Assignment Question
Travels with Charley: In Search of America analysis paper (3 pages of text + works cited page = 4 pages total) For your final paper, please consider an issue that Steinbeck discusses in Travels with Charley: In Search of America. Towards the end of his trip, Steinbeck pauses to remind himself that “I came out to learn” (268).
For this essay, try to articulate what you feel Steinbeck learned about a particular issue in the U.S. Essays should also consider whether Steinbeck’s view on the issue in 1962 would still ring true today. Folks might consider the following issues (largely taken from the “start here” handout from earlier in the semester):
- race, ethnicity, and/or social class
- representations of groups
- conflicts within the self
- boundaries (geographical, ideological, familial, etc.)
- regionalism—the southern U.S., for example
- politics/power and authority (on any number of levels)
- economic and technological developments—their impact on individuals and/or broader society
- consumerism
- the environment
As with any writing assignment, try go through a process for writing the paper: brainstorm with an “organizer,” move to an outline, and write/edit a rough draft or two (or three!). Going through this process will help produce a stronger final draft.
Although there is not one rigid structure to which everyone must adhere, it might be helpful to use the following guide:
P1: an introduction. This paragraph provides the work’s title, author, and original publication date; it should also very briefly summarize the role your chosen issue plays in the book. End the introduction with your own thesis (the main idea of your paper).
P2: a body paragraph. Here, discuss how a character/incident underscores Steinbeck’s thinking on the issue. Be certain to quote a sentence or two (or three) from the book to help make your point.
P3: a body paragraph. Here, discuss how another character/incident underscores Steinbeck’s thinking on the issue. This paragraph might concern something that functions as a symbol in the book. Be certain to quote a sentence or two (or three) from the book to help make your point.
P4: a body paragraph. Here, discuss the issue’s continued relevance in modern day America. How does Steinbeck hint at this issue’s likely staying power as something embedded in American society? Has anything changed regarding the issue? Be certain to quote a sentence or two (or three) from the book to help make your point.
P5: a conclusion. The final paragraph wraps up your essay; while it should reiterate your thesis, try not to just repeat your thesis word for word. Perhaps speculate on how you see the issue playing out in the years ahead.
Format: Final drafts need to be typed, double spaced, and printed in black ink in 12 point Times New Roman or 11 point Calibri. Standard page margins are 1”. All papers must follow current MLA guidelines.
