M1D2: Case Study: The Ex-Roommate

Read the following case study and the instructions that follow it.

\”There are three of us women presently living together. I couldn\’t afford the place on my own so I took in two others looking for a place to rent. The conflict is with an ex-roommate who lived with two of us last semester. She moved in with a friend for the free room and board. Sometimes she decides she doesn\’t want to drive the 12 miles to her new home, so she stays the night with us. This went on just about every night last week. When here, she wore my clothes every day (without asking first), slept on our couch (which gave us no place to study), ate our food, and used our personal items like shampoo and makeup. I finally had enough when she walked by me after class wearing my brand new wool coat with the sleeves rolled up and said, Hi! Im wearing your coat! I dont mind if people borrow my clothes, but I prefer that they ask first and that I get them back in the condition I lent them. Also, Id like it if she would plan when she is spending the night so she could bring her own clothes, makeup, and food. As the saying goes, I love her but I cant afford to keep her! After a week of this, I finally had it with her and really blew up! I screamed and yelled at her, and she burst into tears, packed up, and left. It felt good letting off all that pent-up anger, but I somehow wish it hadnt worked out this way.\”

This is an adaption from the original version of the case study, which appears in Cahn, D., & Abigail, R.A. (2014), Managing conflict through communication (5th Edition), p. 26.

Determining Costs of Information Requests

183: Determining Costs of Information Requests
Determine the cost of processing requests for information by using the following data.

Types of RequestsAverage Time to Respond to Request
In-person requests: Someone appears in the Patient Data Services/HIM Department and requests to review or receive copies of the record.15 minutes
Requests received by mail or by fax8 minutes
Requests received by telephone5 minutes

One full-time equivalent (FTE) (2080 hours) is assigned to this function. The salary for this position is $29,000 a year.
1.What is the unit cost of the time to respond to requests for information?
2.What other data should be factored into this cost to obtain a unit cost for this function?
3.Given the following mix of types of requests, approximately how many requests could be answered per year (e.g., 50% mail/fax, 25% telephone, and 25% in person)?
Critical Thinking
Remember that there are considerations that the health information management (HIM) director should take into account when measuring coder productivity:
Do coders perform other tasks such as charge capture, data abstracting, documentation review, and so on?
Do coders find missing records?
Do coders answer the phone?
Are records sent to coders in the correct order?
Is severity of illness taken into account when determining productivity?

wealth disparity

Annotated Bibliography for wealth disparity
Introductory Paragraph to Topic: Refer to the Final Argumentative Essay guidelines for your topic selection. Write an introductory paragraph with at least 150 words, which clearly explains the topic, the importance of further research, and ethical implications.
Thesis statement: Write a direct and concise thesis statement, which will become the solution to the problem that you will argue or prove in the Week Five Final Argumentative Essay. A thesis statement should be a declarative statement that makes one point in 25 words or less. The thesis statement must appear at the end of the introductory paragraph.
Annotated Bibliography: Develop an annotated bibliography to indicate the quality of the sources you have read. For each annotation, you need to summarize in your own words how the source contributes to the solution of the global societal issue. Your annotation should be one to two paragraphs long (150 words or more) and fully address the purpose, content, evidence, and relation to other sources you found on this topic. The annotated bibliography must include no less than five scholarly sources that will be used to support the major points of the Final Argumentative Essay. Critical thinking skills need to be demonstrated by accurately interpreting evidence used to support various positions of the topic.

Descriptive Data Analytics

For the assignment, you will use 2 Data Analytics spreadsheet, linked in the Resources. There are two parts to this assignment.

Time for some exploring: You are a data analyst tasked to provide analysis of the data provided by the data warehouse team. You decide to use two unsupervised methods: clustering ( k-means) and association analysis (market basket analysis). This analysis will help the marketing team to group each widget into three or four different levels of products at different pricing. The market basket analysis will help operations and sales teams understand which products tend to be purchased together for potential opportunities to maximize shelf space or up-sell during the time of purchase.

Part 1 ( k-means) of the assignment: Use the k-means algorithm with either Microsoft Excel or SAS on the data contained on the worksheet titled \”K.\” Suppose the centers of each cluster are C, F, I, and L. Run the k-means algorithm for one epoch. What was the outcome of your experiment? Describe the clusters created with the experiment? What belongs to which cluster and what are the centers of the new clusters themselves?

Part 2 (basket analysis) of the assignment: You will work with the worksheet titled \”Basket.\” Run experiments using with either Microsoft Excel or SAS, and run an association algorithm to obtain a number of combinations (itemsets) based off the data within the worksheet. Perform your analysis on the output of your association algorithm. What are the most common itemsets? What is the number of items within the top five itemsets? What is the average value of the top five itemsets? What is the total value of the tickets that contain items in the top five itemsets? What can a business analyst do with this information? Why is this information interesting? Is this information useful to solving a business problem?

Paper: (3 to 6 pages for the body section, excluding cover page & references pag). Use APA (6th edition) style and format; include your analysis and answers to the exercises in parts 1 and 2 above, with a minimum of five references; and cover the following topics:

1 Explain how and why developing and running experiments using cluster and association algorithms can help organizations solve business problems and improve data and information accuracy.
2 Explain why you selected and used the analytical software tool for your experiments and how the tool is useful for data analytics.
3 Demonstrate how analytical and statistical methods, processes, and tools are used to help decision makers make better decisions.
4 Demonstrate how analytical and statistical tools are used to aggregate data into information and knowledge with analysis and experimentation.

Assignment Requirements

APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to APA (6th edition) style and formatting.
Length of paper: 3-5 pages, excluding the references page & cover page.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Answer the Questions

Project description
1. Firms actually have incentives to use what is called \”window dressing\” techniques to manipulate financial information. Ruth has mentioned one way by delaying a payment to a creditor. I think it is worth to shed more light on this point.

We studied cash flows and profits. Therefore, I appreciate if you develop a list of ways through which each measure can be manipulated by managers. Which measure is more robust and can better represent firm performance?

2. Do you think that the use of cash flows statements is decreasing in practice?

Systems Flowchart and Cost planning

Using flowchart software, create a systems flowchart of the coding process in a health care facility. Develop separate flowcharts for each of the various types of patient (e.g., inpatient, outpatient, mental health, Medicare, or commercial insured) if they are processed differently.
oThe various operations that occur within the system
oThe files that are accessed
oThe reports produced
oThe applications programs that are required to operate the system
The flowchart should trace the flow of data from the patient encounter to the generation of the bill (electronic or paper). Include in the flow of information:
oAn inpatient versus an outpatient
oVarious third-party payers (e.g., Medicare versus Blue Cross)
Develop additional charts to show how the flow of information differs for
oAn inpatient versus an outpatient
oVarious third-party payers (e.g., Medicare versus Blue Cross)

B. A family practice physician who has just completed her residency is considering the cost of doing business as a solo practitioner. She needs to determine the costs of doing business.
1.List the types of expenses associated with the solo physician\’s office (i.e., rental of space).
2.Categorize each type of expense in Question 1 as fixed, variable, or semivariable.
3.Estimate the likely costs of doing business in your city as a family practitioner in a solo practice on an annual basis.
4.Estimate the annual patient service revenue needed to stay in business.
5.Relate revenue to the amount of service possible by one physician.
6.Describe how the financial picture changes in fee-for-service versus capitation environments.
7.Where might cost benefits occur if the family physician teamed up with two or three other physicians? What are the negative consequences of this idea?
8.State the resources used for any of these answers

SDS

(SDS) is an organic compound which has the molecular structure found in Figure 2. It is an anionic surfactant that consists of a mixture of sodium alkyl sulfates and appears as a white powder in solid form. As is the case with any surfactant, it is used to lower the surface tension of aqueous solutions 12. The applications of SDS range from its industrial uses in cleaning and hygiene products to its laboratory uses in the study of the biochemistry of proteins. Over the past decade, the uses of SDS have expanded from the chemical industry to being found within many aspects of everyday life. Primarily, SDS is found in detergents used for cleaning and laundry where the removal of oily residues is required. Due to its molecular structure, it has an amphiphilic characteristic that makes it ideal for these uses. It is also employed for other uses in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.
The usage of SDS in a laboratory is as a research tool in the biochemistry of proteins. When SDS is introduced to a protein it causes it to unfold, or denature. Denaturation is a process in which a protein loses its native structure due to the presence of an organic compound. The protein unfolding occurs as the negatively charged SDS bonds to it causing electrostatic repulsion and disruption of the proteins non-covalent bonds 13.
Much research has been done on the fluorescent properties of protein encapsulated gold nanoparticles and how those properties vary with pH-induced protein unfolding. However, the same cannot be said for the usage of a surfactant such as SDS in Gold nanocluster spectroscopy. What work has been done with SDS in using it to cause denaturation has been looking at how it affects the properties of pure proteins when they unfold without the presence of gold clusters 14. When SDS is used in increasing concentrations to unfold BSA, the fluorescence emission intensity of a probe is observed to react differently depending on how much SDS is present and therefore depends on what state the proteins structure is in.
