Mini-Project: Coding Using NVivo

While hand-coding is one way to organize your data, you may also want to take advantage of software programs that facilitate the coding process. For this week’s activity, you will take the interview data that you collected individually, and code it using NVivo, which is one such software program. You will then compare your experiences with hand-coding and software coding, and reflect on the advantages and disadvantages of using a program like NVivo.

This is an individual assignment. Each researcher will code his or her own interview data.

To prepare for this Application:

Review the required reading for this week.
Using data collected from your interviews, code the data using NVivo.

The assignment:

Apply principles of coding to using software to code data.

Submit your coding structure and some kind of sample documentation (e.g. screen shots) showing supporting codes.

Write 2-3 pages analyzing your coding experience using NVivo. What was it like? What were the challenges you faced? What are some advantages and disadvantages of using software to code data for qualitative research?

Write a paper that focuses on the issue of threats of terrorism and natural disasters. Address the following:

1) The importance of incorporating a business plan contingency for addressing such threats.

2) What the contingency plan needs to include, for example:

a) Workforce training.

b) Mitigation of confusion.

c) Time management.

d) Building a response capacity.

e) Coordination of local health agencies.

f) Mitigation of fear and panic.

3) How the contingency plan’s particulars will be communicated to the various stakeholders (employees, consumers, local and national authorities, etc.).

Marcia Angell, a pathologist and medical ethicist, discusses the legal and ethical issues surrounding Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS). Arguing that patients should have autonomy, Angell covers all of the standard claims in favor of PAS from a medical and legal perspective. She acknowledges Kevorkian from an informational perspective without discussing his situation in depth and without taking sides in his case. Angell is clearly in favor of PAS. Drawing from court decisions and professional journal articles; she uses a point-by-point format with herself as expert. The unusual feature in this article is Angell’s personal testimony of her father’s suicide following a terminal illness. This is a solid professional article from a credible proponent of PAS. This essay is useful in that it explores each side of the issues surrounding PAS and will offer a lot of background for my paper.

Assignment 2: Using Financial Ratios to Assess Organizational Performance

Due Week 6 and worth 240 points

Using the financial statements from your selected health care organization in Assignment 1, develop a financial plan for the next three (3) years.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

Suggest the financial ratio that most financial analysts would use to evaluate the financial condition of the company. Provide support for your rationale.

Speculate on the organization’s ability to meet its financial obligations as they come due. Provide support for your rationale.

Based on your ratio analysis, determine whether the profitability trends are favorable or unfavorable and explain your rationale.

Using financial ratio analysis, predict whether or not the company will be viable in five (5) years based on its performance over the past three (3) years. Provide support for your prediction.

Use at least two (2) quality academic resources. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

In Assignment 2, using the same company from Assignment 1, you will focus on the company’s mission, introduction, and branding.

Note: You may create and /or make all necessary assumptions needed for the completion of this assignment.

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:

Develop a branding strategy for your product that covers the brand name, logo, slogan, and at least one (1) brand extension.
Assemble a marketing strategy for your product, and determine an appropriate time table to implement your plan). Provide a rationale for your response.
Prepare a positioning statement. Include a perceptual map that shows your company’s position against its competitors. From this map, create a statement that depicts your position. For example, “Our product is the fastest in its class for half the price.” Note: See pp. 54 – 55 in the textbook for examples of perceptual maps. You, as a HR Generalist, have been asked by your HR Director for your recommendations in terms of what tools your organization could use to better manage the talents of your employees. HR Oops! Case:

While effective human resource manage ment aims to create motivating jobs, poor leadership coupled with difficult circumstances can result in jobs that are so unpleasant that workers’ mental health begins to suffer. Researchers at the Australian National University analyzed data about working conditions and mental health in more than 7,000 adults over a seven-year period. They found that the mental health of workers in the worst of these jobs was no better than—and sometimes worse than—the mental health of unemployed adults.

The job characteristics that were mostly strongly associated with mental health were the job’s complexity and demands, job security, the perceived fairness of pay, and control over the job (for example, ability to decide how to perform tasks). In highly demanding jobs with low security, unfair pay, and little control, workers experienced declining mental health. Unemployment also had an impact on mental health, but it was not as severe.

People differ in what kinds of work they consider unbearable, but many would have that attitude toward working in an Alabama fish-processing plant. The rooms have to be kept cold, and they are wet as well. Some people would likely object to smelling fish all day long. Workers stand for at least 10 hours a day, making repetitive cuts. For all this, they earn minimum wage and limited benefits. In spite of these conditions, employers were able until recently to fill these positions with immigrant workers. But after Alabama passed a law requiring police to question individuals who they believe could be in the United States illegally, many of those workers left the state. Employers report difficulty filling jobs such as these with U.S. workers.

Questions

1. What would be the consequences to an employer of having highly demanding jobs with low security, unfair pay, and little control?

2. How could fish-processing plants like the one described here improve jobs so they can fill vacant positions profitably?

Part 1

Much of the work of the criminal justice system will never be seen by the general public. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, and grand juries determine the course of criminal cases well before a case is even committed to a public docket. In your paper, detail the special responsibilities prosecutors have towards initiating a criminal case against a defendant. In other words, how does a prosecutor make the decision to charge someone? In your paper:

Explain why a grand jury is used rather than the prosecutor simply issuing a criminal charge.
Based on the evidence presented by the prosecutor and the finding of probable cause that a crime was committed, discuss the purpose of a grand jury issuing a true bill (criminal charge) or not.

Examine different leadership theories and styles for providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people.
Leadership theories abound. The “great man” theory says leaders are born, not made. Participative theories state that leaders encourage participation and contribution from stakeholders. Situational theories indicate that leaders choose the best course of action. Leadership style is part of the contingency theory. Leadership style is the manner and approach of providing direction, implementing plans, and motivating people. The transformational or participative style creates employees accepting the company goals and objectives. This style is a sign of strength not weakness.
