In this modern era, the application of science is everywhere. People see science as a way of pursuing knowledge to have a better life aspect. The ideology of science branches out to the study of the way of life and has given a great impact in today’s society. Having different kinds of lifestyle lead to different perspectives on people toward science. The most concerned idea is when people have misperceptions about science. These misperceptions could bring serious consequences for all Americans discussed in Enemies of Promise by J. Michael Bishop, a professor of microbiology and Chancellor at the University of California, San Francisco. He argues that in order for faith to be restored, scientists should be able to address the benefits of science to the society clearly to avoid any misconceptions that could be received. Since science helps the world to become more modern, various kinds of experiment have been done to improve people’s way of living; for example, the use of genetic modified concept into the food chart. In the text Biotech Century: Playing Ecological Roulette with Mother’s Nature Designs, Jeremy Rifkin as the author states that he supports the idea of using biotechnology for making pharmaceuticals and applying the knowledge to preventive medicine. However, Rifkin fears that the human race will master this knowledge and thus, use it in the wrong way. Also, by mastering this concept, human will start misleading the use to pursue their interests; for instance, Monsanto, one of biotechnology industries in the United States, adapts the making of herbicide-tolerant using agricultural biotechnology. Bishop and Rifkin have different ideas on the effects of science that lead to different arguments caused by many factors.
