Introduction- This is approximately half a page and should contain a thesis statement, gain the reader’s attention, and introduce the main idea of your passage. Context-Consists of two parts and is approximately 3 pages in length. Discuss the historical, cultural, social context of the book and passage. At the very least include a discussion of authorship, date, setting, and original audience. Discuss the literary context of the passage.
This should include the boundaries of the text (define the beginning and ending), relationship of passage to the larger literary context (how does it fit in relation to the material directly before and after it and how does it fit within the rest of the book as a whole), genre and how this impacts interpretation, and structure. Content-This is the body of the paper and should be approximately 5 pages in length. The goal of this section is to explain the meaning of the text in its context. Discuss the details of the text and how they work together to communicate meaning. This is not a verse by verse commentary, but rather a focus on key thoughts/ideas. The main points of your passage should function as subheading and each subheading should contain an explanation. At the very least include: A brief outline of the passage. This should not be sermon outline but rather reflect the structure of the passage and the flow of thought; Significant elements related to the historical and socio-cultural situation and issues discussed above; The meaning/definition of critical words or concepts; Intertextual references. Discuss parallels, references, allusions, variances within the passage and to other passages in the bible (grammatical and syntactical issues); Identify significant patterns, imagery, or symbols Any other pertinent issues related to the passage Application-this should be approximately 1 page in length Theological significance-explain what the theological truths of the passage are and how they are relevant for today; Application-Discuss the application of the passage and its theological significance to the 21st century (individuals, church, society). Application must be consistent with the message of the text as identified in the paper. Conclusion-Synthesize the main arguments/ideas expressed in the paper and highlight the meaning of the passage.
