Assignment 1: Demand Estimation

Due Week 3 and worth 200 points

Imagine that you work for the maker of a leading brand of low-calorie, frozen microwavable food that estimates the following demand equation for its product using data from 26 supermarkets around the country for the month of April.

For a refresher on independent and dependent variables, please go to Sophia’s Website and review the Independent and Dependent Variables tutorial, located at http://www.sophia.org/tutorials/independent-and-dependent-variables–3.

Option 1

Note: The following is a regression equation. Standard errors are in parentheses for the demand for widgets.

QD = – 5200 – 42P + 20PX + 5.2I + 0.20A + 0.25M

(2.002) (17.5) (6.2) (2.5) (0.09) (0.21)

R2 = 0.55 n = 26 F = 4.88

Your supervisor has asked you to compute the elasticities for each independent variable. Assume the following values for the independent variables:

Q = Quantity demanded of 3-pack units

P (in cents) = Price of the product = 500 cents per 3-pack unit

PX (in cents) = Price of leading competitor’s product = 600 cents per 3-pack unit

I (in dollars) = Per capita income of the standard metropolitan statistical area

(SMSA) in which the supermarkets are located = $5,500

A (in dollars) = Monthly advertising expenditures = $10,000

M = Number of microwave ovens sold in the SMSA in which the

supermarkets are located = 5,000

Option 2

Note: The following is a regression equation. Standard errors are in parentheses for the demand for widgets.

QD = -2,000 – 100P + 15A + 25PX + 10I

(5,234) (2.29) (525) (1.75) (1.5)

R2 = 0.85 n = 120 F = 35.25

Your supervisor has asked you to compute the elasticities for each independent variable. Assume the following values for the independent variables:

Q = Quantity demanded of 3-pack units

P (in cents) = Price of the product = 200 cents per 3-pack unit

PX (in cents) = Price of leading competitor’s product = 300 cents per 3-pack unit

I (in dollars) = Per capita income of the standard metropolitan statistical area

(SMSA) in which the supermarkets are located = $5,000

A (in dollars) = Monthly advertising expenditures = $640

Write a four to six (4-6) page paper in which you:

  1. Compute the elasticities for each independent variable. Note: Write down all of your calculations.
  2. Determine the implications for each of the computed elasticities for the business in terms of short-term and long-term pricing strategies. Provide a rationale in which you cite your results.
  3. Recommend whether you believe that this firm should or should not cut its price to increase its market share. Provide support for your recommendation.
  4. Assume that all the factors affecting demand in this model remain the same, but that the price has changed. Further assume that the price changes are 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 cents.
    1. Plot the demand curve for the firm.
    2. Plot the corresponding supply curve on the same graph using the following MC / supply function Q = -7909.89 + 79.1P with the same prices.
    3. Determine the equilibrium price and quantity.
    4. Outline the significant factors that could cause changes in supply and demand for the low-calorie, frozen microwavable food. Determine the primary manner in which both the short-term and the long-term changes in market conditions could impact the demand for, and the supply, of the product.
  5. Indicate the crucial factors that could cause rightward shifts and leftward shifts of the demand and supply curves for the low-calorie, frozen microwavable food.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia does not qualify as an academic resource.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Analyze how production and cost functions in the short run and long run affect the strategy of individual firms.
  • Apply the concepts of supply and demand to determine the impact of changes in market conditions in the short run and long run, and the economic impact on a company’s operations.

MEMORANDUM

BANKS Industries

TO: BANKS Senior Management

FROM: HR Department

SUBJECT: Employee Health and Safety

The increasingly diverse nature of the workplace, along with the rapid global

expansion, presents some significant challenges to us. Aside from the challenges of communication and accommodating a variety of human differences, one of the most significant variables when doing business on a global level is employee health and safety. This is mostly due to a lack of clear international standards and the subsequent variation between national laws and employee protection.

Employee health and safety are very important to us. Although some companies do not emphasize employee health and safety, others, such as DuPont, a US chemical company, have made employee health and safety a high priority. To be successful in managing the health and safety of its employees, DuPont has come up with a safety philosophy that includes specific safety principles. We believe these are principles we can learn from and use in the way we do business and protect employees, regardless of their location.

Keep in mind that one of the biggest issues in dealing with employee health and safety is whether an employee is willing to report an unsafe condition or an incident. This can often be culturally bound. For example, employees who come from areas where they do not have many legal rights in the workplace may not be aware of their right to report these issues.

In other cases, culture tends to limit people from disclosing information about themselves or their health, which could result in unreported claims. These are especially important factors to consider when it comes to protecting our diverse workforce.

  • Analyze inter- and intracultural differences in work relationships, values, and behaviors to maximize individual and organizational performance.
  • Create work redesign approaches to improve performance under differing assumptions of employee skill and education level, compensation and reward systems, and cultural expectations.
  • Evaluate workforce and labor market profile and organizational needs to focus change efforts on personnel selection, compensation, training, or work design/technical systems.
  • Communicate the ethical implications of recommendations to change human resource and/or work flow systems given the presence of multiple cultural subgroups.

Demonstrated an understanding of the given topic material and explained the balance between principles of the Constitution and the ones given in the articles.

Is justice just? Sometimes, what is legal is not always perceived by the public as “justice.” Many laws define criminal acts and the punishment that will be meted out in the event of a criminal offense. However, there sometimes seems to be a disconnect between what actions are considered criminal in nature and who gets charged for it. Sometimes, people committing the same criminal acts receive different treatments even though they are tried under the same courts of law.

Based on the premise that people committing the same criminal acts receive different treatments, read the articles below and answer the questions that follow.

Explain how Holland’s ideas might inform your understanding of the structure of organizations and how that may support your ability to lead or manage effectively.

Complexity theory, the field of study of complex systems, is a relatively recent theory. It is a broad theory encompassing nine research traditions—an aggregation of principles, concepts, theories, and disciplines. The nine interrelated complexity research traditions include: systems thinking, theoretical biology, nonlinear dynamical systems, graph theory, phase transitions, Turing’s morphogenetic model, synergetics, far-from-equilibrium thermodynamics, and complex adaptive systems.

Holland (1995) suggested that seven basics (four properties and three mechanisms) are common to all complex systems. See Brownlee (2007), Smith and Bedau (2000), and Holland’s TED Talk for details on these complex systems basics to respond to in this week’s Discussion.

To prepare for this Discussion, review the resources.

Post your perspective on Holland’s properties and mechanisms of complex adaptive systems.

Next, explain what is useful and/or problematic in his approach.

Finally, explain how Holland’s ideas might inform your understanding of the structure of organizations and how that may support your ability to lead or manage effectively.

Analyze the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and conclude whether or not these regulations overall offer adequate protection of the collective buying power of the American people.

Imagine that you are a contracts officer for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and that your supervisor has tasked you with the procurement of a new software system for processing tax returns.

Use the Internet to research one (1) scandal related to government procurement that has occurred within the past four (4) years.

Write a two to three (2-3) page paper in which you:

  1. Analyze the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), and conclude whether or not these regulations overall offer adequate protection of the collective buying power of the American people. Prepare an argument in support of your position.
  2. Based on the scandal that you have researched, determine whether or not the executive branch is the proper branch to effectuate change that would provide checks and balances for the purchase of good and services for the United States government. Provide a rationale for your answer.
  3. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality academic resources.
  4. Format your assignment according to the following formatting requirements:

Describe how the conflict style inventory was developed.

Conflicts

In this assignment, you will study the methods used by leaders to resolve different types of conflicts.

Question 1

Using the Online Library or the Internet, research about the following:

  • Types of conflicts
  • Levels of conflicts
  • Conflict handling modes

Consider the statement “conflict can be both good and bad.” Reflect on this statement and describe a time when you witnessed or experienced conflict in your personal or professional life.

Based on your research and experience, answer the following questions:

  • What are the four basic types of conflict? Describe them.
  • Which type of conflict did you witness or experience?
  • What are the five levels of conflict? Describe them. What was the level of conflict in your situation?
  • Which of the five conflict-handling modes was utilized?
  • What are the three conflict negotiation models? What are the goals and indicators of success of each? Were any of these models used to resolve the conflict you witnessed or experienced?
  • Do you agree or disagree that “conflict can be both good and bad”? Give reasons and explain whether the conflict you witnessed was good or bad.
  • Provide an additional example of both good and bad conflict in a healthcare setting.

Question 2

Using the Online Library or the Internet, research about the following:

  • Thomas-Kilmann conflict mode instrument (TKI)
  • Kraybill conflict style inventory (KCSI)

Now, choose one of these conflict style inventories and based on your understanding of the model, complete the following tasks:

  • Describe your chosen conflict style inventory.
  • Describe how the conflict style inventory was developed.
  • Explain the pros and cons of the inventory.

Identify and briefly describe an organization (e.g., school, workplace) in which violence might be a chronic issue in that country or community.

Researchers who investigate the causes of specific health problems look at a wide range of influences on several different levels. For instance, if researchers were investigating obesity at the individual level, they could examine eating habits and frequency of sedentary activities like TV watching. If the health problems also are population wide, as obesity is, it is important from a public health standpoint to focus on community-level factors such as availability of healthy foods and recreational facilities.

Communities and organizations have personalities and can resist change in a manner similar to how individuals can become set in their ways. Have you ever been part of a group where the social norms created pressure to behave a certain way? One possible strategy for changing behaviors is to address a community or organization rather than individuals. For this you would use theories geared to groups rather than to individuals.

The article by Krug et al. in the Learning Resources discusses violence and health and explores how the causes of violence can be viewed at many different levels. Although violence is commonly thought of as happening between individuals, community-level factors may be adding to the problem:

“The third level explores the community context—i.e., schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods. Risk at this level may be affected by factors such as the existence of a local drug trade, the absence of social networks, and poverty. All these factors have been shown to be important in several types of violence” (Krug et al., 2002, p. 1085).

For this Discussion, consider community level factors that might contribute to injury-related public health problem that is present in a country or a community with these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a description of the injury-related public health problem you selected. Include incidence rates for this problem in the country or community you selected and a description of populations at risk for it. Then, explain which community-level factors might influence increased risk for injury in its population. Identify and briefly describe an organization (e.g., school, workplace) in which violence might be a chronic issue in that country or community

Consider the role of change agents (i.e., a person or group that indirectly or directly facilitates change) as you apply the Stage Theory of Organizational Change to the topic of violence.

Compare and contrast software tools for managing and analyzing qualitative data.

Software Tools for Qualitative Research

In RSCH 8301, you used NVivo software to assist with organizing and coding data you collected. However, you may be wondering if that is the only software package available to qualitative researchers and whether you even need to use a software package for your Dissertation.

Consider the Discussion topic for this week on organizing and tracking data as well as the Dissertation Rubric criteria on these topics.

To prepare for this Application:

  • Review this week’s required readings about computer programs available for qualitative research.
  • Investigate software packages other than NVivo that are available to qualitative researchers.
  • Select at least two software packages and compare them to NVivo.
  • Do you believe you will need to use a software package for your  project If so, would any of the three software tools you investigated for this assignment be appropriate? Why?

The assignment:

  • Craft a 3- page paper and 5 references in which you do the following:
    • Compare and contrast software tools for managing and analyzing qualitative data.
    • Conclude by stating whether you believe you will need to use a software package for your dproject and, if so, whether any of the three software tools analyzed in this assignment

Discuss the arguments against auteurs theory and provide examples to support your points.

Auteur theory in film suggests not only that a director is the primary author of a film, but also that the film must be analyzed within the context of the director’s other films. Directors create certain expectations with their films much in the same way authors create certain expectations with their writing. Are there directors whose work you always recognize when you see it? What qualities bind their works together?

Write (due Thursday, Day 3)

As you construct your initial post, focus on the importance of auteur theory in film analysis and interpretation.

  • Name a director who you would consider an auteur and explain your reasoning.
  • Discuss the arguments against auteur theory and provide examples to support your points.
  • Examine how the auteur theory influences audiences and critics, using examples from film criticism, film marketing campaigns, and your own personal experience.

Include the name of the director you identified in the “Subject” line of your discussion. Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly sources, and properly cite any references.
