Background

LGE is one of the leading global companies in the industry. It is composed of five divisions: air conditioning, business solutions, home appliances, home entertainment, and mobile communication. LGE has 114 subsidiaries worldwide and employs around 82,000 people. LGE is a South Korean company and as such has some unique characteristics derived from the South Korean culture and economic structure.

Directions

In this assignment, you will read several peer-reviewed articles.

First, read three peer-reviewed articles related to the South Korean economy, chaebols, and culture.
Then, search for at least one peer-reviewed article related to the strategic alliances.
Next, read at least one article on human resource strategies for Multinational Corporations (MNCs).
In addition, read a few articles related to the local and global operations of LGE.

Then, respond to the following:

Explain the organization and purpose of chaebols.
Identify the positive and negative characteristics of chaebols for both local and global economy. Also, explain the role they play in the South Korean economy.

Assignment 2: External Environmental Scan

In order to develop effective strategies, it is critical to understand the marketplace environment. In this assignment, you will explore the relationship between marketplace positioning based on environmental factors.

Throughout this course, you will work on a strategy audit for a selected organization. In Module 1, you selected an organization for your course project activities and completed a market position analysis for your organization.

In this module, you will conduct a comprehensive external environmental scan of your business unit, including a five forces analysis, to identify the relevant trends that pose opportunities or threats to your business. These will serve as inputs for a final strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis that will be due in Module 4: Assignment 2.

There are many elements that can go into an environmental scan, and your analysis will depend on the nature of your business unit, product portfolio, target market, and other factors related to the scope of your business.

Your environmental scan should include some or all of the following elements:

Economic factors and trends
Political factors and trends
Regulatory and legal factors and trends
Societal factors and trends
Technological factors and trends
Geographic factors and trends

Management practices differ, depending on the diversity within the organization. In this assignment, you will research the demographics for your area or city and apply those demographics to business operations.

This assignment has two parts. Complete both parts.

Part I

Research the population demographics in the area or state where you live.

Use the following guidelines for your research:

Complete the following:

List and describe the population demographics. Be sure to cover gender, race, national origin, age, disability, and religion. Create a table to present this information.
Explain how these demographics determine or affect the cultural dynamics where you live. For example, types of restaurants, specialty grocery items, entertainment offerings, public housing requirements, and education offerings.

Part II

Choose a business in your area and explain how the cultural dynamics might affect the way that business would conduct business.
Explain the considerations for leaders of the business you chose in managing the cultural diversity in terms of customer service and employee expectations. For example, one consideration might be to have customer service agents who speak Spanish in an area where there is a large Spanish-speaking population.

Assignment 2: Applying Management Theories

Theories of management originated in the early 1900s. They have influenced how we view management today. Post a short essay (minimum 500-600 words) that explores one of the early theories of management and addresses the following questions in the Discussion Area. Be sure to incorporate your weekly readings and cite your sources using proper APA guidelines (including in-text citations and references). Respond with meaningful feedback that adds value to the discussion to two classmates before the end of the week.

Assignment 1: Discussion—Implementing a Data Management System

With the implementation of business analytics, an organization will also need to implement a good information systems plan in order to collect, manage, and organize all of the data. Not only is an information system needed, but the data has to be organized in a structured way otherwise any queries will produce bad results. This could be catastrophic for an organization because managers would be making decisions based on bad data. To make sure that the query generates good reports, you need to think about how to best organize data for each of the markets you are exploring.

An organization does not have a good Management Information System (MIS) in place to help manage all of their data. What are some of the possible problems this could cause for decision makers?
Assume you are going to conduct some research in the field of toy making. What are some of the items for which you would want to collect data? For example: market trends in toy making, latest sales nationwide, etc. How would these pieces of data help the company to determine what toy to release for the holiday market?
With the implementation of an MIS for decision making, what would be some of the concerns related to ensuring that the organization can support the system? Would you control access to the system?
