Borrowed Theories Guiding Practice

Choose a borrowed theory and apply its framework to an advanced nursing issue (i.e., hostility in the workplace, instituting bedside reporting, and shared leadership).

In this thread you will have an opportunity to apply what you have learned in preparation of your TD 1 topic response post. As an advanced nurse in a specialty area, you will use borrowed theories, as well as nursing theory, to guide your practice.

The course outcome that will be used to guide the learning process is:

• Analyze theories from nursing and relevant fields with respect to their components, relationships among the components, logic if the presentations, comprehensiveness, and utility to advanced nursing

Write a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper ensuring that the content is academically well researched, practical and realistic.

Consider the following scenario: You work preparing for climate change in an urban city planning department and you will be presenting your findings to city leadership. Your role is to identify and review the key practical needs of an urban society and how they are being met today along with helping city leadership plan a recommended changeover to greener products and processes. You will also strategize and prepare for the potential global warming projections for your city.

Select an existing city or create your own, it can be large or small.

Identify the site and provide a map of your city along with a physical description of the land, topography, etc.
Research the global warming projections for your area and address them.
Provide an analysis of how the climate has shaped the land up to this point and a projection of how the physical land may change in the coming years due to climatic effects.

Identify the needs and services of this urban society.
Consider the kinds of energy used (coal, oil, gas, etc.), local food production versus transporting food in, clean water availability, air quality, transportation, education, cost of living, employment, healthcare, landfills, etc.
Determine if the way that key urban needs are met today is sustainable and/or harmful to the environment and need to be replaced by greener options.
Research and identify greener options for the city to implement for power, water, and other urban needs. Discuss how your city can start to introduce them. Explain how the practical greener options you have presented help the environment, reducing the cost of environmental cleanup in the future and reducing healthcare costs for the population. Discuss funding & planning options if possible, and methods to overcome potential barriers or resistance to the proposed changes.

Marcia Angell, a pathologist and medical ethicist, discusses the legal and ethical issues surrounding Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). Arguing that patients should have autonomy, Angell covers all of the standard claims in favor of PAS from a medical and legal perspective. She acknowledges Kevorkian from an informational perspective without discussing his situation in depth and without taking sides in his case. Angell is clearly in favor of PAS. Drawing from court decisions and professional journal articles; she uses a point-by-point format with herself as expert. The unusual feature in this article is Angell’s personal testimony of her father’s suicide following a terminal illness. This is a solid professional article from a credible proponent of PAS. This essay is useful in that it explores each side of the issues surrounding PAS and will offer a lot of background for my paper.

The purpose of the Final Paper is for you to culminate the learning achieved in the course by describing your understanding and application of knowledge in the field of employee training through the analysis of a scenario related to the creation of a training course.

Focus of the Final Paper

In the course, you have examined several areas of employee training. For this paper, you will be applying this knowledge by examining the creation of a cultural diversity training course.

Imagine that you are in training and development for a global organization. You have been tasked with the creation of a cultural diversity training course that all employees will be required to take. Before designing the course, you must consider the ethical and cultural issues of the task.

In an eight- to ten-page paper (excluding the title and reference pages), you must address the following:

Examine any legal implications in creating a training course that discusses culture. Identify what laws and regulations should be considered.
Explain how the demographic diversity of your employees affects discussions of cultural diversity.
Examine which ethical implications should be considered.
Examine if training can be standardized for all locations in a global organization. Analyze what media is best suited for training in a global setting.

Mini-Project: Coding Using NVivo

While hand-coding is one way to organize your data, you may also want to take advantage of software programs that facilitate the coding process. For this week’s activity, you will take the interview data that you collected individually, and code it using NVivo, which is one such software program. You will then compare your experiences with hand-coding and software coding, and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using a program like NVivo.

This is an individual assignment. Each researcher will code his or her own interview data.

To prepare for this Application:

Review the required reading for this week.
Using data collected from your interviews, code the data using NVivo.

The assignment:

Apply principles of coding to using software to code data.

Submit your coding structure and some kind of sample documentation (e.g. screen shots) showing supporting codes.

Write 2-3 pages analyzing your coding experience using NVivo. What was it like? What were the challenges you faced? What are some advantages and disadvantages of using software to code data for qualitative research?

Write a paper that focuses on the issue of threats of terrorism and natural disasters. Address the following:

1) The importance of incorporating a business plan contingency for addressing such threats.

2) What the contingency plan needs to include, for example:

a) Workforce training.

b) Mitigation of confusion.

c) Time management.

d) Building a response capacity.

e) Coordination of local health agencies.

f) Mitigation of fear and panic.
