Women in Israel
Book Report assignment: Memoir, Autobiography or Biography

Make sure the book facilitates your focus on a ‘Women in Israel’ and that it is a memoir, autobiography or biography. Make sure that the topics within the book are useful in expanding this area into a full research paper for the second part of the assignment. Use different sections of the course, different topics that we have discussed, to guide you as you analyze the book. This essay is worth 20% of your grade. Length 6 pages, 1500 words.
Pick a woman you are interested in or find challenging.
Write an essay about her life as told in the book. Research those stories to make sure that the biographical narrative flows with some accuracy. If there are major discrepancies in the life story try to figure out why they are there, what function do they play?
Why is this person of interest? What is challenging or significant here? What was most probably the reason for the book to be written or published? What kinds of evidence are given and what kinds of arguments are present? What assumptions (implicit or explicit) inform this book and are they clear, helpful or justified? What are the author’s goals and are you convinced?
Try to place your subject within the main frame of Israeli cultural, national, or political contexts. Do not overplay this element as you will come back to this in the second research paper.
These are some basic and general questions you should consider in your essay. Probably there will be a number of other issues and problems that you will confront as you examine the work under review, and you should not limit yourself only to answering the questions above.
Your major focus should be on the work you are reviewing, but there is need for extra reading or research in order to do this assignment. Please use a clear and consistent citation style and provide a complete bibliography of all the sources you do draw on, including the book under review. I assume that you will be familiar with the readings and discussions that are a part of this course, and that you will be able to relate the ideas and issues raised in the course to your review wherever they are relevant. Refer to class discussions and readings when relevant. Cite those appropriately. There will be times when the author contradicts what we learned in class. You decide how to deal with those divergences.
