“What roles can nursing assume to address the increasing demand for safe, high-quality, and effective health care services?”.

As health care delivery in the United States continues to evolve, either through mandates, improved technologies and training, or other drivers, nurses remain at the forefront in facilitating the success of new initiatives. In 2010, the Institute of Medicine formed a committee of experts to address the following question: “What roles can nursing assume to address the increasing demand for safe, high-quality, and effective health care services?” In the final report of the committee, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, the authors stated:

This report offers recommendations that collectively serve as a blueprint to (1) ensure that nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and training, (2) improve nursing education, (3) provide opportunities for nurses to assume leadership positions and to serve as full partners in health care redesign and improvement efforts, and (4) improve data collection for workforce planning and policy making. (p. 10)

For this Discussion, you will focus on the research recommendations presented by the committee concerning the role of nurses as leaders. The committee members believe that answers to these research questions are needed to advance the profession of nursing and to further expand their role in health care reform and improvement.

To prepare:

  • Review Chapter 7 in The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health report provided in the Learning Resources. Focus on the information in Box 7.3, “Research Priorities for Transforming Nursing Leadership.”
  • Select one of the research priorities listed in Box 7.3 that is of particular interest to you and applicable to your career interests. Consider the benefits and challenges of researching and addressing this priority in nursing.
  • Using the Walden library, identify two to three current articles that address your selected research priority. Consider the current state of research efforts on this priority.
  • Reflect on how the research findings for your area of priority impact nurses as leaders in organizations and health care reform. Why is research on this priority important?

Post by Day 3 a description of the priority you selected and the benefits and challenges of further researching this area. Provide an overview of the articles you found (using appropriate APA citations) relating to this priority, and highlight any key findings. Explain how continued research in this area could strengthen the ability of nurses to lead in both individual organizations and as advocates of health care reform.

Explain IT applications for increasing internal coordination and efficiency.

Questions 1 (Information Technology):  Today, all the various computer-based systems have begun to merge into an overall IT system that add strategic value by enabling close coordination internally and externally.  (a) Explain IT applications for increasing internal coordination and efficiency.  (b) Explain IT application for strengthening coordination with external parties.  (c) Advanced IT is having a significant impact on organization design, and some experts suggest that it will eventually replace traditional hierarchy as a primary means of coordination and control. Explain

Questions 2 (Decision-Making Processes):  (a) Explain the Rational Approach to individual decision making.  On the other hand, many organizational decisions involve several managers, while problem identification and problem solution involve many departments, multiple view-points, and other organizations, which are beyond the scope of an individual manager.  There are four primary types of organizational decision models.  (b) Explain the management science model, Carnegie model, and incremental decision model.  (c) The Garbage Can Modeldeals with the pattern of multiple decisions.  Compare this model with three other models in b.

Questions 3 (Conflict, Power, and Politics):    Intergroup conflict requires three ingredients: group identification, observable group differences, and frustration.  (a) Explain organizational characteristics generating conflict as sources of intergroup conflict.  (b) When conflict is low, a manager can use the rational model of organization; when conflict is high, the political model describes the way organizations operate.  Explain.  (c) Managers consciously apply a variety of techniques to overcome conflict between departments or groups in the organization.  Introduce tactics for enhancing collaboration.

Questions 4 (General Application of Organization Theory):  you are going to start a new small business with your own money of One Hundred Million US Dollars (US$100,000,000) in cash.  How would you apply Organization Theories for your new business?  You must include major external and internal factors considered in the System’s Approach to Management with a full evaluation.

Question 5 (Theoretical Background):  What are the differences and similarities of the application of organization theory between the U.S. Federal Government and the

Estimate the annual and quarterly cost of issuing preferred stock (use the cost of preferred stock formula studied in class).

Suppose the stock price is $25, there are 1.5 million shares of stock, the firm has $13.5 million of preferred stock, and $62 million of debt. Estimate
The total value
The WACC weights.
Write the WACC formula with the corresponding weights.
Estimate the cost of debt. Assume that you are issuing a 10 yr, 6% semiannual bond that sells for $1,015.72. (Use the excel formula)
Illustrate the before-tax cost of debt by showing the corresponding time line.
If the tax rate is 40%, what is the after-tax cost of debt?
What role do flotation costs play in the cost of debt? Explain.
Estimate the annual and quarterly cost of issuing preferred stock (use the cost of preferred stock formula studied in class). Assume the price of preferred stock is $104.35, 4% dividend,
$100 par (face) value and flotation costs (F) of 5%.
Draw the time line of preferred stock. Remember that dividends are paid quarterly.
Make sure your result is correct by estimating the cost of issuing preferred stock using the corresponding excel formula.
Use the CAPM Cost of Equity model to determine the cost of issuing common stock. Assume that the risk free rate is 3.2%, the market risk premium is 4% and the estimate of beta is 0.98.
Re write the WACC formula, substituting the values you have found in all the previous questions.
What is the hurdle rate? What does it mean? Explain.
Define an agency relationship.
If you are the only employee, and only your money is invested in the business, would any agency problems exist? Explain.
Would hiring additional people create agency problems? Explain.
Define the concept of Corporate Governance.
Suppose the government is running a budget deficit (previously the budget was balanced). Explain in detail what happens in the following markets:
Loanable Funds Market (draw a diagram)
Net Capital Outflow (draw a diagram)
Foreign-Currency Exchange (draw a diagram)
US Net exports
The January 29, 2014 nominal exchange rate for the following currencies were as follows:

Canadian Dollar 1.12
Euro 0.73
Japanese yen 102.34
Mexican Peso 13.41

Find the indirect quotation for December 4, 2015 and determine whether the currencies have appreciated or depreciated, and by how much.

For each currency, explain what is happening in the Foreign-Currency exchange market and in the trade balance between the US and each of these countries.

A Big Mac costs $3.50 in U.S., 60 pesos in Mexico. The nominal exchange rate is e = 17.05 pesos per $USD. Compute the real exchange rate.

Does the real exchange rate follows the “law of one price”? (i.e. follows the Purchasing Power Parity condition?). If it does not, what would be exchange rate according to the PPP condition? Explain.
If the CPI inflation rate is 12% in Mexico and 2% in the US, what will happen to the exchange rate? Explain.

What are the elements of embezzlement present in this fact pattern.

Johnny, the CEO of Plastic Spoon Inc., is in a bit of a bind. His daughter was kidnapped. The kidnappers are demanding a hefty ransom. Unfortunately for Johnny, he cannot afford the ransom. So, Johnny withdraws the ransom money from Plastic Spoon’s account, and he pays the kidnappers. After returning with his daughter, the directors of the corporation notice the missing funds. The directors report the loss to the police. The directors suspect that Johnny misappropriated the funds, and they tell the police about their suspicions. The police search Johnny’s home without a warrant. They find a letter Johnny was writing that confirms that Johnny took the money for the corporation to pay the kidnappers. The police arrest Johnny, and he is charged with theft. Johnny is charged with embezzlement.

The elements of embezzlement in this state are: The intentional taking of money or property by a CEO or other top official in a corporation without consent.

Are the elements of embezzlement present in this fact pattern?
What affirmative defenses can Johnny raise?
Can Johnny get the letter seized by the police suppressed? Why?

Discuss the origins of this institute, its importance to Native artists and how this institute is viewed in American culture.

Research Subject Projects

#1:
Research the NMAI in both Washington and New York.  Discuss the origins of this institute, its importance to Native artists and how this institute is viewed in American culture.  You will need to discuss the importance of the architecture of the structure as well.

#2:
Select two different potters.  Discuss their styles and what makes their work different.  You are not limited to the Southwest and may want to investigate pottery in the Midwest.  You will need to address contemporary and traditional styles as well as the influence of gender upon this tradition.

#3:
Review the work of Ernie Paniccioli.  He is a very powerful Native artist and one that has many avenues to investigate for this project.  You will want to discuss the “legacy” of his work.  How is he viewed in the American art world?  What does Mr. Paniccioli have to say about his own work?  What styles does he work within and why/why not has he selected this/these styles?  His strong web presence should allow for multiple avenues of research.

#4:
Select, at least, two different Native theatre performing ensembles.  Discuss their history, legacy and bodies of work that they have produced.  To whom to do these ensembles normally perform?  How are they received by the American public?  Do they have international attention?  Why/why not?  Who are, if any, major actors to come from these ensembles?  You may want to make contact with the directors/producers/performers from these different ensembles if possible.

#5:
Review two (2) works of Native literature written by a Native and non-Native author.  What views of Native history, culture, art are expressed within these texts?  Are the works accurate or do they contain inaccuracies?  Where, how and why?  How have these works been received by the Native and non-Native communities?  You are not limited to a genre (mystery/thriller, comedy, biography, autobiography, poetry) but the works do have to be composed by a Native  and non-Native author.  You will want to look at both traditional and contemporary works of literature before you make a final decision on a text.

#6:
Compare/contrast two films: one by a Native film maker/producer and the other about Native culture from a non-Native film maker/producer.  How do these films address Native culture?  How did they balance their subject matter (documentary, fiction, action) along with a perspective of Native culture?  What are the positive/negative views of Native culture within the films?  What was/is the growth and distribution of the films?  Was/is their international attention to these films?

#7:
Select a local Native cultural center or museum.  Review this establishment and how it offers a location to feature Native artists.  What kinds of art are historically exhibited within this location?  How many showings are presented within a typical year at this location?  Is the Director/Curator Native or non-Native?  Does this make a difference?  How has the general public come to understand this establishment?

#8:
Develop an overview of modern urban Native art (graffiti, skateboard/deck art, t-shirts/designs, etc).  Is there a general location where these styles are viewed?  Are there specific tribes that engage in these art forms?  How do these styles relate to both an elder and younger Native population?  To whom are these materials marketed?  Is there a large global/non-Native venue open to these artistic forms?  What marketing strategies have been used to sell these products?
