Always Go to the Funeral

by Dierdre Sullivan

I believe in always going to the funeral. My father taught me that.

The first time he said it directly to me, I was sixteen and

trying to get out of going to the funeral for Miss Emerson, my

old fifth-grade math teacher. I did not want to go. My father was

unequivocal. Dee, he said, youre going. Always go to the

funeral. Do it for the family.

So my dad waited outside while I went in. It was worse

than I thought it would be: I was the only kid there. When the

condolence line deposited me in front of Miss Emersons shell-

shocked parents, I stammered out, Sorry about all this, and

stalked away. But, for that deeply weird expression of sympathy

delivered twenty years ago, Miss Emersons mother still remembers

my name and always says hello with tearing eyes.

That was the first time I went unchaperoned, but my parents

had been taking us kids to funerals and calling hours as a matter of

course for years. By the time I was sixteen, I had been to five or

six funerals. I remember two things from going to funerals: bottomless

dishes of free mints, and my father saying on the ride home, You

cant come in without going out, kids. Always go to the funeral.

Sounds simplewhen someone dies, get in your car and go to

calling hours or the funeral. That, I can do. But I think a personal

philosophy of going to funerals means more than that.

Always go to the funeral means that I have to do the right

the thing when I really, really dont feel like it. I have to remind myself

of it when I could make some small gesture, but I dont really have to

and I definitely dont want to. Im talking about those things that represent

only inconvenience to me, but the world to the other guy. You know, the

painfully under-attended birthday party. The hospital visit during happy

hour. The shiva calls for one of my exs uncles. In my humdrum life, the

daily battle hasnt been good versus evil. Its hardly been so epic. Most

days, my real battle is doing good versus doing nothing.

In going to funerals, Ive come to believe that while I wait to make

a grand heroic gesture, I should just stick to the small inconveniences that

let me share lifes inevitable, occasional calamity.

On a cold April night three years ago, my father died a quiet death

from cancer. His funeral was on a Wednesday, middle of the work week. I

had been numb for days when, for some reason, during the funeral, I turned

and looked back at the folks in the church. The memory of it still takes my

a breath away. The most human, powerful, and humbling thing Ive ever

seen was a church at 3:00 on a Wednesday full of inconvenienced people

who believe in going to the funeral.

Definitions for words in bold: Always Go to the Funeral

unequivocal: completely clear

condolence line: people online to express sympathy

unchaperoned: unaccompanied by a responsible adult

shiva: Jewish mourning period

humdrum: dull; ordinary

inevitable: unavoidable

calamity: disaster

Does the free market work?

Essay Question:
Does the free market work?
The concept of the free market is central to capitalism. Detractors and defenders of capitalism alike regard the free market as key to its definition and functioning. Those who critique capitalism argue that the free market is the root cause of many if not all the problems of the modern world, while those who support capitalism claim that it is due to the free market that contemporary society has both more wealth and more political freedoms than any society without a free market. However, even amongst the supporters of capitalism there is disagreement regarding how much the free market should be regulated, if at all. The role and function of the free market is one of the most pressing political and economic issues of our time.
This essay asks you to: 1) explain the concept of the free market and 2) provide arguments for whether it is on the whole good or bad for society. This is a position paper, meaning that you should take a clear stance on the issue and argue for the validity of your position. The best way to argue your point is to provide a clear theoretical outline and support this with historical examples (such as the Great Depression or actually existing communism). Your paper should rely only on recognized authorities on the subject.
Your essay will be evaluated based on the strength and coherence of your arguments, the quality of your sources and your ability to correctly summarize their ideas, as well as the accurate use of examples to support your claims.
Instructions and Format:
The essay should be a minimum of 6 pages in length, and a maximum of 8 (not including the title page and bibliography.) Please use type 12 font, New Times Roman. When citing, please use APA. There are resources in the library and in Blackboard to help you cite correctly.
The essay should be submitted on-line, via Blackboard.
Please note that there are two due dates. If you hand your essay in earlier, I will provide you with lots of feedback and comments. However, if you choose to hand-in the essay later, you will not be penalized, but you will also not receive detailed comments.
Due date for those who want comments: Wednesday, November 2 (week 9), end of day.
Due date for those who do not need comments: Wednesday, November 16 (week 11) end of day. Late penalties of 10%/day apply for any essays that are submitted after this date.
