Ethnographic Practice

“Barrios to Burbs”: THE MAKING OF THE MEXICAN AMERICAN MIDDLE CLASS” BY JODY AGIUS VALLEJO.

1. Describe your perception and or stereotypes towards people of Mexican descent. How have your perceptions been colored by your experiences and social media?

2. Find someone from a Mexican background. Be sure to identify the generational background of your informant and their geographic path in the United States. For example, Jose spent his first 5 years of life in east LA then moved to Anaheim and is now currently living in Mission Viejo. Also identify the geographic origin of the first generation; from where in Mexico did they immigrate. This will be a short ethno=history of your informant. Be sure to use a pseudonym for your informant and not her or his real name.

3. Explain to your informant what you are attempting to do and why. One salient point would clearly be that you wish to pass this class. Briefly give an account of Vallejo’s book and provide several points that she raises that you wish to investigate. Consider the following as a place to begin:

– Vallejo devotes a large amount of space to the questions of assimilation and discrimination.
Another question Vellejo focuses on is whether or not second, third  and fourth generations of Mexicans will retain their ethnicity, physical aspects of Mexican culture, cultural identity regarding family and a responsibility to assist newly arrived immigrants as they move into the middle class.

4. Construct a series of questions (be sure to attach the list of questions) and begin your mini ethnography.

5. Compare your results to what Vallejo found. Are your results similar or do they differ? Explain your results.

branding, pricing, distribution

5. discuss whether a push or pull strategy will be used, justify your rationale

How American involvement in Vietnam confirms or denies Bacevich's interpretation of recent history?

“Realism…Implies an obligation to see the world as it actually is, not as we might like it to be. the enemy of realism is hubris, which…finds expression in an outsized confidence in the efficacy of American power as an instrument to reshape global order”, Andrew Bacevich writes in Limits to Power. In what ways does history of the American involvement in Vietnam confirm or deny Bacevich’s interpretation of recent History? Martin Luther King's Letter from Birmingham Jail analysis

Using King’s “Letter From Birmingham Jail” as your model, compose a letter to a target audience that examines a situation that you deem to be unfair and advocates specific action to right the wrong.  Make your case with a specific audience whom you envision to be unsympathetic to your position.  Use King’s rhetorical tactics to win them over.  Whenever possible, use logos, pathos, and/or ethos, as well as sufficient evidence from the sources and from personal experience.
