Follow and analyze a “current event” as it unfolds over the course of the semester. You will draw from South Asian newspapers. (These must be newspapers that are published in the subcontinent –(do not use for example, Pakistani-American papers or international papers reporting on South Asia.) Keep track of the issue’s development. Include 3 entries, and note your sources (including title and date of articles) each time.
In your analysis paper, present an overview of the event or issue as it has unfolded over the semester. Describe the major players and institutions, the drama, and its significance. Consider how the story relates to (expands on, complicates, contradicts, riffs off of) one of the primary themes of the course: gender, religion or religious practice, caste, class, sexuality, sexual identity, identity politics, social activism, or uses of popular culture. Other themes are also possible. If you find that your first article/event doesn’t develop obviously, you may follow a spin-off. For example, a story about cricket might lead to a linked one about inter-national (India-Pakistan) rivalry and hostility, or one about class.
