Philosphy

Having completed the unit of philosophy of religion, you are now ready to respond to an article written by an actual atheist. This article titled “On Being an Atheist,” was written by H. J. McCloskey in 1968 for the journal Question. McCloskey is an Australian philosopher who wrote a number of atheistic works in the 1960s and 70s including the book God and Evil (Nijhoff, 1974). In this article, McCloskey is both critical of the classical arguments for God’s existence and offers the problem of evil as a reason why one should not believe in God. Please note the following parameters for this paper:1. Your assignment is to read McCloskey’s short article found in the Reading & Study folder in Module/Week 7 and respond to each of the questions below. Your instructor is looking for a detailed response to each question.2. The response paper is to be a minimum of 1,500 words (not including quotes) and must be written as a single essay and not just a list of answers to questions.3. The basis for your answers must primarily come from the resources provided in the lessons covering the philosophy of religion unit of the course (Evans and Manis, Craig, and the presentation) and these sources must be mentioned in your paper. You are not merely to quote these sources as an answer to the question—answer them in your own words.4. You may use other outside sources as well, as long as you properly document them. However, outside sources are not necessary. Each of the questions can be answered from the sources provided in the lessons.5. While the use of the Bible is not restricted, its use is not necessary and is discouraged unless you intend to explain the context of the passage and how that context applies to the issue at hand in accordance with the guidelines provided earlier in the course. You are not to merely quote scripture passages as answers to the questions. Remember this is a philosophical essay not a biblical or theological essay.6. While you may quote from sources, all quotations must be properly cited and quotes from sources will not count towards the 1,500 word count of the paper.

Quotation Activity – Gettysburg Address (from Connect – Power of Process Activity)

It is important to be able to effectively incorporate your sources through direct quotation. For this activity, you will use Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to practice writing an essay while effectively incorporating quotations to help support your discussion. For this activity you will write a persuasive essay and address the following points:•What is a \”proposition\” in the sense that Lincoln uses it?•What does it mean to \”consecrate\” a place?•What is \”hallowed\” ground?•The Gettysburg Address is short, but very famous. Why do you think Lincoln kept it so short?•He was the President, he could have spoken longer, and most speakers that day in fact spoke much longer speeches. He wasn\’t pressed for time. He had time to prepare. A long speech was expected of him.•So, why did Lincoln do what he did? (Hint: Where was he speaking and why? How did his \”rhetorical situation\” influence him?)•Do you see any correlations between Douglass’ work and this work? If so, how do you see this occurring in the text? Be sure to quote from Douglass if you see a correlation.Requirements:•Your written paper should be 2-3 pages in length not counting the required title and reference pages.•You must accurately insert a quote in your analysis to provide in-text evidence from the address, and you must comment on the quote to demonstrate you are thinking in a critical manner.•Your paper must be formatted according to CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.

Portfolio Project Assignment Choice #1: Policy Analysis

The Portfolio Project requires you to write a memorandum to a decision maker, such as the President of the United States, a member of Congress, a chairperson of the SEC, or a state governor, on how to reform corporate ethics in American business today. As we have seen, legislation such as Sarbanes-Oxley has received considerable media attention but has not prevented significant catastrophes such as the global economic meltdown of 2008. You should be prepared to propose policies that might help to ameliorate or to prevent corporate ethics lapses that might occur in the future. You have the freedom to select any policy avenues that you think might help to strengthen and fortify corporate ethics. Your memo should cover the following:•Set forth why your chosen policy pathway is important•Compare and contrast with the policy it replaces•Articulate your ideas on how to remedy the issue of corporate malfeasance•Proffer some recommendations to the decision-maker about how to improve overall corporate governance. Please note that your prescription for change is not nearly as important as your ability to forecast potential challenges to the corporate boardroom and to predict possible ways the government could intervene to assist not only solid corporate governance but also the interests of individual shareholders. It is recommended that you suggest at least two methods and/or policy proposals that critically address the public policy concern. Bring in facts and other data to support the policy issue addressed and make sure each fact is cited to relevant authority. Demonstrate critical thinking by analyzing, evaluating, and interpreting appropriate policy to provide original perspectives to enhance corporate legal and ethical environs. You are expected to convey complex ideas in a clear, concise, and organized fashion, using the required and recommended readings from the course for analytical support. Although you are encouraged to cite from your textbook, you are required to cite a minimum of four scholarly sources (beyond the textbook) to support your statements. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find these sources.Your well-written paper should be 8-10 pages in length, not including the title or references pages. Review the Portfolio grading rubric, which can be accessed from the Course Information page, and make sure to follow the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements. Please be sure to reach out to your instructor at any point in the course if you have any questions about the assignment.
