Write an essay about the ways in which Austria dealt with the legacies of Austria-Hungary.
1. Read the introductory chapter by Gabor Ergy and the corresponding chapter in Embers of Empire. 2. Research the transition to communism of the chosen country – include J. Bodnar’s article “Making a Long Story Longer”.
3. Write a 1200-word essay that tracks Austro-Hungarian legacies through the country’s history from 1918 to 1968. The essay should have Chicago style footnote citations be in 12 point font and double-spaced.
Cite lecture notes/PowerPoint, published scholarly sources, and the book Embers of Empire. 4. Organize the essay chronologically into three sections (A. Immediate postwar period B. World War Two C. 1945-1968 – make sure you identify thematic connections between political changes.
Focus on how many political aspects stayed the same in Austria after the dissolution of the austria hungarian empire such as the political parties and parliamentarians, the fighting between the Christian Socials and the Social Democrats and how that led to Nazi invasion, Austria during the Cold War, and how after World War II the legacy is weak.
