Evaluate five mathematics lessons from the “Achieve the Core” website. This evaluation will take place in several steps. For Lesson #5, proceed as follows:
1. View the video recording on perseverance in solving multiplication word problems (link below). This lesson aligns with the mathematics instruction topic in Module 9.
2. Consider the content on explicit instruction in chapter 5 of Forbringer and Weber (F&W; 2021), focusing specifically on Figure 5.1 titled, Summary of an Explicit Lesson.
3. Consider the evidence-based practices in mathematics that you have learned about in the F&W text, articles, practice guides, and websites in Modules 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.
4. Write a two-page (single spaced, 12-point font) reflection paper with the following headings: Summary of the Classroom Video – 5 points (one succinct paragraph); Include a general overview of the lesson (content and instructional strategies) Opportunities for Enhancing Explicit Instruction – 10 points (3/4 of a page); Use Figure 5.1 to address all six areas (e.g., introduction, presentation of new content, guided practice, etc.) Furthering the Use of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) – 10 points (3/4 of a page); Discuss at least two additional EBPs found in Modules 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and/or 9 that you think would enhance the lesson for struggling mathematics learners, and provide strong rationales for each choice Other Considerations and Overall Impressions – 5 points (one succinct paragraph); Discuss other aspects of the lesson that you think might be improved to enhance learning of struggling mathematics learners, suggestions that extend beyond explicit instruction and EBPs. Close the paper with your general impressions of the lesson and a statement of encouragement to the teacher.
