Semiotic Democracy Theory

Please identify a recent major news story and examine how it is being/was covered by the following web sites:Huffington PostTownhallPoliticoThink about how the framing, and agenda-setting, phenomenistic filtering, and other potential relative biases of news media outlets – broadcast, print and online – may drive the story and potentially influence public attitudes culturally and politically.Address some, all, or some mix of these questions in a cogent response:1. What is the issue/story you analyzed for framing, filtering and relative bias; and2. How may the \”legacy\” and \”new\” news media be influencing public attitudes culturally and/or politically on this topic? Or, are they having any influence at all based on your educated response to the readings?Addressing some or all of the following questions can help you with your analysis:• What is similar in presentation style in all three websites? What is different? How does their coverage compare to the traditional mass media you reviewed?• Do the websites have a political stance that you can discern? How do you know? Does the stance seem credible, even if it is from a position with which you don\’t agree?• Where does each website gets its information? Do you trust those news sources? If so or not, why?• What do you think of the bloggers? Would you want to blog on this website?• Would you go to this website for more detailed information and discussion of an issue in which you were interested?• How well do you think these websites function as spaces for free discussion? Do you think these kinds of discussions are, in general, helpful to the democratic process?• Do you think that V.O. Key’s notion of elite pluralism still applies to how the media influence politics and the social world?• What standards should apply to journalistic practices?• Should there be government regulation of media practitioners (bloggers, journalists, videographers, etc.), media outlets, and / or media content? What does history suggest?• Do you see a link between media literacy and John Fiske\’s semiotic democracy (freedom to make personally relevant meaning)? Please include urls to the story you examined.Your objective here is to ponder how information sources such as these may be turning the Internet into the new \”public square.\”

Heart disease and firefighters

Research paper- Document needs to provide thorough analysis and interpretation of heart disease in the American fire service. Some questions to ask include: What is heart disease? Why do firefighters have a higher risk for heart disease? How can we save firefighters from heart disease? Add explanation of the human heart, explaining relevant anatomy and physiology, and the diseases of the heart.Sources must be from scholarly journals, articles, and books, such as, American Heart Association, The Journal of the American Medical Association, J.E.M.S. magazine, Firehouse magazine, National Institute of Health archives, Center for Disease Control and Prevention archives.Integrate source material to support a thesis. It must be analyzed, and interpreted to support the thesis. Do not to rely too heavily on source material at the expense of highlighting an opinion from first person as demonstrated through analysis, evaluation, and/or interpretation, of the sources in support of the thesis. When integrating source material, utilize signal phrases with in-text citations and a page of cited works that follow APA format. Restate the thesis in the conclusion.

The separation of powers

Read and respond to Chapter 1 in American Democracy in Peril.Reading Response Assignment Guidelines:1. First step: Read the first chapter from American Democracy in Peril: \”The First Challenge: The Separation of Powers.\”The assignment. The reading responses have two parts.First, I want you to summarize the the main topic and main argument of the text in an opening paragraph. You should be able to summarize the main argument in one or two sentences. Authors usually write books or articles in order to convince the reader of something. As you read, keep asking yourself, “What is the main point? What is the author trying to convince me of?” No matter how complicated and long the argument is, there is always a main point that can be summarized briefly. Caution: Telling me what the text is about is not the same as telling me what the author is arguing!Second, react to the argument in some thoughtful manner. Your reaction can take many forms. For instance: What is interesting to you about the reading? Does it remind you of anything that you have experienced or read about in another context (or perhaps in our class)? Does the argument have implications that are interesting to you? Are their parts of the argument you strongly agree or disagree with? Explain. What other questions are raised by the argument, sub-arguments, or proposals? Explain. In short, what I am asking you to do is (1) to figure out what the author is saying, (2) to really think about it, then (3) to make a written report on the results of that thinking.
