Assume that you are a policy maker concerned with correcting the effects of gases and particulates emitted by a local power plant. Write a memo that addresses the following points:

Wage-Gap between Genders
The main argument in the article “Gender Discrimination is at the heart of the Wage-Gap” is that there are clear gender-based differences in women’s salaries compared to men’s salaries. Gender discrimination is the best explanation for the wage-gap between men and women, and not issues like job tenure, the working hours, or personal choices that the two sexes make.
Gender wag- gap is evident in the USA, and considering the full-time employees, for example, women earn 77% of what their male counterparts earn. The article shows that even after accounting for factors that explain the pay difference, such as occupation, union membership status, race and education, it is not possible to explain 41% of the wage-gap. When the researchers control all the factors that can account for the wage-gap, women earn 91% of what men earn. The implication is that gender discrimination accounts for a big percentage of the wage-gap.
Occupations where females dominate usually pay less that those that are male-dominant. In the 1970s and 1980s, women attempted to move into professions where men dominate. It was an attempt to close the wage-gap. Today, however, the movements have stalled. Although women have higher education compared to men, the wage gap still remains large.
The author explains some of the issues behind the gap. Women choose disciplines that lead to low-paying jobs. More women choose education, social work, and psychology courses. Men dominate the high paying jobs like engineering. Gender discrimination is evident in the way the two genders make their career choices. Girls and women make their choices under the influence of their close relatives. There is also the problem of gender stereotypes. Traditionally, there is a feeling that men occupy positions of financial responsibility in their families. The stereotype, therefore, segregates women from good salaries.
The government can close the wage-gap using the law, for example, the paycheck fairness act. The act aims to increase transparency on wage issues. It also protects workers who raise issues of gender-based wage-gap. Women should also choose the careers that pay good salaries, and the society should end the stereotypes that increase the wage-gap.
Relationship between Extraversion and Need for Achievement
Research has found a link between personality and the elements of behavior that influence performance, such as the choice to participate and the degree of involvement in academic activities. Extraversion is one of the 5 key personality dimensions with an influence on performance. Extraversion/extroversion generally refers to an individual’s energy and tendency to interact will other people in social settings (Zafar 2011; Kaur 2013).
Particularly, extraverts/extroverts are known to be social, talkative and emotional. These social tendencies are known to have an impact on academic performance. The extravert/extrovert is largely seen as directed to the outside world. They generally like parties and fun, always looking for excitement in nearly everything they do. In this respect, they like to study in informal settings (such as lying on the couch or seat) and take frequent breaks from studies (Cheng & Ickes, 2009).
One other factor that influences achievement is risk-taking in academic activity. Risk-taking here refers to the ability to try out new things (new languages in this case) intelligently without embarrassment, interact with others (who know the language better) and participate in class. Zafar (2011) notes that risk-taking is a key factor for success in learning a second language. However, while he found a correlation between risk-taking and participation in the classroom, he also found the relationship with actual success to be relatively weak. In other words, risk-taking helped in specific tasks, but did little when it came to longer-term success.
But this is not always the case. In examining personality differences between high achievers and low achievers among a group of engineering students, Kaur (2013) focuses on the students score on extroversion and finds that those who scored higher exhibited better performance because their social habits benefited them in collaborative studies, a key factor in engineering studies.
Ultimately, there is a general view that extraverts/extroverts are poor performers. But in some cases, as Kaur’s (2013) study shows, this is not always the case. Therefore, the influence of personality depends on context, including study goals.
