The police have also made efforts in enforcing the law intensively through intelligence gathering, street surveillance, increases in drug treatment services and hotline for area residents. The nature of enforcement depends on the drug market being targeted and the amount of resources available (Harocops & Hough, n.d.).
The police also arrest drug buyers in “reverse stings”. Through this, the demand side of the market is affected and it works best against new or occasional drug users. Police in Miami, Florida acknowledged that the process of arresting, charging and forcing the offender to appear in court and having a vehicle impounded worked as a deterrent (Harocops & Hough, n.d.).
