Using your best academic prose, write a cogent, text-specific response to one of the following questions over Shakespeare’s Richard III:
Throughout the play Richard is self-consciously “theatrical” in staging himself in various situations. In this sense, Buckingham may be regarded as his “stage manager”—though Richard himself always is in control of the situation (at least until the end of the play). Making specific references to the text, demonstrate and explain Richard’s “theatricality.”

Your response should be in the form of a well-reasoned argument that makes specific use of the primary text as well as any other secondary materials you think necessary—e.g., Jean E. Howard’s essay, “Shakespearean History”; commentary on the play; and so forth.

Using your best academic prose, write a cogent, text-specific response to the following questions over Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet:

In what ways is patriarchy represented in the play? How is it challenged? Is it overcome or simply reinstated at the end of the play? Has the “ancient grudge” between the houses of Capulet and Montague really been healed at the play’s end? (Be sure to define the term patriarchy).

Henry the Fifth

For what ostensible purpose does Shakespeare populate the cast of Henry V with representatives of various nationalities of the British Isles? Any dramatic reason for doing this? Any hints of “classism” here? See the play again, carefully, especially King Henry’s “St. Crispin’s Day” speech before Agincourt and his reading the roll of the dead after the battle.

After his success in wooing Lady Anne (in front of the coffin of her father-in-law, no less), Richard delights in finding that his physical deformity somehow becomes an erotic asset, obviously fueled by his growing personal and political power. Can we view Richard’s quest for the throne in terms of an erotic trajectory—and if so, at what point in the play is that “deflated”? Consider bringing into your discussion one or more of the following: the Instructor’s “Study Guide for The Tragedy of King Richard the Third”; Jean E. Howard’s essay, “Shakespearean History”; and Stephen Greenblatt’s introductory essay, “Richard III.”

by people in early modern England.

Diana is a 37-year-old mother of 2 children. She used to exercise fairly consistently (mostly jogging and light aerobic activities) before having kids. Ever since she had her first child 9 years ago, she has not been very active. Diana has her 20-year high school reunion coming up in 3 months (12 weeks). She would like to look and feel her best and is eager and willing to spend the next 12 weeks doing what she can to change her body.
