Twice in the semester, you will write a short reflection on a recent class reading. You will need to explain the key argument of the piece and relate it to some of the key themes of the class. These reading responses should be analytical (not just summaries), and you should also include any questions that the piece raises for you. Although these papers are short (hence shouldn’t require a lot of time to write), they still need to adhere to academic standards of writing, including using a proper citation format, such as MLA. Format: 800 to 1,000 words; double-spaced; font: Times New Roman (12 points).
Once you have identified the reading you want to focus on, please read it carefully, at least one, if not twice. For the response, you will need to briefly introduce the reading, what it is about, when it was written, what are the key arguments. This should be brief. Then you need to engage with at least one very specific part of the author’s argument. As noted in class, these texts are presenting several points and arguments. One way to focus on something specific is to draw on a direct quote. Explain the quote, what it is saying specific and how that relates to the author’s overall argument. For example, if you are focusing on Hall’s reading and decide to focus on the second meaning of the popular as ‘of the people’ then pick a direct quote from that part of the text, explain what he means, and what issues he sees with that use of ‘popular.’
Once you have done this, please think of an example from either from class – like the videos – or an example from outside of class and try and use the quote to ask questions of the example. Does the example align with the quote, does it contradict it, does is invite us to think of additional questions.
Finally, it is helpful to include a few questions – one or two is enough, that the article raises for you. Please make sure these are related to the topic of the class ie. youth, Africa, media.
Make sure to use a recognized citation format such as Chicago, MLA, or APA.
