“This paper should center on the analysis of one short sequence from a film, but now there should be a broader and more general introduction to the chosen film, and the sequence you analyze should be one you select from anywhere in the film.

Choose a film shown in the course up to the time the paper is due other than the film you used for your first paper. Re-see the whole film on video, and think about it. Then write a 5-to-6-page paper (typed, double-spaced, 12-point font) in which you make some general claims about the film and how it works, and back this up by close analysis of a short sequence which you choose out of the film.

When you re-see your film, ask yourself these and suchlike questions:
—Why, in the deepest sense, was this film made?
—What is the subject matter, and what is the film’s attitude to the subject and to life in general?
—What is the film’s visual, dramatic, and emotional world?
—What issues are raised by the film, what problems opened up?
—What does the film want to convey to audiences, or do to audiences? What is its effect on a viewer?
—How is the narrative structured and developed?
—What is the film’s formal style or approach?
—How is the film shot and put together?
—What is the character of the film’s images?
—What is the editing rhythm?
—How do people and actions and environments appear in the particular world of this film?
—What is the acting like?
—How are words used?
—How are sounds and music used?

Select a part of these considerations—some one aspect of the film that is most interesting to you, and that you can discuss well in a short space—and write a page or two in which you make some claims about the film, explaining your thoughts as clearly as possible. Choose a short sequence from anywhere in the film, and fill out your paper with a close description and analysis of this sequence, showing how it backs up or further clarifies, or extends, what you say about the film in your more general remarks. Don’t tell us everything about every shot in your sequence, but notice things relevant to your view of the film. Tie your sequence analysis closely to your more general claims about the film. Every detail you mention should have a comment on its meaning or effect.
