Canada’s commitment to an international treaty .

You
are required to submit an argumentative
research paper (10
–
12 pages)
in which
you
explore a
particular
aspect of Canadian foreign policy.
The range of possible topics is
quite expansive
, and students are encouraged to select a topic that interests them
. Among the
possibilities available, student
s might examine Canada’s bilateral relationship with another country,
Canada’s broad approach to a region,
Canada’s involvement in an important international issue
or
conflict, or perhaps
Canada’s commitment to an international treaty
.
A list of possible t
opics will be
provided for those students who benefit from some direction in choosing topics.
I am also more
than happy to meet with students on an individual basis to help them settle on a topic or narrow a
thesis. Indeed, you are strongly encouraged to d
iscuss possible essay topics with me early in the
semester. The essay should be submitted
at the beginning of class on
November
12
.
It is crucial that you avoid writing a purely descriptive paper. Instead, your essay must
advance a
concise argument
–
one t
hat is clearly articulated in a thesis statement. Even though it is
typically
only a
single
sentence
long,
the thesis is the most important part of a paper
. It should explain
very directly the argument advanced by your paper so that your reader knows in ad
vance what to
expect in the pages that follow. All of the research findings and ideas that you present in your paper
should be organized in a clear and compelling manner and should contribute to demonstrating this
thesis. The essay will be graded on a vari
ety of factors, including argumentation, organization, style, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
When preparing your paper, please be aware of the following expectations:
•
The essay must be typed and formatted with 1
–
inch margins, double
–
spacing
, page numbers
and a 12
–
point Times New Roman font
You are required to provide appropriate credit when using other authors’ material and must
do so via the Chicago author

date in
–
text citation style.
This style requires the use of
parenthetical citations and a references list at the end of the paper

FROM BOOK — Reilly, F., & Brown, K. (2012). Investment analysis & portfolio management (10th ed.). Mason, OH: South-Western Cengage Learning.
Chapter 8 – questions 3,4,5,6,7 and 10
3 The capital asset pricing model (CAPM) contends that there is systematic and unsystematic risk for an individual security. Which is the relevant risk variable and why is it relevant? Why is the other risk variable not relevant?
4 What are the similarities and differences between the CML and SML as models of the risk-return trade-off?
5 While the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) has been widely used to analyze securities and manage portfolios for the past 50 years, it has also been widely criticized as providing too simple a view of risk. Describe three problems in relation to the definition and estimation of the beta measure in the CAPM that would support this criticism.
6 You have been offered an opportunity to invest in one of the two fully diversified portfolios, Portfolio H and Portfolio L. While you know that the betas of these portfolios are identical, you only know that, on average, the stocks held in Portfolio H have a higher level of specific risk than those in Portfolio L. From what you know about the capital asset pricing model (CAPM), which portfolio should you invest in? Which portfolio should give you a higher expected return?
7 You have recently appointed chief investment officer of a major charitable foundation. Its large endowment fund is currently invested in a broadly diversified portfolio of stocks (60 percent) and bonds (40 percent). The foundation’s board of trustees is a group of prominent individuals whose knowledge of modern investment theory and practice is superficial. You decide a discussion of basic investment principles would be helpful.
A — Explain the concepts of specific risk, systematic risk, variance, covariance, standard deviation, and beta as they relate to investment management.
You believe that the addition of other asset classes to the endowment portfolio would improve the portfolio by reducing risk and enhancing return. You are aware that depressed conditions in U.S. real estate markets are providing opportunities for property acquisition at levels of expected return that are unusually high by historical standards. You believe that an investment in U.S. real estate would be both appropriate and timely, and have decided to recommend a 20 percent position be established with funds taken equally from stocks and bonds. Preliminary discussions revealed that several trustees believe real estate is too risky to include in the portfolio. The board chairman, however, has scheduled a special meeting for further discussion of the matter and has asked you to provide background information that will clarify the risk issue.
To assist you, the following expectational data have been developed:
Correlation Matrix
Assets Class Return Standard Deviation U.S. Stocks U.S. Bonds U.S. Real Estate U.S. T-Bills
U.S. Stocks 12.0% 21.0% 1.00
U.S. Bonds 8.0 10.5 0.14 1.00
U.S. Real State 12.0 9.0 -0.04 -0.03 1.00
U.S. Treasury Bills 4.0 0.0 -0.05 -0.03 0.25 1.00

B — Explain the effect on both portfolio risk and return that would result from the addition of U.S. real estate. Include in your answer two reasons for any change you expect in portfolio risk. (Note: It is not necessary to compute expected risk and return.)
C — Your understanding of capital market theory causes you to doubt the validity of the expected return and risk for U.S. real estate. Justify your skepticism.
10 Some studies related to the efficient market hypothesis generated results that implied additional factors beyond beta should be considered to estimate expected returns. What are these other variables and why should they be considered?
Chapter 8 problems 5a and 5b (no need to plot them on the SML for 5b), and 6a,b,c .
5 Based on five years of monthly data, you derive the following information for the companies listed:
Company ai (intercept) ∂i rim
Intel 0.22 12.10% 0.72
Ford 0.10 14.60 0.33
Anheuser Busch 0.17 7.60 0.55
Merck 0.05 10.20 0.60
S&P 500 0.00 5.50 1.00

A — Compute the beta coefficient for each stock.
B – Assume a risk-free rate of 8 percent and an expected return for the market portfolio of 15 percent, compute the expected (required) return for all the stocks.
6 The following are the historic returns for the Chelle Computer Company:
Year Chelle Computer General Index
1 37 15
2 9 13
3 -11 14
4 8 -9
5 11 12
6 4 9

Based on this information, compute the following:
A – The correlation coefficient between Chelle Computer and the General Index.
B – The standard deviation for the company and the index.
C – The beta for the Chelle Computer Company.
Chapter 10, complete questions 3,4,5,9, and 10
3 Besides comparing a company’s performance to its total industry, discuss what other comparisons should be considered within the industry.
4 How might a jewelry store and a grocery store differ in terms of asset turnover and profit margin? Would you expect their return on total assets to differ assuming equal business risk? Discuss.
5 Describe the components of business risk, and discuss how the components affect the variability of operating earnings (EBIT).
9 Why is the analysis of growth potential important to the common stockholder? Why is it important to the debt investor?
10 Discuss the general factors that determine the rate of growth of any economic unit.

.Explain three (3) of the most critical topics you have included in your outline, and propose a potential course of implementation.

Governor Jerry Brown Signs Assisted Suicide Law

According to the Los Angeles Times Newspaper, Governor Jerry Brown just signed a bill saying that assisted suicide is now legal in California. This bill will allow mentally capable people who have terminal illnesses to choose when to end their lives. In my own opinion, this is one of the biggest moral dilemmas in the world today. Do we let people suffer through illnesses that they feel they won’t recover form? Or, do we let them ease their pain by ending their lives prematurely? Personally, I would let them choose as long as they were mentally capable of making their own decisions. During a poll in May 2015, 68 percent of Americans were for euthanasia of terminally ill citizens. I believe that the Governor of California has made a very utilitarianism based approach by going with the majority decision here. If it will make the majority of America and the terminally ill happy to see their wishes granted and pain ended then why not pass the law? Under the LA times link is a video of a woman who wished to die under this new law.

Discussed and create an annotated bibliography for the source.

There will be three parts to this assignment in the following order:

  1. Dialogue
  2. Analysis of Characters
  3. Annotated Bibliography

Provide headings for each element of the assignment.

Length: 6-8 pages

Format: APA: Title Page/ Header/ 12 point font/ double space/ indentations/two citations

Dialogue

Directions: You are to create a dialogue of a social issue that interests you. You are engaging in an argument about the issue. There should be exactly three characters taking part in the argument. You can have two characters involved in the argument trying to convince one other participant. You are in control of the effectiveness of your argument and ideas. It should be clear to your audience what the main argument is and the end needs to offer some type of resolution. Be creative as possible. Your dialogue can consist of dialect. You may also find it necessary to offer narration throughout the argument.

Analysis of Characters

Directions: For this portion of the assignment you are to provide an analysis of each character. Review pages 689-706 in your text. As you are reviewing your dialogue it is important to categorize or classify the characters because they will fit a mode when it comes to argument. Use third person point of view only for this portion of the assignment.

There are three categories that you are to use in classifying your characters:

  1. Accord
  2. Neutral
  3. Resistance

Provide an explanation for each classification.

Annotated Bibliography

Directions: Locate two credible (preferably from the online library) sources on the social issue being discussed and create an annotated bibliography for the source. There should be at least five sentences for each annotation. You have to cite two times for each source provided. Below I have provided an example of how the annotated bibliography has to be set up. Eliminate contractions and only use the third person point of view.

Example:

Kuo, A. A., Etzel, R. A., Chilton, L. A., Watson, C., Gorski, P. A. (2012). Primary care

pediatrics and public health: Meeting the needs of today’s children. American Journal of

Public Health, 102 (12), E 17- E 23.

This article takes a look at the number of children suffering from illnesses like asthma and obesity (Kuo, Etzel, Clinton, Watson, & Gorski, 2012). The article is detailed and structured appropriately. According to Kuo et al (2012), “A major challenge for children’s and youths’ services is to develop more effective and efficient service integration models. In the present system, pediatricians tend to avoid asking parents about matters for which they feel inadequately trained and for which they are not aware of patient resources, including child development, obesity, breastfeeding, family violence, environmental health, and mental health” (p. E 17).  The article takes into account poverty, health insurance, and other primary factors that influences meeting the needs of children in this recession laden environment.

Discussed regarding MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES.

Write at least 5 full pages (typed, 12 point, double-spaced in essay form) selecting a public figure (James Sinegal) in a leadership position and why you feel that this person is successful based upon what we have discussed regarding MANAGEMENT PRINCIPLES. Use Academic journals and business periodicals.

Management Principles to consider:
1.Solving Problems analytically and creatively ( Investment, Incubation, Imagination, improvement)
2.Building relationships by communicating supportively, how did he build relationships and what was his communication style eg.(positive interpersonal skills, coaching and counseling, Descriptive or evaluative)
3.Gaining Power & Influence: How did he do it? What methods? e.g( sources of positional power, sources of personal power)
