To communicate well with others is one of the life skills that a person should have. Communication in public setting requires an individual to convey the thoughts, ideas and feelings in systematic way to enhance understanding. Some people have challenges in conveying their thoughts because of various factors. Recognizing this hindrance is a key to enhancing and improving ones communication skills. Effective communication does not only entail being able to talk but it also requires a person to have the ability to listen to and understand others and to also read and interpret others’ body language and understand the best ways to bring the points out. This paper discusses some of the virtues and vices when communicating with others.
As a speaker, it is vital to embrace various virtues to enhance and even to make a conversation constructive. One of the virtues required of a speaker is to respect the other person. Respect is a very important aspect in communication. It creates a better atmosphere to interact with other person. Before engaging in communication and even in the process of communication, it is important for the speaker as well as the listener to respect the other. This will help to enhance communication as; every party in the conversation will have to respect the views and opinions of others (Anderson, 2013). Respect also concerns includes being considerate in the communication process. The speaker should not dominate in the conversion and should also avoid speaking about him or herself but rather stick to the issues under discussion as well as allow time for the other party to speak their mind.
The second virtue is to be honest with what one is speaking. Many people do not speak their mind but they hide under the cloak. This problem makes many people to experience changes such as anxiety and lack of confidence when speaking. It is a virtue to always speak one’s mind and to be always open. Speakers that speak the truth and who are honest with what they are saying are perceived in a positive way compared to those who often do not open up.
Third is to always stay focused on the conversation. Communication is something that requires participation of two or more parties and therefore it requires an individual to be attentive (Keyton et al. 2013). It does not sound good, when you are speaking to someone and yet performing other tasks such as typing. This creates the impression that if you are not paying attention you distract the conversation. Both parties must take their time to listen attentively and to focus on that, which is being discussed. It is also crucial for the conversations to be brief and to the point to ensure that, the other person does not lose interest. These are some of the virtues that can help to improve the communication process in a public setting.
On the other hand there are some vices which should be avoided when communicating with someone in public setting. One of the vices is failing to speak clearly. The purpose of communication is to pass a message to the other person for an action to be done. Mumbling and talking while facing the opposite direction of the listener is a vice that deter the process of communication. The speakers must stick to the topic and speak out audible to enhance understanding.
Another challenge that commonly occurs is failure to understand the listener or the audience. It is a vice to use words or language, which the listener is not understanding (Douglas, 2012). This will hinder the process of communication. It is therefore prudent for the speaker to always empathize with the listener and use appropriate language and words that resonate or the listener understands.
Another vice is over talking. This is talking much and giving no opportunity to the other person hindering the process of communication. It makes the listener uncomfortable and to have negative feelings about the interactions (Golen et al. 1983). This problem may affect the process of communication. Studies indicate that audiences are in a position to remember three to four things in a conversation (Golen et al. 1983). It is therefore, important for the speaker to summarize ideas to three or four as this enhances understanding.
In conclusion, communication in a public setting can be effective if speakers and listeners are all attentive. The listeners on the other hand have the responsibility to ensure that a conversation is successful. The client or listener must make time to listen, eliminate all distracters and pay attention to what the speaker is talking and should wait until the speaker finishes speaking before responding. These strategies will make communication in a public setting productive and both the parties will be able to understand one another. It is also prudent to respect others, to be honest and to always focus on the conversation. The communication process will be more enjoyable and the purpose or the goal of the communication will be achieved. It is therefore, essential to understand that settings do vary and communication in any public settings should be focused to ensure that it results to positive outcomes.
