Charting the cinematic developments from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities since the 1970s, we explore the national/global interface in Chinese film history, and investigate the shifting dynamics between art, ideology, and material conditions in and beyond Greater China. We consider issues of space, gender, nationalism, colonialism, censorship, diaspora, and other relevant theoretical perspectives. We will watch films directed by veteran filmmakers such as Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Zhang Yimou, Jia Zhangke, Peter Chan, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Wayne Wang, as well as up-and-coming young filmmakers whose works provide the most current commentaries for Chinese film culture in the age of global capitalism.
