The Great War was fought from 1914 to 1918. When the United States entered the war in 1917, they were not militarily prepared to do so. The U.S. Army consisted of 300,000 soldiers, including all of the National Guard units. The Army’s arsenal of war supplies was non-existent. Furthermore, as had been shown in the dispute with Mexico the previous year, the Army had severe deficiencies in its military structure, particularly in training, organization, and supplies.

Discuss why the U.S. went to war. What was the Allies’ initial impression of the U.S.?

Topic:
In her essay “Impossible Subjects,” Mae Ngai claims that “race and illegal status remain closely related” in our country. Using readings and videos from class, explain how the two are closely related with reference to Latino/Hispanic immigrants and/or Asian immigrants.

Essay Requirements:

Part 1:

1. Provide a brief overview of your selected study, making sure that you cover the purpose of the study, the methodology used, the participants, the way the data was collected and analyzed, and the outcomes.

2. If you were the researcher conducting this study and found that you were not familiar with the particular research population, what steps would you take to prepare yourself to conduct the research with this population?

You are the head of the human resources department in a small manufacturing organization with 200 employees. Your top management has asked you to find a way to keep your organization’s wage/salary and benefits administration efforts in-house instead of outsourcing them. You have decided to focus your first efforts on the administration of wages and salaries.

For this assignment you will be reviewing what software is available today for employers who want to keep their wage/salary programs in-house.

Narrow your focus to two different software programs available today before you begin your paper. Compare and contrast the two. Consider the system needs/costs since you are sure that your organization will need to purchase new hardware too. Also consider the number of employees needed to successfully implement and utilize the software to meet your organization’s direct pay administration needs.

Select one software vendor over the other and defend your selection. Support your choice with information from your readings/research.
Relying upon your reading and researched information, is this the best course for this organization to take? Why or why not?
Bring in at least 2 library sources to help strengthen and validate your discussion.
Submit your paper by the Module due date. Paper length: 2-3 pages, not counting the cover and reference pages.

SLP Assignment Expectations

Your paper should demonstrate critical thinking and analysis of the relevant issues and HRM actions, drawing upon all of the required background readings and relevant sources from your prior courses and your own TUI library search. Use website information sparingly (reputable websites only).
Prepare a paper that is professionally presented (including a cover page, a “List of References,” and a strong introduction and conclusion).

Proofread your paper carefully for grammar, spelling and word-usage errors.
Address all aspects of the assignment as stated.
Provide at least one private-sector employer example of wage/salary software application as you address the above assignment requirements. Provide the name of the employer. Use a different employer example in your case paper than in your SLP paper.

Limit your web search and focus instead on your library search. Bring in information from the background readings as well to help add depth and validity to your discussion.

Give authors credit for their work. Cite sources of borrowed information in the body of your paper as footnotes, numbered end notes or APA style of referencing.

Portfolio Task 2 – Quantitative Analysis

Your task is to conduct 2 statistical analyses for your specific data set provided (see CLIC learn for data). For each statistical analysis, you need to provide descriptive statistics and graphical representation of the data, a paragraph justifying the statistical tests used and a second paragraph explaining your findings. The analyses align with the research questions introduced at the start of the module (outlined below)

1. ‘Do subjects of differing anxiety levels perform at equal levels in front of an audience?’
2. ‘Is there an association between natural anxiety levels and physiological and mechanical factors during putting performance?’

When submitting your work, you should include the SPSS output in and appendix, but not in the main body of the task. This is important so that we can assess your use of the statistical software.

The word limit for this task is 1000 word (+/- 10%).

 

The task should be submitted to the CLIC Learn site only. Your task should be submitted in the ‘formative submissions’ folder, in the Portfolio task tab. Select the ‘Portfolio task 2: Quantitative Analysis’ folder and you will find a turnitin submission point. Submit your work to this as usual and you should receive an originality feedback form. Make sure the file you up load has your name in the title.

Final Hand in Date: 13.02.2014

The final draft of your task should be submitted in 2 ways. Firstly a hard copy must be submitted to the drop box in Fleming hallway by 4pm on the due date. Secondly an electronic copy must be submitted through blackboard and turnitin in the ‘Final Submission’ folder under the portfolio task tab.

Natural Disaster and the Retail Business Owner

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the news has been full of examples like this one from Hurricane Katrina:

During Hurricane Katrina, there were several cases of retail businesses increasing their prices.  Gasoline prices went up, food prices increased as food became scarcer, and the prices of generators also became virtually unaffordable for many.  As it became more evident that Hurricane Katrina was going to impact the New Orleans area, many people decided to evacuate the area and move north to Arkansas, Northern Mississippi, and Tennessee to wait out the storm.  As vacant motel rooms became fewer and fewer, Brian Johnson, who owned a motel on Interstate 55 near McComb, Mississippi called up his day manager, Lilly and said “We know there are going to be a lot of people coming up to stay out of the direct path of the Hurricane. I want you to change our rate from $55 to $200 a night.” Lilly was aghast.  She responded “We can’t do that Mr. Johnson, these people need help.”  “Lilly, this is our opportunity to make some money from a bad situation.  I really need you to do this.” Lilly was silent for a few moments then responded “Mr. Johnson, if you insist on increasing these rates, I will quit.”  Taken by surprise, Brian stated “Well Lilly, I guess you have to do what you have to do but I’m going to raise these rates.”  Lilly angrily told Brian she quit and hung up the phone.  Brian did increase his prices for the motel over the next week, but only to $125 vice the $200 he initially wanted to.  Approximately 3 months after Hurricane Katrina decimated the New Orleans area, Lilly reapplied for her job at the motel Brian owned.  Brian was still resentful about what Lilly had done, but he had also tried to see it from her point-of-view. He was not sure what to do. Brian asks you what you think.

Should Brian give Lilly her job back?

Case Expectations:

Read the background material for this module. Apply that material to the decision making that Lilly made and the decision making that Brian made. Which approach are you applying in deciding what to recommend to Brian?

Write a 2-3 page paper, not including cover page and reference page, explaining your analysis and advice to Brian. Be sure to demonstrate that you understand the normative ethics issues and the utilitarian and deontological approaches.

General Expectations:

Your paper should be double-spaced with 12-point font.

Your paper should have a separate cover page and a separate reference page containing the full citations corresponding to the in-text citations you choose to use in the body of your paper. So in addition to the 2-3 page body of your paper you will have a title page and a reference page.  So overall, you will be submitting a 4 to 5 page document.

Be sure to cite references and proofread your paper.

The first characteristic of an argument is that it should have a claim. Secondly, the claim should have support. The third characteristic of an argument is that it is an attempt to influence someone in a context where people disagree with one another
