The Research Proposal

Hand in date 12th July 2016 @ 4pm. Additional guidance

Write a research proposal addressing your identified topic. You should have agreed the topic and focus with the module leader/your seminar tutor before submission.

The proposal should be 2000 words in length and needs to include a preliminary review of the literature (at least 6-7 sources).

It should use the following structure as a guide (rather than a prescription- you should adjust to suit your particular proposal as appropriate):

1.Title and title page
2. Abstract
3. Introduction
Area and topic
background and context
statement of purpose (Aim: i.e. what you want to achieve)
why its worth doing (significance)
4. Objectives (i.e. how you will achieve your aim (s)
5.Methodology and methods
6.The Literature
7. Ethical considerations
8. Timetable for completion of the dissertation

Your proposal should be designed and written so that it would explain and justify your study to a non-expert.

Title
This should say as much as possible in as few words as possible. Examples:
A case study of the impact of Anti-Social Behaviour Orders on youth nuisance on X estate in Y
or
Counting the cost of independence: a study of older people in sheltered housing in Manchester receiving preventive equipment and adaptations services

Abstract
A brief summary (of the whole proposal). It is like an executive summary and fulfils the same objectives. It should say:

What the work is about and what it aims to achieve;
How it intends to do it

It is the last thing to be written.

Introduction
This section sets the scene. It should convey how the proposed study fits in to what is known about the area under discussion, and locate it in relation to current knowledge and practice.

Creswell (1994) suggest four components:

Establishing the problem leading to the study
Casting the problem within the literature
Discussing deficiencies within the literature about the problem
Noting the significance of the problem

Significance
This relates to the importance of, justification for or contribution of the study i.e. why is it worth doing. There are generally three areas of significance: to knowledge; to policymakers; to practitioners. The last two are most likely to be relevant.

Research Aim/Problem
This section should tell the reader what questions the research is trying to answer.

The Literature
This identifies the body of literature relevant to the study (6-7 sources). This should be approx 1000 words

Methodology and methods
Clarify here what the overall approach to the study is to be remember it is a review of the literature although you may use quantitative and qualitative sources.

References
All cited references should be here. Use the University guidelines to compile the list properly.

Timetable (include as an appendix so it doesnt count in the word count)
This should include a timetable for your dissertation

Tips – Designing your research proposal

The most important part of the task is to get the research question(s) right.

There are three questions you need to be able to answer

What is the research trying to find out/what question(s) is it trying to answer?

How will the proposed research answer the question?

Why is the research worth doing?

Topic: Journal: Grant Funding

Journal: Grant Funding
Resource development is a major responsibility for human services administrators. Identifying sources of funding for a particular program is an essential part of resource development. Grants are one of a variety of sources from which human services organizations draw funding for programs. If you search the Internet, you are likely to find plenty of information about a variety of available grants. Federal, state, and local government agencies, as well as private entities, such as foundations and corporations, offer grants. Search the Internet for available grants and identify one grant to use for this Journal Assignment. Think about human services programs for which this grant might be beneficial.

Post by Day 7 in your Journal a description of a human services program (Hope in Action) this information is attached in a file…. with which you are familiar. Next, post a link for the grant you identified. Explain why you believe this grant would be beneficial to the program, and how. Finally, share an insight you had or a conclusion you drew about identifying available grants.

Suggested length: approximately 250–500 words (1–2 pages)

Putting Change into Action

Project description
Putting Change into Action

Before implementing any change, effective leaders take the time to carefully consider exactly what types of change are necessary to bring about the desired end. You should identify those areas where change would be most beneficial, as well as any potential obstacles. When combined with an understanding of the system that you hope to influence, these are all critical steps and each increases the likelihood that meaningful and long-lasting changes can transpire.

Based on your readings in Hickman (2010), respond to the following and be sure to note the relationship to your Capstone Project and include relevant examples from your lifes Mission and Vision statements:

What are the drivers for change and what types of leadership are going to be required for change to occur?

What is the change practice you intend to deploy?

Assignment 1: Testing Hypotheses for Means
This week you have explored three different approaches to t tests. By this point, you know that each test has assumptions about the data and type of research questions it can answer. For this Assignment, you will be provided with three scenarios. As you read the scenarios, be sure and think about aligning the appropriate t test with the question. Consider whether the data are independent samples and if two samples are being compared.

To prepare for this Assignment:
Review the Learning Resources and the media programs related to t tests.
Next, using SPSS software, open the High School Longitudinal Study dataset provided in this week’s Learning Resources.
Also, review the t test scenarios found in this week’s Learning Resources and consider the three different approaches of t tests:
Independent sample t test
Paired sample t test
One sample t test
Based on the High School Longitudinal Study dataset and each research scenario provided, choose a t test analysis and run a sample t test.
Once you perform your t test analysis, review Chapter 11 of the Wagner text to understand how to copy and paste your output into your Word document.
For this Assignment:
Write a 2- to 3-paragraph analysis of your t test results for each research scenario. In your analysis, display the data for the output. Based on your results, provide an explanation of what the implications of social change might be.
Use proper APA format, citations, and referencing for your analysis, research questions, and output.
By Day 7
Submit Assignment 1: Testing Hypothesis for a Mean.

Assignment 2: t Tests in Practice
The practice of quantitative research not only involves statistical calculations and formulas but also involves the understanding of statistical techniques related to real world applications. You might not become a quantitative researcher nor use statistical methods in your profession, but as a consumer, citizen, and scholar-practitioner, it will be important for you to become a critical consumer of research, which will empower you to read, interpret, and evaluate the strength of claims made in scholarly material and daily news.

For this Assignment, you will critically evaluate a scholarly article related to t tests.
To prepare for this Assignment:
Search for and select a quantitative article specific to your discipline and related to t tests. Help with this task may be found in the Course guide and assignment help linked in this week’s Learning Resources.
For this Assignment:
Write a 2- to 3-page critique of the article. In your critique, include responses to the following:
Why did the authors use this t test?
Do you think it’s the most appropriate choice? Why or why not?
Did the authors display the data?
Do the results stand alone? Why or why not?
By Day 7
Submit Assignment 2: t tests in Practice.

Topic: Dementia

Application: PICO Analysis of Dementia
A PICO analysis is used to pose a focused clinical question to which you find appropriate evidence-based answers. The PICO question should include the patient or population (P), anticipated intervention (I), comparison group or current standard (C), and outcome desired (O). In this Assignment, you develop a question related to dementia. Through your PICO analysis, you explore various resources and examine current evidence to answer the question you develop.
To prepare:
Select one of the following disorders as your topic: dementia.
Review the guidelines in the “Literature Review Matrix” document in this week’s Learning Resources. (see last part)
