Chapter 1: The Field of Organizational Development – An Introduction to Organization Development

Read Chapter 1 and give a two- page summary, and opinion of the chapter. Choose the illustration example that best fits your workplace, and explain why this is the best one for you.

The assignments must be formatted in APA style. Be sure to use either the writer’s reference textbook or use the APA document located in the course documents section of Blackboard.

Suppose you work as a human resource (HR) executive at Total Solutions, Inc., a culturally and geographically diverse organization. A recent government study on human statistics indicates that colleagues who share culturally similar backgrounds perform more efficiently and effectively on the job. These study findings, however, appear contrary to the basic research on the value of diverse workforces. John, the vice president of HR has read extensively about this study. He meets with senior management to discuss if the concept can be implemented at Total Solutions, Inc. The senior management reviews the study and decides to execute the process in one office before a policy decision is made.

John decides that the process should be piloted in the new HR office being set up in Atlanta. He receives the board’s permission to apply the concept in the new office. He needs to relocate five employees from the headquarters in New York to the Atlanta office. John obtains the list of employees based in the New York office. The list has a brief profile of the employees. John asks you to help him analyze the profiles and present your recommendations as to who are the best five employees for the Atlanta assignment.

Present your analysis to John in the form of a two- to three page report in Microsoft Word following APA format. Make sure you provide a clear recommendation of which five employees should be selected for the Atlanta assignment and that you apply the basic concepts of diversity in your selection process.  Provide rationale for your selection based on your examination of the evidence and references to at least three authoritative sources from the Argosy library or the Internet. Nanotechnology (also called nanotech) is a branch of materials science that deals with manipulating matter on the atomic scale. It is so called because this field deals with engineering on the scale of a billionth of a meter, also known as a nanometer. Nanotechnology seeks to solve a wide range of problems from the construction of atomic scale machines to changing material properties at the atomic level.

Use the Internet, Argosy University library resources, and your textbook to research the field of nanotechnology.

Write a paper discussing some of the basic scientific and technical concepts of nanotechnology. Do the following in your paper:

• Discuss current or future applications of nanotechnology in fields such as medicine, engineering, space exploration, fuel cell development, air and water purification, and agriculture.
• Provide at least three examples of real-world applications in use or in development with reliable references.

Brief Profile of Employees in the New York Office

e University of Nebraska Medical Center-Omaha hired you as a diversity management consultant. The vice president for center operations wants to highlight the medical center’s reputation for excellence in accommodating individuals with physical disabilities. As per the contract, one of your deliverables is to write an article on this topic for the medical center newsletter.

From your years as a diversity consultant, you are familiar with the ADA. Discuss the key aspects of ADA that you will share with all employees so they understand the importance of the topic. Include a discussion on how ADA assists organizations in maintaining a diverse workforce.

Write a two-page article, in Word, for the medical center’s company newsletter, which clearly identifies the key elements and importance of the ADA and how ADA can be used to help organizations maintain a diverse workforce.  Your article should conform to APA standards and include at least three references from the AU library and/or the Internet which support your assertions.

You are a business consultant to the National Minority Supplier Development Council. An international petroleum products distribution company, based in the U.S., consults with you on cultural diversity matters. It faces some complex choices at its overseas locations.  While equal opportunity, affirmative action, and individual civil rights are the law of the land in the U.S., this frequently is not the case in other countries. Therefore when moral and legal issues run counter to host-country customs, problems are bound to arise.

Prepare an executive summary, briefly discussing the following specific topics:

• Should U.S. civil rights laws apply to U.S. companies’ foreign operations? Express your opinion on this issue.
• Describe a cultural diversity policy for the firm expanding overseas operations. Highlight any differences that might arise in some Middle Eastern countries where a distribution center is currently being built.
• Explain the value of understanding the importance of, and complying with, the other country’s legal system while operating in a foreign country.
• Americans tend to believe that the U.S. legal system is better than that of most other countries. Discuss the ramifications of this belief in an overseas, culturally diverse operation.

Create a two-page executive summary in Word. Use at least three resources to justify your responses. Apply current APA standards for writing style to your work.  Include a title page and reference page(s) in addition to the summary.

1. Professionals must develop plans for gathering and using assessment data. Select three of the strategies presented on pages 139–142 of Assessing and Guiding Young Children’s Development and Learning, and explain how each strategy that you selected can be used to provide ongoing support for children’s development and learning.

Review pages 204–210 of Assessing and Guiding Young Children’s Development and Learning and explain how assessment data can be used within different contexts and for different purposes.

1. According to the DVD segment, “Partnering with Families,” communicating with families is an essential part of quality assessment practices. Review pages 194–205 of Assessing and Guiding Young Children’s Development and Learning and the DVD segment, “Partnering with Families.” Put yourself in the place of a parent of a young child. Describe how you would like to be involved in the assessment process and explain which reporting strategy or strategies that you would like your child’s teacher to use to communicate information about your child to you and why.

Weather balloons are used to gather atmospheric data during the balloon’s ascent. Eventually the density of the atmosphere will be close to the density of the helium inside the balloon and a point of equilibrium is reached. However, heating and cooling of the atmosphere will allow the balloon to rise and fall accordingly. Over time, the rising and falling of the balloon will generate altitude and velocity data that can be approximated with polynomial equations. For this problem, we will use the following polynomials:

altitude = -0.12t4+12t3-380t2+4100t+220

velocity = -0.48t3+36t2-760t+4100

where t is time in hours.
ASSIGNMENT:
Write a C program that will read from an input file called launch.txt a single integer number that represents the hours of data collected. The program will print to the computer screen and to an output file called balloon_results.txt. See the output format illustrated below.

A for loop will control time from 0 to the number of hours read from the input file, nhours, and time will increment by 1 hour. The for loop will pass time to two user-defined functions. The first function will compute altitude and the second function will compute velocity. The computed values are sent back to the main function and printed in tabular form. Note that all values are printed in integer format. Refer to the illustration shown below for the output format.
