For this essay we will be doing background reading of selections on the broad subject of governmental drug policy and its consequences for society. This will include the recently issued (June 2011) Report of the Global Commission on Drug Policy. Using your notes from the readings and class discussions identify a specific topic within the subject that is of interest to you, and then focus on a specific issue within that topic. What is a question at issue/point of disagreement? Answer the question to form a thesis statement that makes a strong claim, takes a strong position, or strongly advocates for a policy that you will argue during the course of the paper This thesis statement is to be in the form of a three-point thesis statement as discussed in class. The thesis statement should be incorporated somewhere in the first two paragraphs of your essay.
Part of the assignment is to research your topic. The idea of research is to both explore the topic and to find ideas and information that will support your claim/position and give you insight into points of view that are in disagreement with yours. The essay needs to be well reasoned with support from good sources, preferably peer reviewed. Please cite a minimum of six (6) sources, of which no more than two (2) may be original to the internet/web. These are meant to support your thesis as well as to provide information regarding counterarguments to your position.
