In this lesson you will venture out and observe the people around you. Tune out what they are saying and then sit back and watch. Take notes on what type of gestures (emblems, regulators, illustrators, adaptors and affect displays) are they using? How often do they use each one? Are they aware of these gestures? The multimedia presentation should be a Prezi PowerPoint, YouTube, Google Slides or similar presentation of the students research that will be turned in for grading and shared with classmates online. The presentation should give an overview of the students research in an engaging way. This part of the project allows students to share key points of the research with peers in a way that is fun and stimulates interest in the material. While students are encouraged to approach this part of the project in a less formal manner, information should still be paraphrased into the students own words and all sources should be properly cited, including graphics, videos, music, etc.

You probably have read about the Zika virus that has been associated with the bite of a certain mosquito. This disease seems to be most prevalent in Brazil, though populations of many tropical areas are at risk. Puerto Rico has had an outbreak, and cases have been reported in Miami Beach and even Palm Beach County.

For the assignment, please research the virus and tell us:

What is the primary, severe condition associated with this disease? What can the disease do to a newborn? How is the virus transmitted? Is there one particular species of the insect being blamed? What are its feeding (biting) habits?

How certain are scientists and medical personnel that the severe medical condition is a direct result of this virus? There have been some reports that the condition may result from chemicals used in spraying for mosquitoes. How credible is that?

Also, what has the World Health Organization said, declared and done about this disease? What advise is being given to women who want to become pregnant in areas where the mosquito is found?

Did you know that Americans eat an average of 20 teaspoons of added sugar every day? This fact was reported by a recent survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. According to the USDA, our typical consumption clearly exceeds current recommendations. Added to that, our total intake is increasing all the time, most likely due to increased consumption of processed foods. It\’s been estimated that we\’re eating 20% more sugar than we did a decade ago.

It is now time to visit your kitchen with a critical eye. For this assignment, you will be looking for an item with a high sugar content.
