Evaluate the significance of forecasting error for the technique or techniques you have selected.

the company prepares to meet demand and capacity requirements for its planned future growth, you have been asked to review the current forecasting strategy and help implement a new strategic plan for forecasting demand. The new forecasting plan ties directly to the overall strategic planning methodology established by the company. The company historically has used a time series method. The forecasting methods under consideration are the following:

  • Qualitative: human judgment, usually best used when little data is available
  • Simulation: the use of computer models or judgment to imitate customer behavior
  • Causal: used when there is a direct tie between demand and an environmental factor, such as cold weather
  • Time series: the use of historical data to predict future needs

Using research, complete the following:

  • Identify which forecasting technique or multiple techniques should be used in the future for the company’s strategy. Are there other techniques available that are not listed above?
  • Explain the technique you identify, and give an example of how it is used in the manufacturing, retail, and health care industries.
  • Detail if 1 of the 4 techniques listed above should NOT be used and why.
  • Evaluate the significance of forecasting error for the technique or techniques you have selected. What is the impact of error on your chosen technique?

Objective of the Portfolio Management Project

The objective of the Portfolio Management Project is to prepare an “executive level security analyst report and presentation” for a high-net-worth private investor. Your specific assignment is to research, analyze, and prepare a report and presentation to demonstrate your analytic skill and portfolio management understanding to this wealthy client. This report will require independent research (web-based or library), collecting price and dividend data for an investment portfolio over a 5-week period, careful financial analysis, and the proper application of key financial theories and formulas.
Situation
You are a Research Analyst working for a top portfolio management firm, “XXXX Portfolio Management”. A high-net-worth client has approached your firm with the objective of finding an analyst qualified to manage their large portfolio. Your firm has selected several of its analysts to develop test portfolios in order identify the best person to manage the portfolio of this rich client. You have been selected by your firm to develop a 5-week trial portfolio to present to the client (and class). Because of the importance of this client (and their potentially large investment) your fee for demonstrating superior portfolio selection and management skill will be substantial. The analyst with the best report will become the portfolio manager for this high-net-worth client’s portfolio (valued at over $100 million). Your portfolio management report and presentation will be submitted directly to your firm’s high-net-worth client with the approval of your firm’s Board of Directors. The success of your recommendations will determine the success of your firm in landing this large investor. (It is expected that your portfolio recommendations will not be the same as those reached by other analysts). You should do a market wide financial evaluation to determine the current situation, best investment course, appropriate asset allocation for this important client.
Portfolio Management Project Requirements
Your grade will be based on the quality of the final written report, and your class presentation of the report to your firm’s Board of Directors (the class) and to the high-net-worth client (your instructor). The class will review your presentation, make thoughtful and substantive responses, and you will be required to answer questions regarding your findings and recommendations. Possible topics in your report might be:
A discussion of your portfolio strategy, investment policy and security selection criterion.
How you selected and constructed your portfolio, and decided on portfolio weights.
Considerations of strategic and tactical asset allocation, style analysis, diversification, and sector allocation.
An evaluation of your portfolios performance; risk-return analysis, industry, sector, and market analysis, and correlation analysis.
Specific recommendations on alternative ways to improve performance with supporting rationale.
You are to consider all necessary and relevant stock market performance and information, trends, and projections in supporting your strategy. These factors should include, but are not necessarily limited to, stock screens, earnings forecasts, P/E ratios and industry comparisons, technical analysis and trends, capital market relationships, and analysts’ reports and ratings. Your report will specifically be concerned with risk and return, sector analysis, cumulative wealth, capital market line, security market line, and performance rankings. In addition, you must consider portfolio weights, commission costs and other factors covered in the course.
You will inform the class of your investment decisions by posting your strategies and initial portfolio in the Week 2 Conference topic “Portfolio Project – Buy your Portfolio”. The commission costs per trade (using CBOE Virtual Trade) are $9.95/trade for stocks and ETFs and $14.95/trade for options. The securities you select for your portfolio can be selected from any traded securities that are available on CBOE Virtual Trading.
Note: Investment constraints are (1) you cannot purchase the S & P 500 Index, (2) you cannot purchase bond funds, (3) you cannot purchase mutual funds (3) you cannot trade securities during the 5-week holding period and (4) Bonds cannot be purchased on CBOE. You will have to simulate your purchase of bonds using Yahoo! Finance or another source and track the purchase on your tracking spreadsheet. .
The investment schedule of the portfolio is as follows:
Week 2- Invest $100,000 in Stocks or ETS
Week 3- Invest $100,000 in Bonds
Week 4- Invest $100,000 in Options
Week 5- Invest $100,000 in Futures
Week 6- Sell the Portfolio

Portfolio Management Project Written Report and Presentation
Your final written report and the final presentation must be submitted at the end of Week 7 and presented to the class in Week 8. Each analyst should post their Report as a Main Topic in the Portfolio Presentations conference. Attach your final Written Report and Presentation (in MS PowerPoint) as two (2) files. Your report will be reviewed by the XXXX Portfolio Management’s Board of Directors representatives (you and your fellow students) and the high-net-worth client’s representative (your instructor).

Your class presentation will support your written analyst report and recommendations. Your presentation is a key part of your grade. You are also responsible for reviewing other presentations, contributing to discussions, and responding to their presentations with questions and discussions.

Explain to her the similarities and differences between financial and managerial accounting.

You have recently hired a new assistant, Susan Thompson, who previously worked in a financial accounting office preparing journal entries, which provide you with a recording of the day-to-day activities of the company and financial statements (income statement, statement of owners’ equity balance sheet, and cash flow statement). Although your new assistant has experience with and fully understands financial accounting, she has no experience with managerial accounting.

Memo #1 800 words (excluding title and references)

In a memo to your new assistant, Susan Thompson, complete the following:

  • Explain to her the similarities and differences between financial and managerial accounting.
  • Provide examples of managerial accounting reports that she could expect to see within EEC, and explain how management might use the information to make decisions.
    • Keep in mind that although the income statement, the statement of owners’ equity balance sheet, and the cash flow statement are generated in financial accounting, they are used to develop all of your managerial accounting reports.
    • Examples of a few of those reports are the horizontal analyzes, vertical analyzes, and ratios.

Memo #2 800 words (excluding title and references)

In a memo to the board of directors, discuss the information found in each of the following financial statements, and describe how accounting information is used by managers for planning and control:

  • Balance sheet
  • Income statement
  • Statement of cash flows
  • Statement of stockholders’ equity

Discuss the importance of identifying the best suppliers by explaining the impact of source selection on supply chain performance.

Your efforts with MLD Hospital have paid off. The corporation has hired SMP and your staff to provide supply chain management consulting services. Your team has begun analyzing the existing processes, and you have been tasked with developing the purchasing policies and procedures with focus on ethics in the supply chain.

Remember: From a supply chain management perspective, a company produces services or products. Clearly, MLD Hospital produces a service. This means that sourcing analysis must consider the raw materials necessary for producing this service (e.g., bandages, needles, blood, and medical equipment).

Using course materials and other resources, develop a paper for the hospital management consisting of the following sections:

  1. Discuss the importance of identifying the best suppliers by explaining the impact of source selection on supply chain performance.
  2. In conjunction with number 1, discuss whether the hospital will insource or outsource its sourcing needs.
  3. Develop a high-level ethics policy for the purchasing department at MLD Hospital, identifying general responsibilities and prohibited behaviors.

Prepare a report (4 pages) in which you reflect on your experiences from this exercise.

Select a peer or someone in your current or former organization whose work you are familiar with.  Arrange a meeting with the employee to discuss his or her performance.  If you are unable to meet in person, you may conduct the meeting virtually by phone or through a Skype call.  In a role play situation, pretend you are the manager and provide feedback on the employee’s strengths, weaknesses, and any opportunities for improvement.  During your meeting, make notes of the conversation between you and the employee.

Thinking about your meeting with the employee, evaluate your own performance during the review.  Were you pleased with the outcome? Do you feel the feedback you provided was effective?  Were there any areas in which your employee disagreed with the assessment? What would you do differently?

Prepare a report (4 pages) in which you reflect on your experiences from this exercise.  In addition, submit a copy of the notes/transcript you developed during your meeting.

Length: 4 pages, not including notes/transcript, title, and reference pages

Use the library and/or other Internet sources to research your topic. Your assignment should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your assignment should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources for this assignment.
