Due Week 4 and worth 350 points

Choose an industry you have not yet written about in this course, and one publicly traded corporation within that industry. Research the company on its own Website, the public filings on the Securities and Exchange Commission EDGAR database (http://www.sec.gov/edgar.shtml), in the University’s online databases, and any other sources you can find. The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Write an eight to ten (8-10) page paper in which you:

  1. Choose the two (2) segments of the general environment that would rank highest in their influence on the corporation you chose. Assess how these segments affect the corporation you chose and the industry in which it operates.
  2. Considering the five (5) forces of competition, choose the two (2) that you estimate are the most significant for the corporation you chose. Evaluate how well the company has addressed these two (2) forces in the recent past.
  3. With the same two (2) forces in mind, predict what the company might do to improve its ability to address these forces in the near future.
  4. Assess the external threats affecting this corporation and the opportunities available to the corporation. Give your opinions on how the corporation should deal with the most serious threat and the greatest opportunity. Justify your answer.
  5. Give your opinion on the corporation’s greatest strengths and most significant weaknesses. Choose the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to take maximum advantage of its strengths, and the strategy or tactic the corporation should select to fix its most significant weakness. Justify your choices.
  6. Determine the company’s resources, capabilities, and core competencies.
  7. Analyze the company’s value chain to determine where they can create value using the resources, capabilities, and core competencies discussed above.
  8. Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not quality as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required page

Other relevant recommendations or issues that you identified, with a brief analysis of why they are important.

This week you will continue to work on your Final Project, which is due in Week 7. By Day 7, you will submit a business memo, written to your Instructor, that explains how you plan to incorporate your learning from the week into your Final Project. This will not be a “perfect” synopsis at this point, but it should capture the main themes and important ideas from the week. Your memo should include the following:

  • Your preliminary summary of how you are planning to incorporate this week’s learning into your Final Project
  • Your ideas and recommendations for how your organization can mitigate the short-term and long-term issues that can arise when selecting and using data resources and systems
  • Brief descriptions of the types of data resources, data processing, and storage systems chosen
  • An explanation of how the organization might manage the potential implications of those selections, while taking advantage of the opportunities they afford to sustain the business or gain a competitive advantage
  • Other relevant recommendations or issues that you identified, with a brief analysis of why they are important

Note: If you are unable to find relevant information, you may want to look for similar information at /for other similar publically traded companies. You may find relevant information that will enable you to make appropriate inferences about your organization and make reasonable assumptions so you can proceed with your project.

If you have questions about how to apply what you are learning or how to find the most relevant information for your organization’s needs, please discuss your choice with your Instructor using the Contact the Instructor link in the classroom.

General Guidance on Assignment Length: Your Week 3 Assignment will typically be 1.5–3 pages (0.75–1 page(s) if single spaced), excluding a title page (not required for this Assignment) and references.

As a best practice for this course, as you engage and complete your weekly activities, you will capture notes on your learning for each week and add them to your Final Project Portfolio, which you will use to formulate your Final Project. By the time you turn in your Final Project in Week 7, your working Final Project Portfolio document will contain your notes on the resources you found relevant in each week, as well as your ideas for how your organization can improve its business information systems management with respect to each week’s main themes. You should also include your analyses of the implications of your recommendations, as well as reasons why your recommendations are important. You will update your Final Project Portfolio each week.

This week you are encouraged to begin setting up your presentation in PowerPoint. You should complete a title slide and 1–2 slides with your preliminary recommendations for your organization as they relate to this week’s learning.

Note: Neither your Final Project Portfolio nor your preliminary slides will be submitted for grading this week.

Explain why each of these is especially important in defining the era of the 1960s.

iscovery of a Time Capsule

Overview

When defining an era such as the 1960s, a lot of images come to mind: the march on Washington, psychedelic music, peace signs, the antiwar movement, the assassinations of prominent political leaders, and so on. In this Assignment, you will explain which of the events, people, and symbols best define the 1960s.

Assignment

It is the year 2325. You are a prominent archaeologist who has just been summoned to a dig site because your colleagues have made a unique discovery: a time capsule from the 1960s that was buried long ago. Very carefully, you and your colleagues unearth and open this time capsule. Inside the time capsule you find five items that define the era of the 1960s.

For this Assignment write a brief paper that covers the following:

  1. Describe each of the five items you have found.
  2. Explain why each of these is especially important in defining the era of the 1960s.
  3. Based upon these items you have found, conclude your paper with a solid paragraph that explains one major lesson that you have learned from the 1960s.

Hint: The objects you find in your time capsule do not necessarily have to be material items, but can also be events, trends, fads, etc. For example, your time capsule may contain assassinations, the Vietnam War, or the women’s movement. Also, feel free to be creative with the types of items that you find. For example, perhaps you have found a letter written by an antiwar protester to the government, or a song by famous 1960s musician, or perhaps a piece of artwork by a famous 1960s visual artist.

The total length of your paper should be 6 pages formatted in APA style. The first page is a title page. Page 6 is a reference page and ages 2 through 5 are text. You should have a total of four references, at least one of which should be outside of the course materials. Please use only academic resources. Also, remember to use Times New Roman 12-point font, set margins to one inch, and double space your paper.

Turnitin Analysis

A special feature is available to help you with reviewing your Unit 9 Final Project for plagiarism. When you submit your Assignment to the Unit 9 Dropbox, your Assignment will automatically be analyzed by the plagiarism detection tool, Turnitin. Soon after you submit your Assignment, you will be able to view the Turnitin Originality Report. Originality Reports provide a summary of matching or highly similar text found in a submitted paper. When an Originality Report is available for viewing, an icon will appear in the report column of the Assignment inbox. Originality Reports are only available in the inbox. For this reason, you will need to download the report prior to the grading of the Unit 9 Final Project. To do this, click on the print icon at the bottom of the Originality Report. This will prepare a readable, PDF version of the Originality Report that you can save to your computer.

Discuss in detail a problem at work, persuading and convincing the reader that it needs fixing.

In Assignments 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3, you will be building up a formal, researched justification report (one part at a time) that culminates in a recommendation to implement a particular product, service, or program in your place of employment. This recommended product, service, or program should resolve a problem that you identify in your workplace and should be directed to your employer (even if you do not actually plan to share it with your employer).

Use the basic outline below to draft Assignment 2. Organize your responses to each question under the following section headings:

  • Problem Statement (for Question 1)
  • Overview of Alternatives (for Question 2)
  • Criteria (for Question 3)
  • Methods (for Question 4)

Using the provided template, write Part 1 of a single-spaced report in which you:

  1. Discuss in detail a problem at work, persuading and convincing the reader that it needs fixing.
  2. Provide a detailed description of two (2) possible solutions (“alternatives”) that could be implemented to resolve the problem identified in Question 1.
  3. List and detail five (5) criteria that you will use to measure the worth of each alternative in Question 2. Note: The alternative that satisfies the most criteria to the highest degree will be the one you recommend later to your employer (in Assignment 2.3). Criteria are standards that the audience values and are therefore used to measure the worth of each alternative (common examples include cost, desirability, durability, efficiency, time it will take to implement, and practicality).
  4. Describe in detail how you will conduct the research needed to determine the best alternative to recommend to your employer. Note: This is a one to two (1-2) paragraph description of what research needs to be completed in order to evaluate the alternatives. This is not a detailed procedure for solving the problem.

Your assignment must:

  • Be typed, single spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, your name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Evaluate and discuss whether the firm could benefit by using Activity Based Costing (ABC).

The firm is WALMART

This course requires research, analysis, and drawing conclusions on a firm operating in the international business environment. This paper will provide you an opportunity to explore the many strengths and weaknesses a firm encounters in the international business environment.

A 12-15 page (excluding appendices, table of contents, abstract, reference, and bibliography) research paper (case study) is required. This paper represents 35% of the final course grade. Students will select a firm operating in the international business environment. This paper will be prepared consistent with the current APA Manual and will have a minimum of ten different references (No Wiki’s or Pedia’s). Some of the bibliography and references will most likely come from the firm you have chosen: source documents, e.g., annual reports, and financial statements.  As such this reduces the need for peer reviewed sources. However, peer reviewed sources are still important and should be listed in the bibliography/reference section(s) and cited in the paper as appropriate. This paper is due the last day of class.

In addition, the research paper will be prepared consistent with the following guidelines:

1. This serves as an introduction to the Research Paper. Provide an overview of the research design of the paper. Introduce the various topics that will be addressed in the research paper. Identify the method(s) that will be used to collect the data for the topics and how that data will be evaluated. 2. There will be a brief discussion of the firm to include its principle goods and services, market share, geographic locations where it operates, and major competitors.  3. Evaluate and discuss whether the firm could benefit by using Activity Based Costing (ABC). The discussion should include what factor(s) influenced your decision, the ramifications of implementing ABC in the international business environment, and how you would structure the distribution of costs using ABC for your firm.  4. Evaluate and discuss whether the firm could benefit by using standard costs. The discussion should include what factor(s) influenced your decision, the ramifications of costs, quantity, and variances, and the ramifications of using standard costs in the international business environment. 5. Evaluate and discuss how the firm could benefit by analyzing future projects in terms relevant costs. This discussion should include the firm’s future plans, such as, expansion, consolidation, and downsizing and how relevant costs could be used in the decision making.  6. Summary and conclusion(s). The discussion should provide a brief summary of the previous sections, and the conclusions you have reached.

Describe the environmental conditions and chemical processes that are leading to the dead zones.

Imagine that you are in charge of water quality for a local branch of your state’s Department of Environmental Protection. It is an agricultural region with several large industrial farms and concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). There have been several algal blooms in local lakes that have affected tourism and resulted in dead zones in the lakes. Your boss has asked you to write a report that describes the situation, analyzes three solutions, and uses one of those solutions in an overall management plan for the region.

Your report should address the following:

 Describe the environmental conditions and chemical processes that are leading to the dead zones.

 Include a two-paragraph summary of three different methods of controlling the agricultural runoff in the area. These methods should be from studies in a peer-reviewed journal. Each summary should consist of a description of the study, its methods, and its results.

 Prepare a plan of action for the region that uses one of the proposed solutions you have analyzed, along with your reasoning for choosing the solution.

Your paper should be a minimum of two pages in length (not including title and references pages) and follow

Describe the logic behind a field of study that is not covered in the text book.

Paul and Elder encourage students to redefine grades as levels of thinking and learning. What do they mean by this? In your view, are grades necessary or unnecessary for self-assessment? Provide an example from your own experience to support your position.

Your response should be at least 300 words in length.

Describe the logic behind a field of study that is not covered in the text book. Answer questions about the elements of thought (assumptions, problems, point of view, etc.) for the subject.
