Project #1: Self-Portrait Your first project is to research two artists and to create a self-portrait.
PART 1: Research the life and work of two artists famous for innovative artistic techniques and self-portraits, Frida Kahlo and Jean-Michel Basquiat, starting with the short videos below. See if you can find a self-portrait from each artist. Choose one of the self-portraits to use as inspiration for your self-portrait.
PART 2: Create a self-portrait You may use any medium (pencil, crayon, pastel, paint, marker, etc.) to mark with any base material (paper, wood, collage, etc.) to create your self portrait. You may also make a digital self-portrait, however no photo selfies! Take a picture of your artwork or scan it and upload to this assignment along with a short artistic statement (200+ words) about your piece. Explain what mood or aspect of your personality the self portrait captures. How do you use line, shape and contrast to create the image? What do the colors in the self-portrait represent? How is the self-portrait inspired by the work of Basquiat and/or Kahlo? What message do you want to send with this self portrait?
