For this assignment, you are going to analyze the article “Here Comes the Sun,” by Paul Krugman, which can be found on pages 509-510 of Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum (aka the blue textbook). In this assignment, you are going to follow the guidelines for writing critiques which are outlined on page 65 of Writing and Reading. Please include the following sections in your analysis.
Epigenesis
Epigenetics refers to changes occurring in the way genes express themselves which are not affected by the underlying DNA sequence and are capable of being inherited by offspring – simply put as a change in the phenotype resulting without a corresponding change in the genotype. This change is regular and occurs naturally but is quite influenced by environment or lifestyle of an individual, the age and diseases suffered by the subject.This modifications can manifest in a manner where the resultant cells are differentiated fully to end up as specific cells such as the brain cells or skin cells which could cause serious devastating conditions such as the cancer.
Goldilocks Effect of Protein Bre1 Influencing Epigenetic Regulation
In the human body, not all genes are expressed depending on the cell type even though every cell in the human has every type of the genes of that person. A simple example given for these is where the human brain cells have genes that describe the necessary function of the human heart cells but they do not function as the cells of a healthy myogenic heart thus they are not expressed.
Research has shown that small epigenetic proteins inside the cells found on top of the genetic coding control whether a cell is expressed or not. If a wrong gene was expressed then it would result in an uncontrollable growth what is sometimes referred to as cancer. At the North Carolina School of Medine University, scientists have been able to show that Bre1 a gene regulating protein needs to be maintained at proper levels so that other parties involved in gene regulation do their tasks correctly. Form the research Bre1 was noted to be very vital in formation of cancerous cells.
Professor Brian Strahl of biochemistry and biophysics in the UNC School of Medicine says they now can sequence an entire genome of a cancer cell and their findings show that many cancers have their mutations related to the epigenetic machinery. Currently it is clear that a gene won’t be expressed if there is too little Bre1 but also the genes do not shut off in case of abundance what Sahl describes as the Goldilocks effect. Too little Bre1could therefore express the genes that protect the cells from cancer hence triggering cancer development.
Family History Questionnaire
Diabetes Type two was evident from two members with experiences of slight migraines in most of the members. One member also showed some mild hearing problems which could be associated to the lifestyle he lived from childhood being a serious disc jockey and a music fanatic. Conclusions can therefore be drawn from it that the high sound environment led to phenotypic changes in his composition. Asthma was also notable in three members of the family which was also attributed to the cold and dusty environment they grew up in.
Furthermore eye problems were very expressed in my parents and their children contrary to our grandparents what can only be explained as inherited traits from my parents that could not have come from the genetic composition of their parents all of which had no eye problems. This describes a scenario where phenotypic changes have been inherited as aresult of epigenetics. Analysis from the doctors on some cases prescribed these diseases as being caused by most importantly the influence from the environments and the lifestyle they are subjected to. However the other cases like cancer and alzheimer had no claims from the family. Moreover it is important to note that these epigenic inheritances were mostly identified in first degree relatives. This supports the reason why people who have first degree relatives having cancer are very vulnerable and can easily succumb to the same. Most of the traits were shared between parents and their children as in the case of my family history.
From the findings in this questionnaire one’s health and longevity can be improved if close attention is paid to the factors that can make them vulnerable to contracting such diseases. The life style of a person should be such that they do not go to extremities. For instance the food one takes is very important in raising the chemical players that help protein Bre1 achieve its work. Too much of calorie intake that is unmonitored could be a potential risk for the victims contracting such diseases as diabetes and cancer. Moreover living in extremely hot environments should be controlled and this could be done through the use chemical assistants like the sunscreen oils. This would help reduce diseases like skin cancer besides controlling epigenesis. The environment and diet of an individual remain the major factors to take note and adjust in order to live a healthier life free from epigenesist hence a longer life.

Racial Profiling and Criminal Justice
This paper analyzes the different perspectives on the racial profiling subject in the United States criminal justice system. The perspectives are illustrated through three journal articles that are authored by three categories of different scholars. Criminal justice entails the systems that the law enforcement agencies and officers apply in managing crime in the society. The legal system experiences the challenge of ethnic profiling, in the course of crime prevention and remedies. Racial profiling stereotypes a certain segment of the American society with criminal practices. The stereotyped group is mostly the minorities; for instance, the African Americans, Arab Americans, Hispanics, or the illegal immigrants.
Racial profiling is a key issue in the United States and also globally. However, there has been minimal philosophical analysis of the subject of racial profiling. This is the reason why, there has been intense debate concerning the ethical and moral issues of racial profiling. The authors illustrate that racial profiling entails the application of race and ethnicity by the law enforcement officers in enforcing stop and search, and also arrest. The authors explain that ethnic profiling is very controversial and illegal in United States and the international community. Ethnic profiling enhances the discriminatory practices in the law enforcement. The authors illustrate that racial profiling in the United States majorly targets the minority groups, such as African Americans, South Asians, Hispanic and Latinos. The criminal events that mainly lead to racial profiling of minority communities in America include; gangs, illegal immigration and terrorism. The author concurs by illustrating the racial profiling affecting the African American population through the United States law enforcement. More so the male African Americans are stereotyped in some cases by the law enforcement, as dangerous criminals. The slaveholders in previous American societies greatly associated the blacks with crime. The association greatly proved as justification for of the slavery institution. The American South historically experienced high violence levels; this has been linked to violence due to the enforced slavery. In the 1970s and 1980s homicide and also drug influenced violence, was greatly related to the youthful blacks, especially within the inner cities. . Perceptions, recent research studies and crime statistics in America illustrate that the black American males engage in most violent crimes, when compared to other racial groups. Also, the African American males are presently overrepresented in the prison system of the United States. The popular American culture enhances the crime levels of African Americans, especially the youthful males. This is because the African Americans are continuously associated with crime. The illustration of crime by the conservative politicians is publicly identified as a metaphor description of the black race. The popular culture also illustrates the young African American criminal image, through entertainment and sports. The author illustrates that the popular culture creates the connection between; sports, race and crime (Welch 287).
The author agrees with negative effects of racial profiling. Through the years, the political leadership of America has continuously denounced the injustices that are generated through ethnic profiling in the criminal justice system. Presidents Bush and Obama continuously illustrated that the discriminatory action should end. John Ashcroft, Former United States Attorney General, illustrates that racial profiling must end, because all Americans, regardless of status in the society, should view law enforcement officers as protectors of their constitutional rights. Despite the strong rebuke of racial profiling by the top leadership of United States, racial profiling is still a common issue especially in the law enforcement sector. The “stop and frisk” regulation in for instance New York City, still profiles the young African Americans. Also, the FBI continuously engages in the unconstitutional monitoring of places of worship, such as mosques. The FBI also engages in surveillance of private residences and offices, without adequate legal authorization. The continued application of racial profiling by the law enforcement agencies, minimizes the trust of the minority members of the society, and hence hinders cooperation. Federal legislations should be introduced; to prevent the law enforcement officers from racially profiling certain segments of the American population. The passage of legislations outlawing the racial profiling of any form is very critical in restoring the trust of the minority members of the American society, and the criminal justice system (Ryberg 84).
The three topics relate to each other through the common subject of ethnic profiling in the criminal system of United States. The ethnic profiling subject is very significant, because it creates debate on how to end the negative consequences of the stereotypic action. This implies that the leaders of American are putting in place measures that can hinder or outlaw the activity. I have learned that ethnic profiling is negative, because it reduced the rights to all Americans as illustrated in the Fourth Amendment. The future of the discussion will focus on legislative deterrence to ethnic profiling conducted by the law enforcement officers. The next conversation of ethnic profiling in America will focus on the responsibilities of law enforcement agencies in ending the negative practice in the criminal system.
