Critical appraisal of “Co-localization of β-catenin with Notch intracellular domain in colon cancer: a possible role of Notch1 signaling in activation of CyclinD1-mediated cell proliferation”
The increasing prevalence of colorectal cancer among Asians has been attributed to the westernization of their diet. The title of the article explicitly mentions the population, parameter and the expected outcome of the study. According to the authors, the protein β-catenin has been previously observed to localize in the sub-cellular regions followed by translocation to the nucleus.

Scientology and Tom Cruise: Media Analysis

Rather than writing a traditional research paper about a particular new religion, you are asked to write an analysis of how the news media cover(ed) a particular new religion. Here’s the catch for this first assignment: You need to write on one of the groups that is described in the “Spirit Lab” exhibit in the SDSU Library (in the first floor Donor Hall). Your paper will incorporate the theories concerning new religions—especially media coverage of new religions—that we learn about in class, as well as secondary literature you identify in your research. I have put five articles online in the “Assignments” folder, but you can use additional articles.

The paper will analyze media coverage of a specific group that has a California connection. You will describe the media coverage and present your interpretation of that coverage, in light of what scholars say about media coverage of new religions. Given the fact that you have only 4–5 pages, stay narrowly focused on the group within a specific time period.

Specific suggestions:

1. Pick one event or incident relating to a group based in California (from the Spirit Lab exhibit). Do not pick an entire group, e.g., Peoples Temple. Pick a single historical instance about which there was media coverage.

The purpose of this paper is to provide a demonstration of the basic competence as is exhibited in interdisciplinary methods. Considering that not all clinical problems are well suited for interdisciplinary work, there will be a need to justify that which I intend to discuss on the research. One of the important factors to consider is that for one to effectively address people’s health needs, it is necessary to make use of both single disciplinary research and interdisciplinary approach. In this instance, therefore, it is necessary to introduce the clinical practice that I intend to cover, provide some background on the nature and the significance of the problem, as well as, the disciplines involved in dealing with the selected issue.

The extra credit assignment is to write a 2-4-page report on a Hindu temple, Jain temple, Buddhist temple, Sikh gurdwara, Muslim mosque, or other Tibetan or South Asian-oriented Buddhist group that you that you have visited. You should plan your visit to coincide with an activity—a puja (worship), a holiday festival, worship, meditation, lecture, or yoga practice. If you go at a time other than these, the doors to the deities will likely be closed and there will not be much to see. You can get information about the schedule for puja, bhajan (congregational singing of devotional hymns), arati (another term commonly used for puja) and holiday celebrations from the temple website. Completion of this assignment can earn up to 10 pts. extra credit.
