Identify at least three aspects of the human side of management and leadership from the readings.

Business 101 2-3 page paper

The topics of management and leadership are important to a healthy and productive organization.  Students will write a paper focused on the human side of management and leadership using information from the course material, plus any supplemental material provided to you or from your own research.

This paper requires student to reflect on the various topics covered in chapters 6-8 and then select three aspects of the human side of management and leadership and write about what is valuable to you, not to employees or other stakeholders within an organization.  In writing this short paper, students are expected to explain why each aspect is valued and why.  In explaining why, students must support their reasoning using the course material.

Students want to avoid taking articles and writing the paper around the article.  Course material and articles contain information that will help students support their reasoning and it is the reflection of the material that will provide the basis for the paper.  Therefore, use the material in the articles to support your reasoning.

Required Elements of the Short Paper:

  • Identify at least  three aspects of the human side of management and leadership from the readings;
  • Explain  why the aspects chosen should be valued;
  • Apply the material learned in the course to support the reasoning of why these aspects are valued.  Make sure to include the page number in the in-text citation.

Required Formatting of Paper:

  • This report should be double spaced, 12-point font, and two to three pages in length excluding the title page and reference page;
  • Title page;
  • Introductory paragraph and a summary paragraph;
  • Write in the third person;
  • Use APA formatting for in-text citations and a reference page.  You are expected to paraphrase and not use quotes. Deductions will be taken when quotes are used and found to be unnecessary;

Discuss by Consider all three religions and compare.

The origins of Judaism and Hinduism are almost 4,000 years old. Buddhism arose from the teachings of a single Hindu teacher more than two thousand years ago. All three have changed and developed over the centuries. All three are very much alive today.

Concentrating on their current forms, compare the approaches of the three religions to the basic religious questions:

How should I think about ultimate reality (Hinduism)? Is there a Supreme Being (Judaism)? Should I even think of god, letting myself be my supreme authority (Buddhism)?

What is the relationship of human beings to this reality (God)?

What exactly is the concept of faith to each of these three religions? Is it the same as belief, or not? Consider all three religions and compare.

How do these concepts of the Ultimate Reality, Supreme Being or self help address the following questions: What is wrong with the world, and how can I help to fix it? What am I supposed to do with my life?

Consider the three religions, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Judaism. In an essay of approximately 700 to 800 words in length, answer the questions listed above. Be sure to use appropriate APA format for citations and to include at least one reference for each religion.

. List and briefly explain the four elements of negligence. Explain the significance of the order of elements.

PART I: Case Studies

Directions: Please provide detailed and elaborate responses to the following questions. Your responses should include examples from the reading assignments, if possible. Task #1

Assume you are the manager of an outpatient clinic that is part of a larger health care system. Complaints from patients about your clinic have recently increased in frequency and intensity. Some of your patients have complained about long wait times in the reception area. Others have expressed responsibilities without additional help. They also complain that the receptionists keep transferring calls to them that the receptionists should handle.

The nurses are very upset with the secretaries who will not retrieve the patients’ health records, which causes longer waiting time for patients. The nurses are also annoyed because the receptionists interrupt their work to ask questions. The physicians feel that they cannot do anything more because their days are very chaotic and they are stressed. They think the solution is to hire more front office staff.

Questions:

What performance improvement tool(s) would you use to identify all the possible reasons why patient complaints are increasing?
What performance improvement tool(s) would you use to gather information to confirm the actual reasons for patient complaints?
You think there may be more patient complaints on certain days of the week. What quantitative performance improvement tool(s) would you use to analyze this theory?
The front office staff and nurses tally information about the causes of patient complaints. What quantitative performance improvement tool(s) would you use to select the problem areas to work on first?
After redesigning the patient registration process, you want to monitor the effectiveness of your actions. What performance improvement tool(s) would you use to measure whether the number of patient complaints actually declines in the future?

Task #2

Locate a state in which there is a statewide trauma program. Describe the levels of trauma care that can be provided in various facilities in the state. Are there requirements for those facilities that affect the trauma registry? What kinds of data are collected? Are the data limited to the treatment in the facility only? Describe any studies that have been published on the basis of the use of the trauma program in the state. Describe some key outcomes of trauma treatment that are measured.
PART II: Essays

Directions: Please provide detailed and elaborate responses to the following questions. Your responses should include examples from the reading assignments, if possible. Your answer to each question should be at least 200 words in length and utilize APA guidelines.

2. Describe one safeguard that should be in place to protect the confidentiality of health information when a health care organization uses a home-based medical transcriptionist and one safeguard that should be in place to protect the security of that health information.

3. List at least two parties, in addition to the health information management professional, who should be involved in developing a health care facility’s policy on disclosure of health information to the press. Justify the inclusion of these individuals.

4. Can you ignore a subpoena or a subpoena duces tecum that is clearly defective, in that some key aspect is missing? Explain your answer.

9. Assume that at a medical malpractice trial alleging postoperative infection, exactly 50% of the evidence favors the plaintiff and 50% of the evidence favors the defendant physician and hospital. Among the defendant’s evidence is some indication that the patient did not comply with postoperative care instructions, including taking antibiotics to fight infection. Who is likely to win the case and why?

10. Assume that an employee of a hospital’s health information management department inappropriately released confidential information to a patient’s employer. The patient is suing for breach of confidentiality. List all the parties who could be held liable for this breach and explain why you have listed them.

Project 1: Organizational Theory

Instructions

Project 1 Organizational Theory (Week 3)

In the first assignment, students are given a scenario in which the shipping manager who has worked for Recycled Furnishings since the inception of the company is getting ready to retire.  The scenario serves to set the stage for students to demonstrate how management theories have changed over time.  For example, managing 30 years ago is different than managing in the 21st century.

In selecting an organizational theory that best describes the current shipping manager, students have to use the timeline to select a school of thought and a theory or theories of that time frame.  Students will need to research the theorist and theories to complete the assignment and answer the questions below.  Students are expected to be thorough in responding to Part One.

In Part Two, students are going to take what they have learned in weeks 1 – 3 and compare the management skills of the current shipping manager to that of you as the new shipping manager.

Part One

Recycled Furnishings is a division of an international home furnishing company called Thor Enterprises.  Recycled Furnishings makes glass sofas for outdoor use from recycled bottles and glass. The business has grown rapidly in the last thirty years and now that it has become a division of Thor Enterprises, the company is going international.  The shipping manager for Recycled Furnishings has been in his job since the start of the company. He is going to retire.  You have been hired as his replacement.

Select an organizational theory that you believe best describes the current shipping manager and which explains the organization and its structure;

Identify the theorist(s) who proposed the theory;

Discuss how the selected organizational theory and theorist fit into the school of thought of that time period.

Address the principles of the theory and how the manager would do his job and interact with his staff.

Using the course readings and your own research, explain in detail how you arrived at your conclusions.

Part Two

You would like to characterize yourself as a 21st century manager.

  • As a 21st century manager, compare the way you would manage versus the way of your predecessor.

What implications do the changes in management have for the future of Thor?

How will the new approach to the job likely change the shipping division?

Discuss the epidemiological health data that suggest toxin from Albert tar sands are responsible for brain tumours and cancer.

Having extracted the less polluting oil, we are now getting to the really dirty sludge. The world needs energy and Canada needs the tar sands, i don’t think people realize how big the sacrifice zone will be. Debate the need to develop the oil sands.

For the Allan Adam, Dene Chief, Fort Chipewyan and generations of his people, the land is life, then one day, the land changed. The worlds largest corporation came looking for oil. A sea of sand soaked with bitumen. Describe how the Alberta oil sands changed everything.

In a world running out of conventional oil, this is what is left, and there is a fortune to be made. Identify the skate holders.

The tar sands now supply more oil to the United States than any other foreign source. Describe the Canadian—US Government arrangements.

Describe how the Athabasca river, which feeds the Athabasca Lake, brings the riches of the land, but 120 Km upstream the river also feeds the tar sands and carries with it the toxins.

Discuss the epidemiological health data that suggest toxin from Albert tar sands are responsible for brain tumours and cancer.

Describe how the community of Fort Chipewyan, which relates heavily on traditional foods has been affected by waterer contamination, illustrate your findings with the physical evidence provided including fish which are inedible, deformed, bend over, crooked, partially eaten by acid.

The Fort Chipewyan family physician found diseases directly connected to toxins in the environment. The physician requested a baseline health study from Health Canada. Describe what happened with this request.

Describe what happened at the Press Conference on Fish Deformities held in Edmonton AB.

If you ask an Environment Canada media spokesperson about contamination resulting from tar sands operation, they will not tell you the federal government has failed to adequately monitor the mega-project’s effects on water. The tar sends are contaminating hundreds of kilometres of land in nor them Alberta with cancer-causing contaminants and neurotoxins. Review the contributions of University of Alberta scientist Dr. David Schindler in exposing the negative effects of tar sands production on local waterways and aquatic species.

Alberta Government claims that the tar sands development leaves the Athabasca Lake unaffected. Provide your opinion based on what you know.

The tar sand development is now the biggest construction project in the world. Summarize the findings published in National Geographic Magazine March 2009 – Vol. 215 – No .3. How did the Politicians react to this published investigation?

According to allen Adam, Dene Chief, Fort Chipewyan “ this development is taking place on private property, if you are going to do anything with the land, you have to ask us. We never sold the land, never gave it up, never surrounded it, but people still think they have the right to come in here and do what they want to do.” Discuss why under Canadian law he owns the land and has the right to hunt and fish. However where the development is taking place, the disruption is so extensive , that it is now fair to say that their properly rights, can no longer be meaningfully exercised, Because the habitat has been destroyed.
