Sickle cell anemia
Abstract
This paper focuses on patients suffering from the hereditary trait of sickle cell disease with a focus on sickle cell anemia. The paper gives insights into the causes, treatment and diagnosis of the disease while giving advice on care and handling of patients. It analyses how the sickle cell anemia is passed from parents to children through crossing of genes and gives recommendations on how to prevent the spread of the disease among parents who are carriers. The paper also gives recommendations on ways of using technology as a means of research in the treatment of sickle cell anemia through the use of modern devises such as the pain diary devices.
The paper concludes by giving recommendations to parents and patients who are affected by the disease on the best way to gain quick recovery when affected by a sudden attack of the disease. It also finally advises on the best practices that should e done by patients to ensure that they stay healthy and avoid infections that may cause sickle cell anemia crises.
Sickle cell anemia
Sickle cell disease (SDC) is an inherited group of diseases that are incurable. The disease occurs in the gene of ether the mother or the father. Individuals whose parents are carries of these genes or whose parents are affected are at most risk of the disease. The red blood cells of individuals who have sickle cell anemia are C-shaped. Sickle cell anemia occurs in individuals who have 2-sickle cell genes (Bloom 2009). Individuals who are carries of the disease are generally asymptomatic and hence are not affected completely. They however can pass the gene to their children who may be affected. Sickle cell anemia is most wide spread in regions that are prone to malaria. The sickle cell trait is an evolutionary adaptation since individuals who have it are not affected by malaria. The disease is found in African Americans but has also been found to affect individuals in Africa, the Mediterranean region, South America and Spanish speaking nations.
Diagnosis
Sickle cell anemia can be diagnosed using the amniotic fluid that is present in the womb of a pregnant mother or by running a blood test after the baby has been born (Tapper 1999). The signs usually begin pretty early during the first year of birth; these signs may include frequent infections accompanied by crises. In young children, the signs and symptoms can be detected by observing their behaviors, behaviors such as inactivity or not wanting to play with other children due to joint pains may be cause for parents to be keen. Young men are also affected in that they are unable to have sex due to the creases. Parents should ensure that the children are well taken care of because they are the ones who are most predisposed to the disease. Family physicians should be called to test for the disease because in most cases the parents pass the gene to their children without knowing they have.
Treatment
Sickle cell can be treated in many ways depending on the stage. In very extreme cases where the patient is experiencing extreme pain, there is the option of bone marrow transplanted (Peterson 45). This process is however dangerous and risky since it is difficult to find individuals whose bone marrows march and there is a possibility that the body may reject it. Treatment of the sickle cell disease also varies from individual to individual. These variations are brought about by the different intensities of pain that are experienced by the patients. The pain could be mild or it intense. Mild pains are treated using over the counter drugs such as morphine and other antibiotics. Intense pains can be remedied by rehydrating the patient. Rehydration works because in this case the pain is as a result of the dehydration of the patient. In cases where the pain is extreme, Peterson advises that the patient be taken to a hospital and treated with a dose of hydroxyurea. Hydroxyurea works by stimulating the production of the fetal hemoglobin. Fetal hemoglobin remedies the severe pains by reducing the chances of blood cells from sickling and they also ameliorate anemia (Peterson 2008).
Pain diary device
Technological advancements have enabled doctors to be able to monitor the health of their patients on the go. These devises can be used to monitor the progression of sick cell anemia to help in its treatment. The pain diary devise is a device that records the pain levels that an individual’s experiences within a specified period of time (Bjorklund 2010). When worn by a sickle cell anemia patient, the diary can show the degree of pain the patient suffers on a range of 1-10.1 in this case would mean less pain while 10 means a lot of pain. The devises can also be configured to feature pain face scales to depict pain levels. The devises are preset to measure pain either daily or weekly depending on the results required.
Chances of Recovery
Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease hence the patient can never fully recover from the disease. Individuals suffering from the disease however do experiences periods of crisis which are usually triggered by infections (Viera 1986). The bouts range from individual to individual but most patients are usually between the two extremes. The recovery of a patient during a specific bout usually depends on how fast the patient is taken to the hospital (Jones 12), parents and individuals affected are advised to stay near medical centers or places they can access medical care fast since the disease in most cases attacks suddenly.

Summary of the Podcast: How not to pitch a Billionaire
In the podcast, “How not to Pitch a Billionaire,” the main message that Alex Blumberg communicates is that there are serious challenges for new beginners who want to invest yet they do not understand business ideas. Blumberg communicates the point that it is never easy to come up with a successful business idea, yet good business people must be sensitive to the good ideas that can develop successful companies. According to Blumberg, meeting other business people and investors who have successful investments is an important to step towards a successful start-up. Chris Sacca is one of the business legends that influenced Blumberg’s ideas about the first company he developed. Bloomberg explains that Sacca invested in companies like Instagram, Twitter, and Kickstarter, and that such successful business people can be important sources of knowledge for beginners who lack business ideas.
The relationship between Blumberg and Chris Sacca is important for learning how to pitch successful businessmen. Sacca is a billionaire. Blumberg wants to become one. When he pitches Sacca for the first time, Blumberg does it wrongly. Blumberg narrates that the first pitch he makes to Blumberg was disastrous. He made the pitch, “Near a highway overpass along West Pico Boulevard, near Los Angeles,” (Blumberg 1). Blumberg learns from his mistake of wrong pitching. He explains that when he pitched Sacca wrongly, Sacca pitched him back in the right way as he should have pitched him. The important thing that Chris does, however, is listing all the reasons why he cannot invest in the company that Blumberg developed. Chris does not think that Blumberg’s company can be profitable because he lacks the correct strategies to execute his ideas (Blumberg 1).
At the end of the interaction between Chris and Blumberg, Blumberg says that he feels confused about the idea of his company. However, he also feels encouraged that Chris invites him back to come and pitch another successful investor, Matt Mazzeo. In other words, Chris learns the ways he can present his company ideas and the issues to focus on so that investors can buy his idea. People who want to start up companies should not expect investors to buy their ideas immediately. On the first instances, the investors may avoid buying the ideas but such rejection offers them an opportunity to learn about good business ideas.
One of the things that Blumberg learns from Chris is that conviction is an important thing for investors. Chris uses the case of his writing of the cheque worth 25,000 dollars to Twitter. Blumberg learns that he may have lost Chris’s investment in his idea because he lacked the conviction spirit that Chris talks about. In the podcast, Chris Sacca explains to Blumberg, “As any seasoned entrepreneur knows, a great idea is not enough to get you funding. You are selling yourself as much as you are selling your service,” (Blumberg 1). The podcast also portrays Sacca telling Blumberg that “He (Sacca) does not want to see Blumberg’s slide deck which could be a crutch,” (Blumberg 1). He also says that rather than seeing his slide-deck, he would go on a walk from his office. Sacca’s ideas make Blumberg feel thrown off, but he learns that it is not easy to get an investor who is ready to invest in your company. Pitching the investor correctly is the greatest way to get him buying your company’s idea.

Los Angeles Musical Map: Los Lobos Rock Band
Los Lobos refer to the Spanish terminology meaning the wolves. The Los Lobos comprise the several Grammy award winning band that originates from California, in East Los Angeles. The music group illustrates the American Chicano music, and rock band. The music of Los Lobos is influenced through rock n roll, country, R&B, Tex-Mex and blue-eyed soul. Certain traditional music genres also influenced the Los Lobos. The genres are; nortenos, cumbia, and boleros. The rock music band was formed between the duration 1973 and 1979. This duration also has some of the initial music releases of the rock music band. The vocalist and also guitarist of the band, David Hidalgo, and the drummer of the band, Louie Perez, initially met and understood each other at Garfield High School, located in the East Los Angeles region of California. The bond between the two was strengthened due to the musical desire for unique musical practices such as Ry Cooder, Fairport Convention, and also Randy Newman (Hilburn 7). The paper aims at discussion the annotated map for an internationally popular music, with origins in Los Angeles. The music band that has been identified in through the annotated map is the Los Lobos. The rock music band significantly influenced the entertainment and socio-cultural life of Los Angeles, and later on America and globally.
The duo also habitually listened to music records, played several musical instruments, and began developing songs. The duo engaged in requesting for reel-to-reel from other individuals like friends. This effectively enabled them to effectively develop several music track recordings, ranging from the parody music to the free form-jazz. The duo later on enlisted Cesar Rosas and also Conrad Lozano, the two were fellow students. The four made the complete 1973 Los Lobos music line-up (Erlewine 28).
The four produced their first album referred to as the Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles. The album was recorded in 1977, through two Hollywood studios. The recording duration was approximately four months. During that duration, it was challenging to get music practice sessions, because all the group members worked in regularly jobs. Louis Torres, their producer, was very instrumental in identifying an appropriate recording studio. The identified studios were appropriate because they were flexible to accommodate night recordings. This created time for the band to begin music recordings. Majority of the songs produced by the band, were recorded in a studio located on Melrose Avenue, and also another low cost studio located on Sunset Blvd (Gale 17).
The band members were not comfortable with only playing the top 40 songs in America. This led them to start practicing the traditional Mexican songs that they listened to during their childhood. The new music approach developed good audience reaction; and hence the music band changed the music genres. In the mid and late 1970s, the music band staged music shows during weddings and also dances. The Los Lobos also effectively adapted to the new music trends, especially the trends in the Hollywood music scene. This made the music band to integrate rock in its musical sound. The original name for the group was Los Lobos del Este, which refers to “the Wolves of the East.” This name for easy identification was reviewed to the easily pronounced Los Lobos (Roberts 43).
The initial significant public appearance of the band occurred during 1890. This was during the Olympic Auditorium that took place in Los Angeles. Their participation at the event was ensured through being hired by CD Presents and David Ferguson, to grace the opening occasion for the event. In 1983, the music group produced the play “…And a Time to Dance.” The play was appropriately reviewed by critics; however, only 50,000 copies of the play were distributed and sold. The EP sales enabled the music band to buy a Dodge van, which was used during band tours in the United States. The first major album of the group was produced during 1984 summer period. The album was titled “How Will the Wolf Survive.” The title of the album and song was inspired through one article of the National Geographic that was titled “Where Can the Wolf Survive?” The title of the album described the challenges that the music band experienced when striving to be successful in the United States, and at the same time observing their Mexican roots (Erlewine 32).
In 1986, the Los Lobos members performed alongside Tomata du Plenty during the punk rock musical referred to as Population: 1. The rock music group in 1987 released anther album called “By the Light of the Moon.” During the same year, the band recorded soundtrack for the movie La Bamba produced by Ritchie Valens; and also the title track that topped the singles chart for the band. During 1988, the music band produced the third album that was called La Pistola y El Corazon. The album had both traditional and original songs of Mexican origin. The 1980s and the 1990s saw the music band engage in extensive music bands. The world tour also compromised activities such as opening the entertainment acts like; the Grateful Dead, U2, and also Bob Dylan. In 1990, the music band recorded and produced The Neighborhood. Thereafter, the Kiko was produced and the band also engaged in the production of “Bertha” song that was mostly performed live. During the twentieth anniversary of the music band, they produced collection of singles in two CDs, live recordings, and out-take (Gale 21).
In 1995 the rock music band released the prestigious and bestselling musical record titled Papa’s Dream. The veteran guitarist Lalo Guerrero participated in the production of the Music for Little People Records. Los Lobos was also featured in the film titled Desperado. The album track titled “Mariachi Suite” received the Grammy Award for the Best Pop Instrumental Performance. The Grammy award is the last one, as at now. The Grammy award was in the group referred to as the Best Mexican-American Performance in 1983. During 1996, Los Lobos produced the Colossal Head. The album was, however, dropped by Warner Brothers; despite being effectively acclaimed. The music band participated, together with the Money Mar, towards Silencio=Muerte: Red Hot + Latin. The combined album had the main purpose of creating awareness of the effects of AIDS. The album was recorded by Red Hot Organization, and the act entailed “Pepe and Irene” (Gale 19).
The Mammoth Records signed the music band in 1999, and immediately thereafter released This Time. Mammoth participated in releasing Del Este de Los Angeles that was produced in 1977. In 2002, the Los Lobos produced the debut album Good Morning Aztlan, with the Mammoth records, and also in 2004 produced The Ride. The Ride comprises several artists; for instance, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, and Bobby Womack. Los Lobos produced their initial full-length DVD in 2004 that is titled Live at the Fillmore. The DVD describes the activities of the band during the two day duration, at the significant San Francisco venue (Hilburn 9).
The music band has been very influential in the entertainment industry of Los Angeles, American and internationally. The music has also been very effective in enhancing and integrating cultural aspects of entertainment in the mainstream media. The traditional elements of music performed by the band have been effective in integrating the Latin and Hispanic American traditional music in the American mainstream entertainment.
