C = Is it current? – How old is too old? This depends on the topic. In the social sciences – sociology, psychology — ten years is considered recent enough to be relevant. In fields subject to rapid change (e.g. politics, business, new technology), you would want the most current information available. R = Is it relevant? – According to this article, what is the answer to your research question? Here you will want to summarize the answer to your research question by listing two to four specific points from the article that you can use for your informative/persuasive pieces. Do not copy the article’s abstract. Put everything into your own words. A = Is it authoritative? – What are the author’s credentials and qualifications? Is the publisher, newspaper, magazine or website a credible source known for accuracy? – Google the answers to these questions, and paraphrase whatever information you find. P = What is the author’s purpose / point of view? – Is the author writing to inform? Persuade? Both? How do you know? – Does the author use the rhetorical appeals appropriately? o Does the author create a good appeal to logic with facts, statistics? Does the author cite sources? Give an example! o Does the author seem fair and balanced by addressing the opposition? Give an example! o If there is an appeal to emotion, is it appropriate for purpose and genre? Give an example!
