Topic: Sociology

Sociologists study social phenomena that are relevant to them in terms of the social climate in which they live. Today’s climate involves:
• the aftermath of a war in Iraq that left Iraq ripe for Isis militants,
• a radical Sunni group determined to return Iraq to pre-war Sunni control,
• a struggling economic recovery from a deep recession at home,
• the crashing auto and housing industries resulting in huge unemployment and mass foreclosures, and
• a schism between political parties so wide that nothing is being accomplished as each party works diligently to stop the other party from passing legislation.

With all of this upheaval, it is not surprising that many sociologists are now researching and writing about terrorists, economic upheaval, and the loss of identity due to the loss of jobs.
During all of this turmoil, the first African American was elected President of the United States. Many changes have taken place since President Obama’s election and reelection to the White House. Few of these changes have been debated as much as the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
For this assignment, you will use your sociological imagination to ferret out some of the issues behind this debate.
• Go to the government healthcare website and find three facts about the ACA. List and describe each fact.
• Using your understanding of theory and the chart on page 17 of your textbook, explain how a functionalist, conflict theorist, and interactionist would explain the Affordable Care Act. Be sure to discuss the ACA in terms of each perspective’s view of the individual, social order, and social change.
o Do not debate the ACA itself. Rather, use these perspectives to understand how a sociologist studies the Act.
• In a sentence or two, describe your personal beliefs about the ACA.
• Use sociological imagination to explain how you developed your beliefs concerning the Act. Include a discussion of a minimum of two of the following: race, class, gender, religious and political affiliations, and how being part of these groups affects your thoughts on the Act.
• Finally, using the materials in Chapter 2, how might you study people’s beliefs about the ACA? Describe the steps you would follow in the research process to answer this question. Be sure to describe your study, the method, and a few specific questions you would ask.
Your response must be at least two pages in length, using the Times New Roman, 12-pt. font. Each part of the question should be completely answered in its own section. It is required that the sections use the following headings: Facts, Applying the Perspectives, Personal Beliefs, Sociological Imagination, and Research Process. Be sure you use in-text citations as well as an appropriate references page at the end, according to APA style.

Topic: Literacy Development Through Play-Based Activities

A young preschooler stands on the playground, brandishing a paper towel roll as his “sword” and claiming victory over the land. As he jumps down from the stairs, he walks over to two children who are rubbing sticks together, making an imaginary fire. As he joins them, he begins to “warm his hands,” mimicking campfire conversations he had when he went camping with his own family. The other two children join him in this dialogue, talking about yummy marshmallows, shining stars, and comfy sleeping bags.
Though only a few minutes long, how might this type of play strengthen early literacy experiences? Furthermore, how might these interactions support each child in his or her language development journey?
In this Discussion, you explore the importance of play in language acquisition and development. You also examine the five essential components of reading.
To prepare: Review the Reading is Fundamental article titled “Home-to-School Connections: The Five Essential Components of Reading” (n.d.-a) in this module’s Learning Resources. As you review the article, consider what you may already know about phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency. Then, select one age group (infants, toddlers, preschool, or kindergarten/primary) and explore the Reading Rockets website and the Zero to Three website, also in the Learning Resources. With your selected stage in mind, identify center-based activities that might use play to enhance language and literacy.

What is this family policy? Why was this policy created? Who created it? When was it created?

For this assignment, you will look at the intersections of family life and public policy within a context of interest to you. You may select any public policy (historical or current, federal or state, or in another country) that affects families and critically analyze it from a sociological perspective. You will provide a detailed background on your public policy and examine how your policy affects family life. You will critique the policy using your sociological imagination, as well as the readings you gather on your own.

To get you started, here is a topic to explore (as it relate to families): (abortion)

NOTE: This is not specific policy, it’s just topic. Your job will be to find a specific public policy that relates to this topic (and then you will analyze it for the paper).

You will provide a detailed background on your public policy and examine how your chosen policy affects family life. Your paper should incorporate the following questions, though they do not need to be answered in this order, and should be answered in essay format. It should begin with an introduction that outlines your paper’s main points, and then address the following questions:

** What is this family policy? Why was this policy created? Who created it? When was it created?

** What do the sources you found say about this policy? Provide detailed summaries of the readings you ’ve selected. {Note: doing a very thorough job on your summaries will be key to doing well on this assignment}

** What is an ideology and what do you think this policy tells us about family ideology?

** What are the effects of this policy on families? (Note: they may affect different groups and families differently and you should explore this)

** What are your own opinions about this policy and why?

Your paper should include at least 7 references from academic or reputable news sources (no blogs, Wikipedia, or other non—academic sources).

The paper should be 8 full pages typed (not including your title page or reference page),
double—spaced, 1-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font.

Anthropological Case Studies are ethnographies that have been gathered by participant observation over long periods of involvement with a community, using both emic and etic perspectives:

An \”emic\” account is a description of behavior or a belief in terms meaningful (consciously or unconsciously) to the actor; that is, an emic account comes from a person within the culture. Almost anything from within a culture can provide an emic account.
An \”etic\” account is a description of a behavior or belief by an observer, in terms that can be applied to other cultures; that is, an etic account attempts to be \’culturally neutral\’. (https://www.princeton.edu/~achaney/tmve/wiki100k/docs/Emic_and_etic.html)

Etic accounts are viewed through Cultural Relativism: ethical behavior in culture-specific settings.

What to do:

Compare and contrast two case studies we have looked at so far this semester. The point of the exercise is for you to demonstrate an understanding of how these different practices from the past
and/or from the present serve social needs in different cultures around the world. Give emic perspectives for both sides and your personal (etic) perspective on the practices as a whole.

Choose one of the following sets of Case Studies for this assignment:

A) Different approaches: Shamanistic use of hallucinogens vs. recreational drug use

How to do it:

1) Introduce your two examples clearly by name, location and timeframe. Write a solid thesis statement
that encapsulates the intention of this essay and place it at the end of your first paragraph.

2) Discuss the process and function of change in religious practices/belief structures/healing systems.
What changes occur in a traditional culture when a new belief system is imposed or assimilated?
What changes occur in the new belief system in response to accommodating or changing the old?
What were/are the intended and/or unexpected results from these changes?

3) Using specific examples from your chosen case studies, discuss the implied or stated ethical
problems, behaviors and long-term outcomes of the case studies you are comparing.

Required format:
a) first and last names, date and topic in upper left corner (nothing else).
a) typed, 12-point font, in English
b) double-spaced
c) 1-inch margins top/bottom and left/right sides
d) proof-read and spell-checked for grammar, spelling and punctuation
e) two full pages of text minimum, maximum three pages

Topic: Can theories of motivation provide practical guidance to Project Managers?

There are many well-known theories relating to motivating both individuals and teams but how can PMs use the theory in practical ways throughout a project?
A review of the literature and published case studies can be used to examine motivational theory in action across different industries and cultures and/or to develop a guide to best practice for PMs

This dissertation is literature review based, so please find enough articles to support the discussion.

The max number of references is 80, but I think for my dissertation its better to use over 100 references, is that possible to do it?

Eliot’s poetry is both “traditional” and “new,” in both instances largely in connection with its use of allusion. Consider how allusion functions in The Waste Land. Does it connect the poem to a long literary tradition or does it mark a rupture from tradition that coincides with Modernism?

Choose from the following essay suggestions. You may create your own topic, with approval, if you consult me before 17 July. You must use secondary sources appropriate to your topic in both focus and quantity. Your paper should demonstrate a grasp of both the primary text(s) you choose to write on and the critical materials available. This means that you must show an understanding of the reliability of critical materials, how to find scholarly criticism, and an ability to judge whether a work is dated or current. While some topics will have more or less critical materials available than others, I advise a 3–4 sources minimum. You may wish to consider biographical materials, letters, print history, journals, or other such sources as well.

1.Many of the works we have studied this term derive from a cultural context where social imbalances are reflected in the texts (ie: class, race, colonialism, etcetera). Consider one or more texts (that you have not previously written on) by taking into account how they respond to their cultural and historical circumstances.

2.Several of the authors we have studied seem to be inspired by or interested in each other’s work. Consider two or more authors’ relationships (personal or purely literary) and how they can inform their writings. Is it a mutual influence? Does a later author alter the way we read an earlier one? Try to consider as many levels in the texts as possible, such as allusions, style, setting, themes, argumentative purposes, or even related texts and biographical information.

3.Eliot’s poetry is both “traditional” and “new,” in both instances largely in connection with its use of allusion. Consider how allusion functions in The Waste Land. Does it connect the poem to a long literary tradition or does it mark a rupture from tradition that coincides with Modernism? You might choose to focus on the role of a particular allusion in the poem, such as Eliot’s references to Shakespeare or Ovid.

4.Joyce\’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Woolf\’s Jacob\’s Room, and Wilde\’s The Picture of Dorian Gray all shows significant interests in form and style (as distinct from social or thematic concerns). To what degree can Jacob\’s Room appear as an answer or rebuttal to A Portrait of the Artist or Portrait as an answer or rebuttal to Dorian Gray?

5.Texts as stylistically and politically distinct as Wilde\’s The Picture of Dorian Gray and Woolf\’s Jacob\’s Room are still considered modernist and hence part of a shared aesthetic tradition. Please discuss any two or more texts from this term as either contiguous works in a common movement or as disjunctions in contested practices. Based on such a comparison, what information emerges with regard to modernist literature in general?
