosophy! Specifically, take a set of arguments from the course, and then take an aspect of your life or some episodes in it, and bring them into critical dialogue with each other. So roughly half of the essay should have an autobiographical character and the other half should have substantial philosophical discussion of the relevant personal material. These two aspects of the paper can be presented in any order, including being interwoven seamlessly. Overall, this project simply formalizes what we often do in class discussion.

Here are some general logistical questions to ask yourself: Do elements in your autobiography challenge arguments made by authors we’ve discussed or take their arguments in new directions? Or going the other direction, do some of the arguments of our course readings challenge your autobiographical interpretation? All of the above? Neither? Whatever the case may be, your focus should be on logical argument, not just personal significance. So there should be a thesis, forecast, argument, and a conclusion in your essay. Also, whatever topic you choose to do, you should include concrete discussion of readings from class that are the most philosophically relevant to your thesis.

Word of warning: be careful not to quote too much. I want to see your thoughts more than anyone else’s. So unless it is distinctly appropriate to quote a passage (e.g. the language perfectly makes a point; your criticism is specially clarified by actually quoting the intended target of the criticism, etc.), you should just carefully paraphrase and cite the passage. If you do quote, any quotation over two lines should be block-quoted and single-spaced.

One last note: All submitted work must be a new project for you and must be your own. I take academic dishonesty seriously: an F will be given and a report will be made to the Dean’s Office. So, please, try to avoid even the appearance of dishonesty. A good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, cite (including yourself)!

Topics (Choose one of the following):

  1. Hinduism (the Gita and to an extent Gandhi) makes identification with one’s Self and certain disciplines of thought and of action central to Moksha in the earthly life (and Gandhi has a distinctly socially engaged variant of this basic idea). If you agree with this central feature of Hinduism, defend it against potential criticisms. If you disagree with it, explain your contrary argument. If you agree partly (where the part is substantially Hindu), explain and defend the hybrid account you endorse.

  1. 2. Confucianism makes the project of moral self-cultivation central to human living and offers a distinctive account of the nature of the self and of its cultivation (and there are of course differences between the early Confucians). If you agree with this central feature of Confucianism, defend it against potential criticisms. If you disagree with it, explain your contrary argument. If you agree partly (where the part is substantially Confucianist), explain and defend the hybrid account you endorse.
  2. 3. Daoism makes naturalness and conceptual play central to the transformation of self that is crucial to human living (and there are some differences here between Laozi and Zhuangzi). If you agree with this central feature of Daoism, defend it against potential criticisms. If you disagree with it, defend your contrary argument. If you agree partly (where the part is substantially Daoist), explain and defend the hybrid account you endorse.

  1. 4. In the pursuit of social justice, is the Confucian account (Confucius, Mencius, and/or Xunzi) or the Gandhian account of a person’s transformation most logically plausible? Explain and defend your answer.

Details: The paper should have a word count of at least 1500 (which is roughly 6-7 pages) and it should not exceed 2000 words. Also, it should be typed in 12 font with reasonable margins. (I will not accept electronic or fax copies.).  And it is imperative that you also submit an electronic version of the essay to turnitin.com (see below for how to do this) by the due date. If the turnitin.com website is malfunctioning, email me your paper as either a word or pdf document to verify that you could have submitted the essay on time. When the website is restored, upload your essay.

Grading Criteria:

  1. Clarity and Organization
  2. Correct spelling and grammar
  3. Introductory paragraph: (a) clear statement of thesis in one sentence – e.g. “I shall argue that there is an irresolvable conflict between the argument of the Apology and of the Crito.”; (b) forecast of paper – e.g. “This paper is divided into three parts. I first expound the central claims of the Apology and the Crito.  Second, I outline a position that attempts to reconcile the two texts.  In the final section, I argue that the positions of the two texts cannot be unified.”
  4. Structured development or unfolding of ideas.
  5. Accurate summary of author’s ideas.
  6. Minimal quoting. Quote only if the author’s words are especially appropriate, and

keep even this to a minimum. In all other cases, paraphrase the author’s words. Also, if you absolutely have to quote more than a few sentences, use single-space block quotation method. Finally, whether you quote or paraphrase, cite the author and work!

  1. Concise summaries of relevant positions of issues. This ensures that most of the paper

is devoted to critical analysis.

  1. Quality of critical thinking
  • Is there an argument for the thesis? Is it logically persuasive or cogent?
  • Are important distinctions collapsed? Are important distinctions formed?
  • Is the opposing view constructed as a “straw man”, or is it presented sympathetically?
  • Does the critical discussion reveal a grasp of the underlying vision that frames the discussion? Is there a grasp of the anxiety or push-and-pull of the various positions discussed?
  • If you are going for gold: Is an objection to the thesis considered? Is that objection persuasively defeated?
  1. For every assignment, an understanding of and adherence to USF standards of academic honesty is required. Study the Academic Honesty Policy at: http://www.usfca.edu/catalog/policies/honor/. Ignorance of the exact content of this Policy is unacceptable. Among the many elements of academic honesty, note, for example, that all submitted work must be a new project for you and must be your own work. Small parts of your work can borrow from other works so long as they are properly cited (in footnotes, endnotes, or in-text citations with an accompanying bibliography). Here, a good rule of thumb is: when in doubt, cite (including yourself)! Academic dishonesty will be handled easily: an F grade and notification will be given to the Dean’s office. And, again, ignorance is no excuse.

Research Critique, Part 2

Prepare a critical analysis of a quantitative study focusing on protection of human participants, data collection, data analysis, problem statement, and interpretation of findings.

Each study analysis will be 750-1,000 words and submitted in one document.

Refer to the resource Research Critique, Part 2. Questions under each heading should be addressed as a narrative, in the structure of a formal paper.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a grading rubric. Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment.

Submit the assignment along with an electronic version of the article used for the analysis. If an electronic version is not available, submit a clean unmarked copy of the article.

UNIX Shells

Differences Between UNIX Shells and When to Use Them

Discuss the different roles of the UNIX shells, how they might be utilized, and why you have that many choices. This short paper will concentrate on how the UNIX operating systems all have different shells and why those different shells are necessary.

Design Finance

The presentation has the theory and examples of financial costing and financial planning, what I need you to do is to make real financial planning for them. So I need you to do genuine financial costing for the 15 capsule collection items in the presentation. I need to be able to justify the numbers to the teacher as it is primarily financial assessment. So all the numbers must be genuine and not just made up numbers. Need real costing for each of 15 items including, you need to research real price of garments, real variable costs, real price of labour that goes into it (which would be at least 20-25 per hour per artisan), etc.

The numbers should be justified which is why I provided extra slides for you to be able to do that. I also need genuine cash flow, balance sheet, and profit and loss for next 6 months – a year.

So this is important stuff once you do the real financial analysis on this topic, then I would need justification for the numbers.

The contents that you need to do are listed below:

Costing of the capsule collection
a. Include costing sheets per item
b. Analyse fixed and variable costs (divided by quantity of production)
c. Financial plan: Calculate
i. cost of each item separately,
ii. wholesale price per item
iii. retail price per item
iv. budget for the collection,
v. break even and possible profit forecast

So once again, I need you to look at the presentation, substitute the financial costing and planning slides (slide 14 and up) and instead of these slides I need you to do genuine research and put real justified financial numbers in them. It is a finance planning assessment. After you will do the genuine financial planning which might take 6-8 slides, I want you to fill the rest of 12 slides that I bought with justification as to where from did you get the numbers, based on what, justify. And then a page about a bibliography you might have used.

Computer Society and the Law

This assignment is worth 50% of the assessment for this module.

Overall word count: approximately 3000 words.

Learning Outcomes assessed

  1. Research, synthesize and present information relating to social and legal issues arising from IT use
  2. Apply relevant laws to the analysis of complex IT-related problem situations
  3. Explain and evaluate the role of an expert witness

Background

You are a Director of a newly merged recruitment company, MN, which matches employers and employees. This company has been formed from a merger of 2 companies: AB a small recruitment company with 3 employees and YZ, a recruitment company with 8 employees. MN will be setting up in new premises with new, merged IT systems. Before the merger, AB and YZ each had their own website and applicant database. YZ also had a business contact database and ran an online CV checking service. AB’s website was built by a summer placement student from the local university. The student was a family friend of the owner, and had therefore never entered into a formal contract with the company. She had also developed some very nice logos for the company’s website. YZ had a technically-able employee who managed the IT systems, and oversaw the development of new IT systems – such as the CV checking service, that was outsourced to a local software house.

AB had developed a long-term relationship with a local University, working closely with a member of staff to support placement students. The new merged company, MN, wants to continue this relationship, and is hoping to use some summer placement students to help them to clean up and transfer data into the new database. You also like the digital logos that were developed for the AB website and would like to adapt them.

Consider the following hypothetical situations. You appreciate the importance of seeking professional legal advice, but you like to form your own opinion first to help you understand and review the advice you receive from your solicitor.

Situations

  1. The new software systems

Because the new business is taking over from existing businesses, the move needs to be seamless. You’re planning to continue running existing software systems and to gradually develop new ones, starting with the web site.

A member of staff from the local university has said he will help with the re-design of the website and the moving of AB’s data into YZ’s applicant database. This could be done in his own time or as a consultant employed through a contract with the University. You have also considered using software house and you are studying their standard contract. As money is tight, you are considering saving money by not having a feasibility study because you’re not building any new systems, you’re just merging and tidying up what exists already.

  1. Discuss the legal issues that are relevant to the quality of the new website and database, and to protecting your company from problems arising from the merging of the two IT systems. You should take a broad view of quality, which would include, for example reasonable time and cost as well as issues such as security and data integrity. Consider whether the choice of supplier and contract conditions affects the legal position. You will need to explain the key issues and relate them to this situation.

25 Marks

Assessment Criteria

A summary of relevant statute and case law

    • Identification of important issues and law that is relevant to the relationship with the developer/their employer and work you want them to do.

  • Justification of the points made

10 marks

  1. Plan the negotiation that you, as director, will have with the lecturer before you agree that they can do the work. In your plan, identify issues (e.g. price) to discuss and outline how you will approach the negotiation. Your outline may include your preparation, discussion of your initial position and what you will consider when deciding how flexible to be during the negotiation. Justify your approach, and where possible give examples and discuss alternatives

Fire Investigation

I need to have a written text covering the questions below. I will include the presentation instructions. I would like it by email. I am very worried about plagurism.
Here are the presentation instructions;-
The work must be:
• Word-processed
• Single sided
• 1.5 or double line spaced
• Ariel 12 point font
• Justified
• Page numbered
• On A4 paper
• Margins left and right 3cm
The questions are:-
Part C. (LO 3) Effect of fire on people

The mean thermal inertia of skin has been estimated as 1.7 kW s1/2 m-2 K-1.
Formula (3) estimates the surface temperature of skin exposed to a constant heat flux:

(3)

Reference:

How would the “thermal penetration depth” of skin vary with time for someone in a developing room-fire environment?

If the heat flux to the skin was a steady 100 J m-2 s-1 when would a person with normal pain threshold and skin texture experience pain and a burn:

Data from NIST: http://www.nist.gov/fire/fire_behavior.cfm

º C Response
37 Normal human oral/body temperature
44 Human skin begins to feel pain
48 Human skin receives a first degree burn injury
55 Human skin receives a second degree burn injury
62 A phase where burned human tissue becomes numb
72 Human skin is instantly destroyed

Part D. (LO 3) Impact of explosions on people

Critically review what barotrauma is and how it might be related to Boyles Law. (15 marks)

Explain how ‘scaled range’ is computed and used in assessing the effects of an explosive on people (primary blast effects, in particular), property & environment. (10 marks)
