Explore the elements of the modernist era that are evident in a portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

James Joyce was one of the modernist writers who embraced the opportunities brought about by the modernist era. Joyce was one of the most notable authors of the modernism era. He was part of the group of writers who set the pace and laid grounds which writers of the next generation followed. He incorporated the resources of language at his disposal into his work. He made an enormous contribution to the era by influencing the technique of the writers who cropped up in the 21st century. His novel A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is a work of the modernist era. Harry Levin said in regard to A portrait of the Artist as a Young Man main character : “ He becomes his own hero, and begins to crowed his other characters into the background.” In what follows I will explore the elements of the modernist era that are evident in the novel.
Modernism Techniques Evident in the Novel
The novel is a literary work that has multiple elements of the modernist era. The dialogue is minimal and it is a third-person narrative. The style used in the novel changes and evolves all through the five chapters. It describes the life of Stephen from his childhood. The beginning of the book relays his conscious experience and thoughts when he was young. With time as he grows older, language has been skillfully used to describe in an indirect way his state of mind. Joyce intended to highlight the subjective experience by using language instead of presenting the protagonists’ actual experiences by prose narrative.
The novel has several characteristics of the modernism era. There are numerous important and clear modernistic techniques incorporated in the novel. The techniques connect the character who is Stephen to Joyce, the author. These are some of the most common characteristics of modernism.
The novel is semi-autobiographical. The development of the character is reflected through his thoughts and experiences. There is a close and clear identification between Stephen and Joyce. Mixing the third and second person creates a personal reality. Joyce felt that modern fiction had to evolve from the previous conventions. This move he believed would express modern life more accurately.
The last section of the novel represents the diary of Stephen before leaving for Paris. The book leaves readers with the task of concluding the events that will eventually unfold. The diary announces the experiences of the character. It also announces the process of Stephens’ consciousness. It represents his thoughts and relays them to the reader.

Stream of Consciousness
The technique was popular in the modernist era. Joyce represents the consciousness of Stephen by relaying his thoughts. He focused on the individual rather than the society. This is attributed to be the reason behind why he uses the stream of consciousness and interior monologue. Joyce was known to favor this style. The style adopted by Joyce was free-flowing and uninhibited. This is reflected in the unrestrained conscious thought of Stephen.
This is an important technique of modernism. It manages to create a psychic reality that is not connected with true reality. The stream of consciousness technique renders the inner life of a character through a continuous flow of feelings, thoughts, fantasies and impressions. Modernist writers did not chronologically render the consciousness of a character; instead the style was more like an interior monologue.

The Contingent Object of Contemporary Art

Write two response questions (please title each questions by question #1 and question #2 ). A response question is an open-ended question (or questions) based on Chapter 2. Response questions should provide some context and/or background from the reading. Each discussion question, including context/background information, should be a minimum of 100 words. The discussion question is a formal writing assignment, where you need to cite specific pages in MLA format.
Please consider the following:
-Can your question help us understand the important idea(s) within the reading-Can you further discuss an idea that impacted you, whether positively or

-Can you explore different positions or perspectives on controversial issues?
-Can you challenge the author or their ideas on history, theory, process, materials, concepts, or perception?
-Are there concepts, theories, or histories you can compare?
-Can you develop an idea further? Can you further critique an idea?
-Is there a crux, dilemma, problem, paradox, and/or a contradiction in the reading?
-Do not ask definition-based questions or other easily researched questions (i.e. “What is postmodernism?”).
-The class should not be able to answer the Discussion Questions with a yes or no.
-Example (142 words):
In her article From Concept to Object: The Artistic Practice of Drawing, Lynn Gumpert briefly discusses the major role of drawing within Conceptual Art during the 1960s and 70s (51). Sol LeWitt’s wall drawings are provided as an example where the drawings are created by installers based on instructions by the artist. Gumpert quotes Rebecca Lee’s statement on LeWitt’s intentions, “LeWitt challenges one of society’s most deeply held beliefs about drawing – that it must be a personalized, unique expression of the artist’s own hand”(52). What becomes the relationship of the drawing to the original work, which are the instructions? Is the drawing part of the artwork? Does the drawing need to be present with the instructions? Do the instructions need to present with the drawing? Can one exist without the other? How does this type of art production relate to Jeff Koon’s practice?

Please don’t ask question you can find answer in the chapter. You should think critically and professionally.
Use citation from the text.

Prepare a report for a new community policing unit in the police department.

You are an American Intercontinental University online campus graduate from just over 7 years ago, and since your graduation, you have been rising up through the ranks at the local police department. You were a police officer when you attended AIU, but you had not advanced too quickly within the police department. Your upward career progression was launched with your graduation from AIU, and you have now reached the rank of Captain, where many people think that one day you will be the chief of police.
As for now, you are trying your best to do everything right as a captain. The chief calls you into a meeting with the six other captains in the police department and explains to you that he is starting a new community policing unit in the police department. He explains that he will be selecting one of his six captains to be in charge of this new division, and it will be a promotion and a raise of $20,000 per year if selected. The police chief will select the new captain over the community unit based on a report they each submit to the chief. The report must answer all of the following questions:

•What is the purpose of your community policing unit? Outline the goals of this new unit.
•What will be the specific responsibilities of your unit? Explain.
•What type of officers would you want working in your unit? Explain. Specifically, for which qualifications and experience would you be looking?
•Where would you assign your officers to work? Why? Outline the areas that you would concentrate on to begin with, and explain why.
•How would you gauge the success of your unit? Explain. What are the metrics and time line that you would use to measure success?
Your assignment is to prepare this report for the police chief. Make sure to answer all questions asked, and provide sufficient support for each of your responses.

A bibliographic entry for the source according to MLA format

The annotated bibliography helps you keep track of the material you find. It will also allow your instructor to gauge your progress, assess if your sources are appropriate, and determine if you have a basic understanding of MLA documentation.

For this assignment, you will need to submit information about two (2) of your sources – but it is recommended that, for your own purposes, you keep a record for each source you encounter. At the top of your page, after your MLA heading, please post your topic and focusing question (refer to Unit 3 content notes as needed). Then proceed with the following information for each entry (2 total):

a bibliographic entry for the source according to MLA format

a brief note about how you located the source: did you find this source in person at the library, electronically, or otherwise? what terms did you use to locate the source, etc.

information about the source’s author: who is the author? how is the author credible? You may need to do additional research on the author or organization responsible for the source to find out more about him/her/them/it, their credentials, etc. [This information will prove helpful because in your research paper’s text, when introducing a source, it is good form to use a signal phrase that introduces the author to add credibility to your argument (as in, “According to John Doe, who is a professor at Harvard University, …)]

a brief summary of what the source says (main ideas)

a reflection: how do you think you will use this source? How will this source help you support your own argument? How did it shape your own opinion, if at all? What are the source’s strengths and weaknesses?

Here is a sample entry:

“Ten Facts to Know About Torture.” Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition. N.p., n.d. Web. 14 June 2013.

This article appears in the tassc.org website. The article can be found under the tab “about torture”. I found the article by using the search engine Google; I typed “torture facts.” After reading several articles from the search, this website seemed perfect for my research.

TASSC, Torture Abolition and Survivor Support Coalition, “was founded in 1998. It is the only organization in the United States founded by and for torture survivors. The mission of TASSC is to end the practice of torture wherever it occurs and to empower survivors, their families and communities wherever they are,” according to the “What Is TASSC”? page on their website. These are survivors who became advocates for the coalition. They work very closely to the UN and human rights groups worldwide. The coalition is “a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and operates independently of any ideology, government or economic interest”. I think the resource is credible based on their ties and the amount of information presented on their website.

The article explains ten different facts related to torture. The article shares information such as how torture is still being used in 90% of the countries, that it occurs mainly in places of detention, the legal definition of torture, types of torture used nowadays, the reason behind, who commits acts of torture, the effects, the rehabilitation available for victims, and how we can get involved to help these victims.

I will use the source to show that torture is not only used to get information from prisoners but to degrade and destroy the prisoners’ self-esteem. This website has a lot of facts, not opinions and shares many personal experiences of people who were tortured. The article’s strengths are that it is concise and the information presented is very valuable and current.
