Through this process you will reflect on the key concepts investigated in this course: · Support students’ productive struggle in mathematics. · Engage in responsive listening to support and extend student thinking. · Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse. · Plan, implement, and reflect on a task that promotes reasoning and problem-solving. · Propose specific actions to take in creating mathematics classrooms where all students have a sense of belonging. Why are we doing this project? Often, students don’t have time to sit back and reflect on how to transfer the concepts they learn about during a course into practice. This project is designed to give you time to reflect on just this. At its core, this project is a chance for you to articulate for yourself what you learned in this class so that you have a clear sense of what is most important to you and what you hope to take with you from this class into your future personal and professional life. What is this project? Your task is to write an essay (between 1000-1500 words; 2-3 pages, single-spaced with 12-point font) in which you reflect on what you have learned in this class. This essay will be a personal reflection, so it will reflect your own thinking, but it will also be your chance to demonstrate that you are critically engaging with the big ideas presented in this class through our course content and discussions. You will be expected to refer directly to and meaningfully grapple with course content in this reflective essay. The ultimate goal is to discuss how what you learned in this course will impact your future professional life (likely as an elementary math teacher, but perhaps through making connections between the course material and your future work in another field). If you would prefer to present your ideas in a different genre, such as a video essay, you are free to do so. However, please make sure you discuss your ideas with me first. How will you be graded for this project? Successful reflective essays will: · Demonstrate understanding of the course content (readings and discussions) · Connect course content to previous learning and experiences · Connect course content to your future professional experiences · Present a coherent, thoughtful reflection that does more than summarize the course · Demonstrate logical organization that allows for an easy reading experience
