Explain why these self-regulation skills are so important and how you will promote the learning of self-regulation.

Regardless of a child’s unique qualities, one thing remains the same; to improve learning and behavior, children must develop strong self-regulation skills. Read the article from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), “Developing Young Children’s Self-Regulation Through Everyday Experiences.”

The marshmallow experiment is a famous test conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year-olds were given a marshmallow and promised another only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Read the American Psychological Association (APA) article, “Delaying Gratification.”

Reflect on the information in the NAEYC article, the article, and your text and explain how toddlers with better self-regulation skills are less likely to demonstrate behavior problems in preschool. Explain why these self-regulation skills are so important and how you will promote the learning of self-regulation. How will you deliberately teach self-regulation as part of everyday experience? Share an example of your own self-regulation skills that you can model for others.

Identifying the critics and citing the sources in MLA style.

For this project, you will read one of the novels from the following list and create a presentation of approximately 12-15 slides that explores the novel, its author, and its place in literary history. This project will combine synopsis, historical context, and original analysis. You may use PowerPoint or other presentation software, such as Prezi or Keynote, to create your project. Requirements: Give a brief biography of the author (include the most interesting and pertinent details — omit the ones that do not directly illuminate the author’s life). Identify the school of literature (e.g. romantic, mystery, comedy, etc.) or type of novel as it is generally classified. Identify individual characteristics of the author’s style and include examples from the novel that illustrate this style. Provide a brief but informative synopsis of the work as a whole; this will prepare your audience for your analysis. Choose one section or chapter of the novel to analyze in depth (whatever elements are appropriate to the genre). Remember, to analyze is not to summarize. Analysis examines the individual elements of a subject, explaining how they function individually and as a whole. Summarize the critical legacy of the novel, including its critical reception upon release and how the novel is viewed today. Include quotations from actual criticism, identifying the critics and citing the sources in MLA style. Use MLA style throughout, and include a Works Cited page of your resources. Make recommendations of other sources dealing with this author and his or her work (including a website or two if found).

Explain how they would gather data for the study if it were to be carried out.

This is a research proposal. Each student will create a research proposal. Students will not actually carry out the research data gathering process. Students should expect to visit with their major program advisor for assistance in identifying appropriate topics for research. The first chapter is the Introduction Chapter. This chapter should include a background discussion of the problem under study. Secondly, a problem statement must be developed. Third, a purpose statement must be developed. Finally, the objectives of the research project should be included followed by key definitions and the scope and limitations of the proposed study. The second chapter is the Literature Review chapter. This chapter is the bulk of the proposal and should include an exhaustive library and computer search of related articles and materials. The subsections of this chapter should begin with a brief review of the problem under study followed by a lengthy theoretical review. The third chapter is the Methodology chapter. This chapter reviews past research efforts and offers support for the proposed data gathering techniques. An in-depth understanding of the methods and approaches will allow each student to determine their proposed methods and discuss them in detail. Student will explain how they would gather data for the study if it were to be carried out. The final two sections of the paper include the references pages and then the instruments and resume of the student. Instruments should include a student developed instrument, although existing inventories, scales, and survey instruments can be used as well.
