Motivation at New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc (NUMMI)

Origins of NUMMI.

The Fremont plant of General Motors opened in 1965, and after experiencing nearly decades of labour-management conflict, closed in 1982. At the time of its closing, over 6000 workers lost their jobs and nearly an equal number of grievances remained unresolved.

Soon after the closing, two forces set in motion events that would lead to a reopening of the plant with very different management philosophies and practices. GM needed to build a compact car for its product line to compete with the popularity of smaller imports, and management wanted to study the production methods of Japanese auto makers. Toyota needed to manufacture automobiles closer to its major offshore markets and wondered how well its highly efficient Toyota Production System would transfer to American workers and suppliers.

What emerged from these two independent management motives was an agreement to form a 50/50 joint venture to build both GM and Toyota vehicles in the Fremont plants. A separate corporate entity was formed, New United Manufacturing, Inc (NUMMI – pronounce “new me”), and the plant was reopened in 1984 with a decidedly different approach to management.

For a major part of your grade, you are going to research and complete an environmental issues paper. This will help you build the skills necessary to develop an informed opinion and present that opinion in written form. This project will serve as a final assessment for the course by analyze a controversial environmental issue of your choosing. You must examine the pros, cons, compromises, and tradeoffs of the issue by gathering credible information from various sources and assess the scientific credibility of the information. You will then develop from this information a well thought out paper that will address the major players involved, relevant cited facts, and a clearly identified opinion.

The topic of the paper is deforestation vs population growth. Use a minimum of 6 sources. The final paper should be double-spaced, 12 point, and 7 to 8 pages in length with citations in APA format. Anytime you use the writings or ideas of others as though they were your own, you are plagiarizing (even if you paraphrase). All information and ideas that are not a part of general knowledge must be cited. When in doubt, cite!

Your final paper should address the following key points:

The Controversy: Identify the controversy
The Major Players: Who is involved? Why are they involved?
Important Facts: State relevant facts concerning the issue. Try to separate fact from opinion. Try not to show your own bias. Properly use APA citations
Side One: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
Side Two: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
Your Opinion and Rationale: I believe that…, We should…, I feel that… Use supporting arguments and rationale. What arguments would you use to present to those who disagree with you? Cite all of your sources.
References: Alphabetize your sources. Make sure there are sources representing both sides of the issue.

Part 1

Begin by reviewing the Individual Project from Week 1 to ensure that you understand the assignment. Then, submit a draft of 500–700 words of your Community Policing Proposal for your instructor’s review.

Part 2

Create a PowerPoint presentation of 5–8 slides of your Community Policing Proposal that you could present to the law enforcement agency. Include the benefits that will manifest as a result of employing this plan. The presentation should demonstrate your knowledge of the community as well as a practical means for communicating the plan to the members of the police department and the community.

Nurses face multiple ethical issues within the practice setting as well as when conducting research. For this assignment, you will develop a scholarly paper that addresses the following criteria:
1. Discuss the type of research utilized in the study and provide rationale for the response.

Leadership Development and Recruitment Plan

Your supervisor has asked you to make some recommendations regarding the leadership skills necessary to successfully work through the merger at Banks. You have been asked to develop a standardized method of personnel selection for their hiring needs. This plan will be used in all of the company’s operations, both domestic and foreign, as there are more open positions that will need to be filled quickly. It must support the company’s goal of obtaining competitive advantage through talent management and acquisition.

Additionally, one of your first hiring needs involves recruiting electronics engineers with a BS degree and one year of experience in a manufacturing environment. The engineers will work a 12-month contract in China, after training in Centervale for a two-week period. The candidates should be suitable for the company’s current operations in Centervale and the subsidiary in China, as they will spend time at both locations. Skills in English and Chinese are preferred; however, English is required.

Your goal is to identify the most qualified candidates for the job while keeping in mind the unique nature of work environments that require overseas travel.

Imagine that you are an office manager and you have been tasked with the job of coordinating and heading the dismissal meeting for an employee layoff.

Propose three (3) ways that a manager can cope with any negative emotions that may accompany an employee layoff.
Describe a step-by-step process of conducting the dismissal meeting.
