Your fast-food franchise has been cleared for business in all 4 countries (United Arab Emirates, Israel, Mexico, and China). You now have to start construction on your restaurants. The financing is coming from the United Arab Emirates, the materials are coming from Mexico and China, the engineering and technology are coming from Israel , and the labor will be hired locally within these countries by your management team from the United States. Strong cognitive abilities are usually considered a very important and positive trait to seek when hiring new employees. However, one police department decided not to higher those who scored too high on a cognitive skills exam on the grounds that people who are too intelligent will not be satisfied with their job as a police officer and will end up quitting (Naish, 2013). This of course is a controversial policy that resulted in at least one lawsuit.

For this assignment we will be looking at individual characteristics that may predict job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and job performance for police officers. Being a police officer is a demanding job that required strong physical capacity, sharp mental capacity to deal with difficult and life threatening situations, and strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively work with the communities they protect and serve. The issue of what traits to look for in police officer recruiting is a controversial one.

Now suppose a police department has hired you as a consultant to come up with an exam to assess personality and other traits of applicants to the department. The department is looking to hire applicants who meet the following criteria:

Research Question: You have been assigned the task of understanding how deviance is defined in a given social context or setting and how its relevant behaviors, traits, and identity markers are controlled therein. You must first identify a setting and select a type of deviance (NOT illegal activity) to observe. In it, you will determine how deviance is defined and how the behavior, traits, and identity markers of those engaging in it are controlled by others. Next, you will use this information to explain how and why deviance shapes a particular type or types of “conforming” interaction in that setting. You must complete the following steps, but you can and are encouraged to add other components or to improvise as your efforts demands. Your written paper will address Steps 2-4. Step 1: You must conduct at least two hours of observation in a live setting where you suspect a type of deviant behavior is taking place.
