Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.

Workflow analysis aims to determine workflow patterns that maximize the effective use of resources and minimize activities that do not add value. There are a variety of tools that can be used to analyze the workflow of processes and clarify potential avenues for eliminating waste. Flowcharts are a basic and commonly used workflow analysis method that can help highlight areas in need of streamlining.

In this Assignment, you select a common event that occurs regularly in your organization and create a flowchart representing the workflow. You analyze the process you have diagrammed and propose changes for improvement.

To prepare:

  • Identify a common, simple event that frequently occurs in your organization that you would like to evaluate.
  • Consider how you would design a flowchart to represent the current workflow.
  • Consider what metrics you would use to determine the effectiveness of the current workflow and identify areas of waste.

To complete:

Write a 3- to 5-page paper which includes the following:

  • Create a simple flowchart of the activity you selected. (Review the Sample Workflow of Answering a Telephone in an Office document found in this week’s Learning Resources for an example.)
  • Next, in your paper:
    • Explain the process you have diagrammed.
    • For each step or decision point in the process, identify the following:
      • Who does this step? (It can be several people.)
      • What technology is used?
      • What policies and rules are involved in determining how, when, why, or where the step is executed?
      • What information is needed for the execution of this step?
    • Describe the metric that is currently used to measure the soundness of the workflow. Is it effective?
    • Describe any areas where improvements could occur and propose changes that could bring about these improvements in the workflow.
    • Summarize why it is important to be aware of the flow of an activity.
  • Remember to include a cover page, introduction, and summary for your paper.

Describe the actors and organizations in the policy network related to your chosen issue.

olicy networks are a prevalent feature of democratic governance. The policy network approach requires collaboration among interested parties in order to make progress in forming public policy. The various actors in a policy network organize, form coalitions, communicate, coordinate, and compete around policy issues of interest to them. Policy networks are organic entities that may change over time. Depending on the policy issue, today’s allies in a policy network may be tomorrow’s enemies. For example, conservative and libertarian groups may work together to defeat a new tax proposal but may quickly part ways over the legalization of medical marijuana. The operation of policy networks is shaped by the political, social, and economic climate in which they operate.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review the articles “Analyzing and Managing Policy Processes in Complex Networks: A Theoretical Examination of the Concept Policy Network and Its Problems” in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the definitions of policy network presented and the evolving structures and processes associated with the term policy network.
  • Review Chapter 1 of “The Network Society from Knowledge to Policy” in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider the effect of networks on society.
  • Review the article “The Development of Policy Network Analyses: From Modest Origins to Overarching Frameworks” in this week’s Learning Resources. Consider whether basic concepts of democratic governance play a role in policy networks.
  • Review the article “Using the Advocacy Coalition Framework to Understand Freight Transportation Policy Change” in this week’s Learning Resources. Think about how the advocacy coalition framework is used to advance policy change.
  • Reflect on the elements of the policy network approach present in the advocacy coalition framework.
  • Recall the issue you selected for this week’s Discussion and think about which actors and organizations might be part of the policy network related to the issue.
  • Pay particular attention to how actors in a policy network might communicate and coordinate.
  • Consider how democratic governance might influence the operation of policy networks.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Briefly describe the issue you selected.
  • Describe the actors and organizations in the policy network related to your chosen issue.
  • Explain how democratic governance influences the operation of policy networks, specifically the one(s) related to your issue. Next, explain how policy networks influence democratic governance.
  • Based on your analysis, draw conclusions and share insights about the relationship between democratic governance and policy networks.

Assignment 2: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator

Over the years, trait theory has been increasingly used by corporations in hiring and in career counseling. Research has shown that certain combinations of personality traits fit well with different career paths. Thus, personality trait tests for specific jobs can be predictive of both success and satisfaction. Understanding your own personality-trait combinations can give you great insight into your own strengths and weaknesses. With this understanding, you can work to grow your strengths and minimize your weaknesses.

In this assignment, you will explore your personality using a personality test and then analyze the results.

Part 1

First, explore your personality preferences by completing Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MTBI). The full version of the test can only be administered by a trained professional; however, there are many online informal versions of the test which you can find on the Internet. You can search for the test using any one of the following keywords:

  • Personality test + Myers-Briggs typology
  • Myers-Briggs test

Record your four-lettered personality type after completion of the test and use the Internet to interpret your personality type.

Part 2

In this part of the assignment, you will write a research paper that analyses your results. Do the following:

  • Mention your four-letter type and the URL of the Web site where you took the test.
  • Discuss whether this type accurately represents what you know about yourself. Examine the four spectrums and explain your answer thoroughly. Substantiate your agreement or disagreement with real-life behavioral examples.
  • Analyze what you consider the strengths and the weaknesses or challenges of this type. List three strengths and three weaknesses and provide a rationale for each.
  • Evaluate why this test could be a valuable tool for an employer.
  • Analyze how a clinician may use this test as a tool for promoting meaningful interventions in treatment.
  • Summarize what you have learned about yourself through this exercise.

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

By Wednesday, January 13, 2016, deliver your assignment to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.

20
Wrote in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrated ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources; displayed accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Evaluate the tools and/or practices you selected in terms of their strengths and limitations.

In this week’s Discussion, you analyzed leadership as a tool for implementing public policy. For this Assignment, you are asked to review a case study that presents a general challenge to implementing public policy. As a student of public policy, you should weigh which tools and practices may be most useful in addressing challenges related to the implementation of public policy. Before you begin the Assignment, think about which tools of democracy you might use as a policy maker in the implementation of public policy in general.

Policy makers may use a variety of means to help them implement public policy. Regulations, tax incentives, grants, and public-private partnerships are a few examples of tools and practices of democratic governance. Ideally, the tools selected for policy implementation are well suited for the task, but this is not always the case. Unfortunately, many public endeavors fail not because of bad policy but because of poor choice and implementation of tools and practices. The success or failure of public policy may depend greatly on the tools selected for implementation. Tools and practices that may be well suited for implementation in one policy area may lead to failure in another. Therefore, it is important that tools and practices are wisely chosen and appropriate for the policy area at hand.

To prepare for this Assignment:

  • Review the “Case Study: The Winds of Change” document (located in this week’s Learning Resources) and think about the challenges encountered in the scenario.
  • Select the tools and/or practices that you think might be effective in implementing the policy change presented in the case study.
  • Consider the strengths and limitations of the tools and practices you selected.
  • Reflect on whether tools and practices of democracy are effective in implementing public policy.

The Assignment (2–3 pages):

  • Briefly describe each of the tools and/or practices you selected for the Assignment.
  • Explain why you think each might be effective in implementing the policy change presented in the case study.
  • Evaluate the tools and/or practices you selected in terms of their strengths and limitations.
  • Based on your evaluation, draw at least one conclusion about the effectiveness of tools and/or practices of democracy in implementing public policy.

You have just attended a manager’s meeting about establishing self-directed, high-performing teams. The company is concerned because some of the managers are having success building self-directed, high-performing teams while others are not. A discussion occurred that identified the characteristics of the successful team building elements and compared them to those managers that have not been successful. This is a situation where those who are struggling need to learn from those who are doing well. The discussions included identifying what could be going wrong and what steps might be taken for success.

You have been asked to write a research report that summarizes the meeting and offers some recommendations that might be helpful to those managers who are struggling. Specifically, your report must include:

  • Identification of the difficulties the managers may be having in establishing self-directed, high-performing teams
  • Identification of the successful characteristic of establishing self-directed, high-performing teams
  • Recommendations for success
  • A designed plan that might help guide the struggling managers and improve negotiation and conflict resolution skills

Use the Library and Internet to research this topic.

Present your findings as a 5-7 pages (body of paper) formatted in APA style.

Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following:

  • Title page: Remember the running head and title in all capital letters.
  • Abstract: This is a summary of your paper, not an introduction. Begin writing in third-person voice.
  • Body: The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and abstract page, and it must be double-spaced between paragraphs. The typeface should be 12-pt. Times Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references. The deliverable length of the body of your paper for this assignment is 5-7 pages. In-text academic citations to support your decisions and analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged.
  • Reference page: References that align with your in-text academic sources are listed on the final page of your paper. The references must be in APA format using appropriate spacing, hang indention, italics, and upper- and lower-case usage as appropriate for the type of resource used. Remember, the reference page is not a bibliography, but it is a further listing of the abbreviated in-text citations used in the paper. Every referenced item must have a corresponding in-text citation.
