Discussion: History of the School Counseling Profession

The history of the school counseling profession is filled with stories of people and events that helped shape the profession and make it what it is today. Founded in 1952, the American School Counselor Association was an offshoot of the first professional counseling organization, the National Vocational Guidance Association, established in 1913 (Herr & Erford, 2015). This history of counseling stems from the vocational service or guidance initiated by Frank Parsons, credited as the first counselor and the father of American vocational guidance (Wright, 2012, p. 7). Parsonss three-factor state-trait model has been the basis of vocational guidance for decades and was instrumental in the early development of school counseling.

Over the decades, the school counseling profession has been influenced by multiple historical events, political agendas, and societal needs. Examples include the Industrial Revolution, demographic shifts, child labor laws, World War I, the launch of the Soviet Unions Sputnik, and the Education Reform movement of the 1990s. As in the past, the school counseling profession will continue to evolve and grow. This growth will likely be guided by current experts in the field, including contributions from ASCA, the American Counseling Association, and the National Board for Certified Counselors.

For this Discussion, you examine historical events that influenced the school counseling profession. You also consider how the history of school counseling provides perspective on the future of the profession.

Post by Day 3 a description of two historical events foundational to the evolution of the profession of school counseling. Then, explain what factors contributed to those events. Finally, explain one way the profession might evolve.
