Demand for the company’s products is constantly increasing; therefore, the company must tighten the integration of its customers and partners into its information infrastructure.

Comprehensive Group Project: Widget Corporation Network Redesign

This case study is of a small- to mid-sized network. In this project you will evaluate the existing network and, based on findings and customer requirements, propose a new network design.

Project General Information

You are going to be working in groups of two minimum and no more than three. You are to start this project in Week 1 by contacting your fellow students through the Week 1 Discussion topic setup for this purpose and choosing the members of your team. Once you have your team in place, post your group name and members to the threaded discussion topic provided for that purpose. Should you not be a member of a group by the end of Week 1, the instructor will create and/or assign people to groups.

Scenario: Widget Corporation Network Redesign

This project involves redesigning the network infrastructure of Widget Corporation, a fictitious architectural company that designs medium to large office building in Canada, United States, and other industrial countries.

The company has provided you with a short description of its current situation and future plans. As a network designer, it is your task to identify the customer requirements that allow you to provide the most effective solution.

Company Facts

Widget Corporation, a leading architectural firm, headquartered in Toronto, Canada and offices around the world. Demand for the company’s products is constantly increasing; therefore, the company must tighten the integration of its customers and partners into its information infrastructure.

The company employs approximately 300 people across 10 sites. These sites are located globally and vary in size from a single part-time person working from a small office/home office (SOHO) to 150 regular office staff. The company’s headquarters consists of a building that contains approximately 150 employees. The headquarters also houses four major departments—Design, Human Resources, Marketing, and Sales.

The company has one international office (Canada) and many remote offices in each country where it is present. All large remote offices (those that have more than five employees) within each country are permanently connected to the international office, while smaller offices (those with fewer than five employees) are connected on-demand via integrated services digital network (ISDN). Each international office provides connectivity to the headquarters for all sites within that country.

Most of the time, the employees use universal software that converts all the company’s business workflows and runs on a mainframe. The e-mail server runs on a separate platform.

Current Situation

Widgets WAN is a typical hierarchical, three-tier aggregation network that uses serial lines. The links vary from low bandwidth (64 kbps to 128 kbps) between the large remote offices and the international office to higher bandwidth (up to 2 Mbps) between the international offices and the headquarters. All remote locations that have more than five employees are layer 2 switched, while smaller locations use Ethernet hubs.

The current network does not provide any redundancy or backup strategy. Therefore, in the event of link or network equipment failure, the employees cannot perform their daily work; this results in lower productivity.

Internet connectivity with the maximum throughput of 1 Mbps is provided via a central firewall that is located next to the mainframe.
All internal servers (e-commerce, CAD, e-mail, and so on) are located at the headquarters. Usually (approximately 85% of the time), architects, engineers, and employees are accessing these servers; the remainder of the traffic is from the Internet. Architects and engineers use CAD software and computers to design and redesign new and current buildings.

The current infrastructure contains three 6500 Catalyst switches connected using layer 2 links. Building access switches, WAN routers, Internet firewalls, the mainframe, and Windows servers all connect to 6,500 switches. Some fast Ethernet hubs are used in the network. Currently, no redundancy is implemented in the LAN.

Architects, engineers and users repeatedly report low response times and the IT manager mentions that they experience sporadic network outages several times during the day. Furthermore, the average WAN utilization between the headquarters and the international offices is approximately 40% and rarely exceeds 90%. The WAN utilization between international offices and the remote offices is even lower and does not seem to be the issue. The administrators are concerned about this problem and believe that it must be resolved soon.

The network is IP-based and uses EIGRP as the routing protocol. One Class C network from the range 192.168.x.x is allocated to each LAN and WAN link. In locations where more than 252 IP addresses are required, an additional Class C network is added. Route summarization is not implemented on any router. Connections to small remote offices with ISDN connections are implemented with static routes that are redistributed into the routing protocol at the international offices.

The data traffic is predominantly CAD files, HTTP, and e-mail because the company has implemented an intranet. In addition, the company has entered into a partnership to design a new Corporate Headquarters building for an American Software company that will require it to send CAD files of the new building electronically to their new American client. These CAD files must be secure and free from competitors hacking them.

Plans and Requirements

The company urgently needs to resolve the low response time issue and is open to any potential solution.

The following are things that Widget Corporation would like to accomplish with its network.

To minimize investment costs, the company would like to include redundancy while retaining the existing equipment if possible. Redundancy should be implemented in the headquarters’ LAN and on all WAN links. The company is aware of potential business risks that periodic network outages might cause during the solution implementation.
The company would like to optimize its IP addressing because it understands the disadvantages of its network’s current IP addressing scheme.
The company would like a scalable and manageable solution that would allow for expansion to new markets by simply adding new remote locations to the system.
The company would like to separate the four departments in the headquarters campus and possibly deploy security policies among them in the future.
The company wants to go to VoIP for its phone service and to better utilize its network. However, it is not sure if its existing network could handle the voice traffic or what equipment upgrades it would need.
The company wants to offer extranet functionality to its new American client that is fast and secure. It’s considering various connections options for its American client but is not sure which solution would be best and cost efficient. The company wants to provide secure and invulnerable access to its external servers, which should be separated from the internal servers. The internal mainframe should securely upland and download the data from the external server. This solution must be universal, regardless of what connectivity option the parties choose. They want you to determine if using the Internet and a Site-to-Site IPSec VPN to connect to their new American client is a workable solution.
The company has remote users who travel that must be able to attach remotely to the corporate headquarters.
The company wants to implement SNMP to monitor network behavior and particular implement syslog for logging computer and network device messages.
The company wants to redesign it system and data backup policy to provide increased data redundancy and reduce downtime from a system failure.

Exercise: Propose Your Network Redesign

The following sections are intended to guide you through this customer’s network redesign.

Campus Redesign
Propose a campus redesign that solves the current problems reported by the architects, engineers and users. Consider redundancy when redesigning the LAN. Write an overview of your redesign and articulate why you selected that solution. Use the Internet and any other resources to help with this redesign. Cite your sources in a reference page.
WAN Backup Design
Propose a WAN backup design to improve network reliability. Write an overview of your design and articulate why you selected that solution.

IP Address Redesign
Propose an IP addressing redesign that optimizes IP addressing and IP routing
(Including the use of IP address summarization). Write an overview of your redesign and articulate why you selected that solution.

Routing Campus Redesign
If the existing routing protocol does not fulfill all the requirements, propose a new one to meet the customer’s needs. If a new routing protocol is not required, outline any modifications that are required for the existing routing protocol. Write an overview of your redesign and articulate why you selected that solution.
American Client WAN Connection Design
Propose a WAN design that will enable secure access to the internal servers for Widget Corporation and its new American customer. This connection must allow for the secure and timely transfer of the large CAD files that need to be transferred back and forth. You must consider using the Internet and a Site-to-Site IPSec VPN, but if you choose to go with a different solution you must justify your choice and explain why the Site-to-Site IPSec VPN would not work.

Remote Users
Propose a solution for allowing remote users to reliably and securely connect to the corporate network while on the road.

Monitoring the Network
Explain how using syslog would be capable of logging all computer and network device generated messages and why having this information would be beneficial.
Group Project Report

The body of the report for this project must be a minimum of five pages in length, but can be as long as you wish to make it. All seven elements listed previously must be included in the body of the report. The paper is to contain a title page, table of contents, and reference page, none of which are part of the five pages minimum required for the body of the report.

Even if your group decides not to go with a Site-to-Site IPSec VPN as the means of connecting to the new American client for Widget Corporation, include the commands one could use to setup such a connection (refer to the lab from Week 5). You must also include the commands one would use to setup syslog on a network (refer to the lab from Week 6).

There needs to be a section in the report where it clearly indicates the student’s name, the hours that student spent on the project, and exactly what it is they did. It is not to contain a generic research as what a student spent time working on. It must indicate how many hours they spent on research, what exactly they researched and what they did with the research they gathered as well as any other activities they engaged in. This section is also not part of the body of the report that has to be a minimum of five pages in length.

If your suggested solution requires the purchase of any new equipment on the part of Widget Corporation, then a cost breakdown must be included that indicates how much this new equipment will cost. While all costs will be approximations, whatever costs you find from researching equipment will suffice.

The report is to use ADA format. The report is due at the end of the seventh week (Week 7).

If you have any questions, post or e-mail them to your instructor.

Provide 4 examples of deliberate threats and explain how they work. (~250 Words) • Insert your answer here and remove this comment. • Question 4: Define ‘asymmetric encryption’ from an I.S. perspective. Discuss the relationship between encryption, certificate authorities and digital certificates. (~250 Words) • Insert your answer here and remove this comment. Reference List: (DO NOT MOVE THIS LIST TO THE END OF THE ASSIGNMENT)———–ALL REFERENCES MUST BE AFTER YEAR 2010 List full references used (only) in alphabetical order by Author Surname. Please read ‘Assignment Details’ document to find the explanation of the sources that can be used. Failure to use the correct sources or reference them correctly will result in your answers not being marked. Assignment – Part B A case study analysis using Toulmin’s Model of Argument (~600 WORDS) Use the following Table provided for your answers as instructed. 1. You must use the case study provided in the Assignment Details Document. 2. You must analyse every sentence individually in the case study to establish whether it is a Toulmin element and each identified sentence should be individually included in the table below. 3. Not all sentences in the case study will be used in the table below 4. Sentences must be copied from case study and pasted into the appropriate Toulmin element section. You cannot abbreviate or paraphrase the sentences. Abbreviated or paraphrased sentences will not be marked. 5. Sentences can only be used in one element section of the Toulmin table. Part B of the assignment requires you to apply Toulmin’s Argument Model to analyse a case study to determine the validity or otherwise of the case study’s claim, again reference any additional information sources that you may use. You MUST use these instructions to complete the ‘Your Opinion’ section of Part B: Toapplythemodeltotestthevalidity/strengthofaCLAIMthereadermustexamineeach sentenceinthe article and categorise them as a Toulmin element or as an unnecessary extra e.g.‘opinion’,‘hearsay’,‘definitions’etc.Onceallsentenceshavebeencategorisedthenthe elements should be examined in sequence. 1. What is the CLAIM? 2. Is there any EVIDENCE to support the CLAIM? If so how much and how does it affect the strength of the CLAIM. 3. Is there a WARRANT (Explicit or Implicit)? Explicit WARRANTS are often stronger because the author can direct the reader to accept the CLAIM. Implicit WARRANTS leave the reader’s opinion open to interpretation and this may go against the author’s intended purpose. 4. Is there BACKING? If so how much? If so how much and how does it affect the strength of the CLAIM. 5. Is there a REBUTTAL? The quantity and scope of the REBUTTAL may reduce the strength of the CLAIM and thus dissuade the reader’s acceptance of the CLAIM. 6. Is there a QUALIFIER? If so, to what extent does it reduce the scope of the CLAIM because this will impact on the strength of the CLAIM? 7. Your Opinion – this is a personal perception based on your interpretation of the article. The presence, quality and quantity of the different Toulmin elements must be applied to make this critical assessment. You must discuss whether you agree or disagree with the claim based on the stronger argument.

Brief review of the purpose of the QHSR and your assessment as to its potential value for the county as it rewrites old plans and develops new ones.

After reading the QHSR, you will draft a policy statement for it. Note that a policy statement is intended to reflect the evaluation of a policy’s relevance or applicability for specific usage. In this case, you will craft a policy statement revealing your evaluation of the QHSR and its value for guiding the county in preparing emergency response plans. Your policy statement will serve to educate members of your county’s EM team and also provide a means for you to offer specific recommendations relating to those portions of the QHSR that you consider most meritorious for the county’s consideration.

In a 5–7 page policy statement, you will do the following:

  • Provide a brief review of the purpose of the QHSR and your assessment as to its potential value for the county as it rewrites old plans and develops new ones.
    • As you have a page limitation, this assessment should not exceed one full page.
  • Consider and capture, in your own words, a definition and the usefulness of various terms in the QHSR, including homeland security, preparedness, and homeland security enterprise. Add other terms as you deem necessary.
    • Tie these terms to other strategies, frameworks, policies with which you are familiar, or which you studied in this course.
    • The National Response Framework (NRF) and National Incident Management System (NIMS) are two strategic documents that you might use.
  • Select two of the five missions—and each one’s listed goals—that are outlined in the QHSR that you will advise your county to begin with, aiding the team members to become educated about the strategic framework and its many elements and making connections from strategy to local community operational use. In choosing which missions you select, you might contemplate some of the following components:
    • Mission 1: Preventing Terrorism and Enhancing Security
      • This mission is very expansive, as is each subordinate goal
      • Think about whether terrorism is a truly likely threat—of course terrorism can occur everywhere, but limited resources compel communities to allocate these judiciously with maximum benefit for least cost
      • Think about the likelihood of weapons of mass destruction, or chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear (CBRN) capabilities being used in your county
    • Mission 2: Securing and Managing Our Borders
      • Consider whether your county is reasonably concerned with border issues
      • Does your county include ports (air, sea, rail, or land)?
      • What prevalence is there of transnational criminal activity?
    • Mission 3: Enforcing and Administering Our Immigration Laws
      • Is immigration a concern for your county or state? Could it be in the future?
      • Which population seems the greatest concern, if any?
    • Mission 4: Safeguarding and Securing Cyberspace
      • Cyber threats exist for all critical infrastructure and operations that support communities.
      • This may be especially critical if information technology is an industry in your region.
    • Mission 5: Ensuring Resilience to Disasters
      • If your county has any likely natural (or manmade or accidental) threats or vulnerabilities, this mission can readily be tied to the county’s needs and objectives
  • Choose your two missions and summarize each one and its goals briefly in your policy statement.
    • For each mission, make clear and direct connections to the missions and goals and the county’s needs, objectives or capabilities.
      • Needs could include threats, hazards, or vulnerabilities as you assess them.
      • You will not need to have first-person or source information to provide details related to the County—you may use your own critical analysis skills and determine what these might be (For example, flooding is unlikely if the county is primarily composed of drought-prone plains.)
  • Do not exceed seven pages for the body of your paper. Use your own words to make these summaries to the greatest extent possible—but if you lift any material directly from the QHSR, make certain to properly reference it. Do not make your product an opinion piece. While it is based on your perspectives, write affirmatively, using a professional and official tone and language. The words I, our, we, you, (and the like) should not appear anywhere.

Explain the importance of the article’s results in ordinary language.

Student will read three professional magazine or academic journal articles dealing with some aspect of Quality and write a 1 to 2 page review of each article.

Normally, the articles you select should not be more than 10 years old.  However, classic articles in the field or articles referenced in the textbook (see chapter endnotes) are also permitted, no matter how old.

The reviews are to be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font, single-spaced with a blank line between paragraphs, 1.25-inch left and right margins, and 1-inch top and bottom margins.

Use the article titles and the journal names as the titles of your reviews.  Attach a copy of the first page of the article at the end of each review. Do not staple the three reviews together.

The reviews are due in class (as “hard copy”) on Wednesday, November 18th.

The reviews should clearly and concisely explain the importance of the article’s results in ordinary language. You may express an opinion about the article, but this is not required.

The reviews will be graded on the following criteria:

CONTENT (what you wrote), 12 points,

ORGANIZATION (how you structured what you wrote), 9 points, and

MECHANICS (grammar, spelling, and punctuation), 9points.

Some journals available in the library include:

Quality Progress (highly recommended)

Quality Engineering Quality Assurance Quality & Reliability Engineering International Journal of Quality & Reliability Management International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management

In addition, there are several journals that address specific industries, such as health care, education, and manufacturing.

You should use professional magazines or academic journals, but if there is an exceptional newspaper article on quality, that will be acceptable. However, only one newspaper article will be permitted.

I plan to do a short demonstration in class on how to find articles online at the Library.

Discuss “For Carol your tutor only”.

In a paper (1,500-1,750 words), develop an HR strategy for a current or prospective company. Detail the implementation plan for your specific HR strategy. Incorporate concepts learned throughout this course.

Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. An abstract is not required.

This assignment uses a grading rubric. Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment.

You are required to submit this assignment to Turnitin. Please refer to the directions in the Student Success Center.
