Choose three peer-reviewed research papers to critique from the journal Social Work Research. They must all have different methodologies, preferably quantitative, qualitative and mixed method, participatory action or single subject design. So for example the first one could be quantitative, the second mixed method or single subject design and the final one qualitative. Write a 2-4 page paper for each, APA format that critically appraises the study. Use the critical appraisal checklists (discussed in class) and refer to material covered in the textbook as well as material covered in class to summarize the study, discuss strengths, weaknesses and limitations of design and methodology of the study.
Articles should be from the social work literature in the library databases. Students can use a critical appraisal of research as outlined in the Csiernik text, (p.217-221) as well as templates for critiquing specific kinds of research online to look at what is useful to include in the critique. Look at the detailed description above and on Blackboard for information about what you should cover in these papers. Remember we are critiquing design and methodology here, not theory or clinical approaches. Use of the textbooks and course material is required for successful completion of this and all assignments.
We have done two previous article critiques, one on a qualitative article, and one on a quantitative article. We have discretion on which research method we choose, but it MUST still be from a social work journal. Cultural relativism asserts that every culture has its own set of customs and beliefs, and that culture must be understood by the standards and values of the people within that culture. The paper you write will be a treatment review of the Efficacy of Pharmacotherapy for Convicted Pedophiles. In doing this you will need to review journal articles that conduct clinical trials examining the efficacy of pharmacotherapy on Pedophiles. Your first task will be to conduct a literature review finding journal articles that conduct randomized double blinded placebo controlled studies examining the efficacy of various types of medications administered. You should also examine the literature to see if there are any head-to-head comparisons comparing the efficacy of different medications.

Same year, (summer); My family had gone out on the lake; skiing, tubing, all fun for the time being, until my sister (then 6 years old) had started sitting on the back of the boat, she had been inhaling carbon monoxide, passed out on my other sister who had been sitting there with her, thought she was sleeping, mom called out her name, no response , uncle did CPR, unconscious no reaction, suddenly woke up speaking gibberish, thought possible brain damage, called ambulance, rushed to hospital, ran tests, she was okay.

The final assignment for this course is an academic research article critique. The purpose of the critique is to ensure that you know how to read and critically assess research for use in your own research, to understand social problems in society, support decision making in public policy, or to influence one’s own individual research approaches.
Focus of the Final Paper
Reading and critically analyzing academic research reported in journal articles is an important part of learning and applying scholarly research for multiple applications within your discipline. Through the first four weeks of this course, you have become more familiar with the various components of research design. For this final assignment, read and critically review one of the journal articles provided in the list by discipline (below). You may choose from any of the lists, however you will probably find one from your own discipline to be of greater interest to you and more useful for future reference.
