Go to the link http://media.hhmi.org/biointeractive/click/shells_online/index.html and work through the lab sorting sea shells based on morphological characteristics to study evolutionary relationships.
Please take notes for your laboratory report. You will add an introduction later. Write a short note describing each step of identifying and selecting snails as you work through the lab. Please take a screen shot of the final drawing showing the evolutionary relationship of all snails listed.

Please answer the following questions:

Why was the scallop among the snails? (HINT: Watch “Dr. Olivera discusses major molluscan groups”)
What additional tests could be used to examine evolutionary relationships among molluscs (snail species)? (HINT: Watch “Dr. Olivera discusses how to classify shells”)
How was the name of different cone snail specied decided? (HINT: Watch the video “Dr. Olivera discusses species names”)
Where are cone snails found and what are their feeding habits? (HINT: Click on snail images on the final evolutionary tree for more information about species).
Describe the evolutionary history of snails (Molluscs). In which eon, era and period did the first snails evolve? (HINT: Textbook, chapter 14.3)

The laboratory report will have a title page (APA format), and an introduction. Summarize the life history of cone snails. List your steps to classify the snails under methods, post the final picture of snail specis under results and discuss limits of morphological classification in the discussion section of the lab report. Suggest additional tests which may clarify cone shell taxonomy. You should also have a reference section, with the textbook and web page listed in APA format.

Critical Thinking: Examination of Social Class

Pick a traditionally marginalized group in America. Conduct research using academically approved sources in order to describe and explain these groups’ experiences of social class.

Current projections suggest that if no policy changes were to be made in the years ahead, the Social Security trust fund would be depleted by 2041. This does not mean that there would be no money to pay Social Security pensions, as billions of dollars would continue to be collected each year, but it would mean that benefits would have to be reduced by about 25 percent, or that payroll taxes would have to be increased, at that point, by about 32 percent (Williamson & Watts-Roy, 2008). When discussions begin about which of these avenues to take, the debate of generational equity begins.

 

Generational equity refers to the concept that different generations should be treated in similar ways and should have similar opportunities. It is often invoked as an issue by those who criticize the share of societal resources that elderly persons consume today and are predicted to consume in the future (Cook, 2002). As with aged-based healthcare rationing, opinions about generational equity vary.

 

Discuss the concept of generational equity in the context of Social Security. Do you believe generational equity to be a valid and ethical argument?

As a result of the mortgage crisis beginning in 2006, several programs have been introduced by lenders and/or government agencies to provide homeowners with relief from mortgage obligations that would result in foreclosure and loss of a residence. In a two page paper (excluding the title and reference pages)

-Management is attempting to increase employees’ job satisfaction and reduce turnover by creating positive hygiene factors. These initiaitives include the follosing: 1) allowing employees to bring pets to work 2) creating workday intramural sporting events like basketball, soccer, and beach volley ball, 3) creating arcades where employees can play Ping-Pong, and video games, 4) establishing an information resource center in which employees can borrow the latest video games, movies, books, and magazines for free, and 5) providing a gym with groupd fitness classes.
